Ed Sheeran’s Chicken Wing Diet

Ed Sheeran has revealed that he ate chicken wings for a year and a half’ amid his what he described as his ‘fat phase’ while touring in the United States.

The Shape Of You hitmaker, 33, has been candid about struggling with his weight and his battle with bulimia.

Speaking to Jake Shane on the Session 24 podcast on Thursday, Ed admitted to packing on the pounds while touring the US as he attempted a ‘no carb’ diet on tour.

However, Ed misunderstood what exactly that meant he could eat. ‘I was in my fat phase… in America, I used to think no carbs meant no bread, no fries,’ he said.

‘I was like “I can eat chicken wings’ and I just ate chicken wings for a year and a half. And I put on four stone.

Deciding to lose the weight after the tour, Ed turned to exercise and reducing his portion sizes.

He said: ‘I’m prone to putting on a lot of weight and what I found was just going to the gym regularly and trying to proportion size.

‘I don’t have an off-switch. If I have one thing to eat, the off-switch is there. Then if I have that, then I won’t be like “I need order another and another”.

‘If everything is in front of me then I will eat it.’

Last year, Ed shed light on his eating disorder, his reluctance to become a ‘poster boy from bulimia’ and detailed how he keeps his weight in check.

He was interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning during which he spoke to Seth Doane about how he stays in shape, having previously divulged that he battled bulimia in the past.

He told Seth: ‘I keep my weight in check now because I do a lot of exercise, but I’ve just always been a fat bloke’.

Seth then said: ‘You’re not fat’, leading to Ed’s explanation that he be cautious in order to keep his weight down.

He added: ‘I just don’t want it to turn into, like, the poster boy for [bulimia], you know?

‘I think what is important about speaking about it is letting people know that it is not a problem that is just for one gender.’

He first spoke about his body struggles in Rolling Stones’ March 2023 issue, as he revealed comparing himself to other pop stars led to his body battles.

Speaking to Seth following his protestation about being fat, Ed explained: Well, I know [I’m not fat], because I keep it in check.

‘I did, like, an hour-and-a-half worth of exercise this morning and I’ll be on stage for another two hours today…

‘Like, I watch what I eat and I exercise a lot and I try to not binge as much.’

In the Rolling Stones interview, the embattled singer shared that he began struggling with his body image after collaborating with the likes of Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber, as they both have ‘fantastic figures’.

He admitted to feeling ‘mad uncomfortable’ talking about his struggles, but explained how he began ‘gorging’ on food before vomiting it back up again.
