Reality Winner was convicted of releasing classified document about Russia’s involvement in the 2016 Presidential elections to the media.
After initially pleading not guilty, she changed her plea to guilty and accepted a deal from prosecutors.
In exchange, she was given the longest prison sentence ever imposed for the unauthorized release of government information: five years and three months in federal prison.
Zach Galifinakis, 54, and Danny Ramirez, 31, also star in the film, directed by Susanna Fogel, and all three were in attendance at its Saturday premiere and the IndieWire event.
The story starts when Reality is nine as she frees several puppies from a pet store.
She also decides that the best way to prevent another 9/11 is to learn the language of the terrorist, so she begins to study Arabic.
Fogel and screenwriter Kerry Howley said they attempted to paint a relatable picture of Reality in the film by following her love of dogs and her deep commitment to her country and career.
