Emily Atack shared a touching tribute to her partner Alistair Garner’s late brother Jim on Wednesday.

The Inbetweeners actress, 34, took to Instagram and shared two snaps of Jim, who sadly passed away at the age of 21 in 2004.

Alongside the images, she penned: ‘This is Alistair’s beautiful brother Jim Garner. Today would have been his 42nd birthday.

‘His life was tragically cut short when he was just 21, when he died suddenly from an undiagnosed heart condition.

‘Al has decided to run the London marathon in April to raise money for @cardiomyopathuk.

‘Cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in under 35 year old’s. This is mainly down to lack of awareness and diagnosis.’

Emily continued: ‘Raising awareness on this very little known about condition could save so many lives, so please donate absolutely anything you can to encourage early screenings.

‘The link is in my bio and will be on my story. Thank you SO much everyone. This means everything x.’

Cardiomyopathy is a genetic condition affecting one in 500 people and causes the muscular wall of the heart become thickened, making it harder for the heart to pump blood around the body.

It can be life-threatening and can cause abnormal heart rhythms which can lead to cardiac arrest and sudden death.

Emily has known her boyfriend Alistair for almost three decades because her mother is the sister of Alistair’s stepmother Jane Garner.

They were introduced after Emily’s aunt started dating Alistair’s father Stephen Garner in the early nighties before they got married in 1994.

She welcomed son Barney with Alistair in June.

In November, the Rivals actress revealed she and Alistair discovered the pregnancy news during their first ever holiday together in Italy last year and described it as the ‘most perfect day’ of her life.

Emily rarely comments on her private life but recalled how on their last day in Palmero the lovebirds were discussing future plans for a family, when she realised she had in fact missed her period.

She told The Times: ‘[Alistair] joked, “Let’s buy a pregnancy test then”’ We did and I was pregnant. It was the happiest, most perfect day of my life. Not long afterwards, he packed all his stuff in a van in Manchester where he lived and arrived at my house’.

Emily explained she and Alastair soon bought a property together and the day after they finished unpacking, their son was born.

She went on to explain how the hunky scientist is so proud of her career, something she has never experienced in a relationship, and admitted he eagerly cuts out articles about her from newspapers and magazines to keep.

Gushing over Alistair, Emily also teased wedding plans: ‘I know Al will look after me and Barney. I know he will be the best father and the best husband eventually. I am happier than I ever thought I could be’.

WHAT IS CARDIOMYOPATHY?

Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that affects its size, shape and structure.

The condition is usually inherited.

The three main types of cardiomyopathy are:

  • Hypertrophic – heart wall is thickened
  • Dilated – heart muscle becomes stretched and thin
  • Arrhythmogenic right ventricular – heart muscle cells cannot be kept together

All of these types of cardiomyopathy affect the heart’s ability to pump blood around the body efficiently.

They can also impact the way electrical signals make the organ beat.

There is no cure, however, in most cases people’s quality or length of life is unaffected.

Therapies may include medication, treatment to normalise heart rhythm, pacemakers and, in rare cases, heart surgery or transplants.
