Drew Barrymore’s Relatable Call to Ex Luke Wilson

Drew Barrymore called her ex Luke Wilson on her talk show this week with a result certain to inspire a pang of embarrassed recognition in viewers.

Her daytime series has repeatedly gone viral for her cringe-inducing interactions with her guests, whom she has a habit of hugging.

But this week the 50-year-old actress managed to have an awkward moment with a celebrity who was not even appearing on the program.

Luke and Drew dated from 1996 until 1998, during which time they starred in the movie Home Fries, written by Vince Gilligan, who went on to create Breaking Bad.

She has since described their romance as an unserious ‘open relationship’ and the pair of them remained friends after their split.

However when Vince appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show and they tried to phone Luke in a bout of nostalgia, the call wound up going to voicemail.

Drew and Vince decided to leave Luke a message, in which she cooed at him: ‘We were just talking about you and we’re sending you love, and can you believe Home Fries was 27 years ago now?’

‘I know this is just a voicemail, but I love you, I’m sending you love and I’m here with Vince on the show and we’re thinking about you. Okay, love you, bye.’

Luke did manage to receive the message and call back while the show was still taping, saying he had been doing chores when Drew initially rang him.

He gushed over Vince’s work like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, calling him ‘such a great writer’ and effervescing: ‘It’s unbelievable, what you did.’

Looking back on Home Fries, he also shared that one night he and his co-star Jake Busey had ‘a couple beers’ and shone a flashlight at a train to pretend ‘like we were directing traffic’ – only to realize they had committed a federal offense by doing so.

‘That happens,’ Drew told Luke, looking back on an uncomfortable night in their own relationship. ‘Remember I got arrested for public urination with you?’

In fact they were not arrested, but merely frisked by security and let off with a warning when they were caught relieving themselves in the bushes at a Beck concert.

Drew and Luke first met over dinner at the home of director Tamra Davis, who had cast them in her 1997 crime comedy Best Men.

‘We were supposed to play a married couple so she wanted us to know each other beforehand,’ Drew explained when Luke came on her talk show earlier this year.

‘And then when we walked out from the dinner, I watched Luke crawl in his window of his Isuzu Trooper and get in through the window, and I was like: “Okay, that’s an interesting approach to getting in your car,” and he’s like: “The door’s broken.”‘

During the throes of their relationship, she gushed: ‘From the moment I saw him, I realized he was the most incredible I’d ever been so fortunate to meet,’ via People.

Years later, she reflected on her talk show that she was ‘dating him but I think he was also dating other people. It was an open relationship. We were young.’

She took a lighthearted view of her youthful dalliance, saying she and Luke were ‘just young, we’re having fun, we’re all playing, acting, hanging out,’ and adding: ‘You’re not taking it all so seriously, and it was fun and we had the best time.’
