During a royal visit to Copenhagen University, the moment that halted Queen Mary in her tracks

Queen Mary of Denmark was left utterly charmed during a recent royal engagement. 

The Australian-born royal was paying a visit to a Copenhagen university last week when a little girl stepped forward from the waiting crowd to offer her flowers. 

The tot, named Petra Bruun Funch, delicately reached out with her bouquet and caught Mary’s eye. 

The queen knelt down to reach the little girl, graciously taking the bouquet and sharing a sweet chat with the child. 

The outing was one of Mary’s latest since she became the Queen of Denmark.

Mary recently admitted to feeling ‘overwhelmed’ since stepping up to the throne.

The royal couple gave their first interview as King and Queen, describing their feelings about taking over from Queen Margrethe, how they feel they’ve been accepted and what they see for the future.

They sat side-by-side in the interview, with King Frederik emphasising the couple’s united front by using the word ‘we’ instead of ‘I’ countless times.

‘We have embarked on our calling and our work, which symbolically happens with this action on the royal ship. It is very special,’ he said.

In the same interview, Queen Mary, who grew up in Tasmania, admitted to being overwhelmed ‘at times’ in her new role.

‘It is very new and there are many changes and decisions,’ she said. 

She sounded confident, however, and believes that once they have moved past the transition period she will become more settled. 

She also reflected on the moment her husband became King.

‘I stood with the children and when you stepped out onto the balcony towards your fate, it was a moment that moved me incredibly much. We could hear and feel it, even if we couldn’t see it. It was a beautiful moment. I was both very happy and very proud,’ she gushed.

The couple said they would concentrate on the everyday tasks and traditional engagements before adding their own influence as King and Queen.

‘It is very new and there are many changes and decisions,’ she said
