Elizabeth Banks’ Near-Death Experience: Choking on a Pea on Set

Elizabeth Banks has opened up about the terrifying moment when she found herself unable to breathe while choking on a pea as she sat alone in her film set trailer.

The Hunger Games actress, 50, had been working on her upcoming thriller, Skincare, when she took a break to eat lunch by herself.

However, things took a dramatic turn when she began to choke on a green pea and had no-one around to help her.

Recalling the ‘scary’ experience during Tuesday’s Good Morning America, the actress stated: ‘I had my first-ever choking incident. I was choking on a pea, a little green pea that I was eating for lunch.

‘I was alone in my trailer. I threw the door open. Couldn’t make any noise. I was so afraid. It was terrifying.’

Luckily, a member of staff happened to be walking by and had knowledge of what to do in the moment.

Banks continued: ‘I happened to see someone who said, “Are you choking?” I gave them the sign to say yes. He came over very calmly.

‘I backed right into him. He gave me the Heimlich maneuver. His name is Julius. He is my guardian angel. Julius, I love you.’

The actress added: ‘He saved my life, literally, on the set. After that happened to me, I have used every opportunity like this one to tell people to learn the Heimlich maneuver.’

She urged viewers: ‘Make sure you know how to do it. There’s tons of videos about how to do it. It’s really easy. Lot of people think, “I’m gonna crack a rib or hurt someone.” They’re dying! So crack their rib if you have to.

‘I would have been fine with a cracked rib. I literally couldn’t breathe. It was super scary.’

The star’s upcoming film, Skincare, is loosely inspired by celebrity facialist Dawn DaLuise, who was accused of a murder-for-hire plot against a rival aesthetician.

The film follows a fictional aesthetician named Hope, who is gearing up to launch her own skincare line when a rival facialist, Angel Vergara (Luis Gerardo Méndez), opens a new boutique directly across from her store.

After a series of increasingly disturbing events, Hope begins to suspect that someone is trying to sabotage her. Together with her new friend, Jordan (Lewis Pullman), she embarks on a wild mission to find out who is trying to destroy her life and career.

Elsewhere, Banks is currently busy promoting season six of her ABC game show revival, Press Your Luck.

Meanwhile, the actress has been filming the psychological thriller DreamQuil in Los Angeles with John C. Reilly.

She was previously cast in the upcoming Peacock romantic dramedy The Miniature Wife alongside Matthew Macfadyen.

Additionally, Banks and husband Max Handelman are producing a remake of 1985’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun through their Brownstone Productions banner.

The Pitch Perfect star tied the knot with Handelman, 51, in 2003, and they share two sons.

Banks previously called out Hollywood for marketing her 2019 feature adaptation of Charlie’s Angels as a ‘feminist manifesto’ when she only wanted to make an action movie.

‘I would’ve liked to have made Mission: Impossible, but women aren’t directing Mission: Impossible,’ she told The New York Times in 2022.

‘I was able to direct an action movie, frankly, because it starred women and I’m a female director, and that is the confine right now in Hollywood.’

WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE IS CHOKING

If someone is choking, you need to increase the pressure inside their chest to help expel the obstruction — in effect, stimulating an artificial cough by putting pressure on the diaphragm.

In adults, this is done by giving five sharp blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of the hand, checking after each one to see if the object has dislodged.

If not, give five abdominal thrusts. Stand behind the person and put your arms around their waist. Make a fist with one hand, position it slightly above the belly button and grasp the fist with the other hand, then press hard into the abdomen with a quick, upward thrust. With both actions, the person should be leaning forward.

In babies under one-year-old, give the back blows while holding them over your lap, supporting their head and neck. If this doesn’t work, support the baby in a head-down position and give five chest compressions, checking after each to see if the obstruction has cleared. These can be repeated several times.

If the airway is still blocked, you should call an ambulance.
