They told The Sun: ‘They tried to make it work but with Max now about to go on a theatre tour it Murder at Midnight they decided to call time on their relationship. It was fun while it lasted.’

Max will soon be back on screen for a brief EastEnders stint as his character is given a short release from prison to attend a funeral, two years after he was brutally axed.

The actor, who played Ben for four years, is said to have been given a second chance by new boss Ben Wadey, after his contract was not renewed in 2023 following reported warnings from producers about his behaviour.

According to The Sun Max ‘s guest stint could possibly lead to a full time role on the soap once more.

A source told the publication:  ‘Ben had a list of characters he wanted to bring back and Ben Mitchell was one. It’s taken a little while to sort out but Max will be back filming on Albert Square later this year.’

Following his 2023 exit The Sun on Sunday claimed that the decision not to renew Max’s contract was made after bosses had to discipline him.

A source said at the time: ‘Max is ready to move on. He is proud of his time on the show and what he has achieved but he is focused on new projects and what he is doing next.’

It was reported that the actor had decisions with bosses for a chat with executives about his drama offscreen in 2022.

It comes following co-star Jamie Borthwick being sensationally axed from the soap after 19 years after he was suspended for using a disabled slur.

Jamie, who has played Jay Brown for almost two decades, was suspended earlier this year when a video of the incident was publicly shared.

The  actor, 31, was filmed using the term ‘m********s’ during his time on Strictly Come Dancing last year.

Despite rumours Jamie would return to Albert Square, BBC bosses have now made the decision to sack the disgraced actor from the show.

In a statement, a spokesperson for BBC Studios said: ‘We can confirm that Jamie Borthwick will not be returning to EastEnders.

‘We do not comment on individual matters.’

He was reportedly backstage during rehearsals with Wynne Evans who could be heard saying ‘Oh my God’ when he made the remark.

Daily Mail has contacted a representative for Jamie and EastEnders.

Jamie issued an apology at the time, sharing that he did not fully understand the derogatory nature of the term he used but now that he is aware, he is ‘deeply embarrassed’.

He said: ‘I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly.

‘I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning.’

At the height of the controversy, the BBC said: ‘This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC.

‘We have robust processes in place for this.’
