Drew Barrymore opened up about undergoing plastic surgery aged just 17 in a candid interview this week.
The Scream actress, 50, who shot to fame as a child star in ET, had a breast reduction in 1992 after feeling ‘heavy and uncomfortable’ with the size of her chest.
During a discussion on breast cancer, mammograms and women’s health on Wednesday’s The Drew Barrymore Show, the host made rare comments about her surgery.
‘What if someoneโs had a reduction, like me?’ she asked. ‘What if someone has had implants or enhancements like a lot of people out there? How does any alteration of our bodies also play into the examination process?’
Guestย OBGYN Dr. Kameelah Phillips replied that ‘imaging is really important’ and that doctors urge patients to ‘get an ultrasound’ if they get ‘unsatisfactory mammograms.’

She said: ‘I really love my body and the way it is right now. Thereโs something very awkward about women and their breasts because men look at them so much.
‘When theyโre huge, you become very self-conscious. Your back hurts. You find that whatever you wear, you look heavy in. Itโs uncomfortable.’
Breast reduction surgery is done to reduce the size and weight of a woman’s breasts, and involves removing fat, tissue and skin from the chest.
Genes, hormones and body shape and size may determine how large a woman’s breasts are โ usually they are in proportion to the rest of the body but some women’s may be exceptionally large.
The star – who had her first stint in rehab when she was just 13 years old – told People in 2023 that she had a fear of getting further surgery as she has a ‘highly addictive personality.’ย
She said: ”I haven’t done anything, and I’m going to maintain that as long as possible.ย I have zero judgment for anyone doing anything. But I don’t see myself resorting to it…
‘I worry Iโd continue to chase it, get this and that done. That scares me, just because of my own approach to things. So, Iโm waiting on making any alterations.
The Whip It actress – who two daughters with ex-husband Will Kopelman – joked she is looking forward to seeing how she looks when she gets older naturally.

She said: ‘And, I look forward to seeing what I look like as a leather bag in the future!’
And Drew insisted there is no need to worry about getting older, but people should focus their concerns on their health instead.
She said: ‘It means you’re alive, you’re living, and that’s a really good thing. Embracing aging is such positive, healthy messaging.
‘Health really comes into focus more than anything when there is peril.
‘If you have your health, then you can focus on so many other things โ including beauty. But it really is the most important thing of all.’
In 2022, she also said she does not get injectables like Botox.
Drew previously vowed to show her daughters that ageing is a ‘luxury’.
She said at the time: ‘I’m now determined more than ever to show my daughters that ageing is a luxury. If we’re lucky, we are all going to age.
‘I just want them to be at peace with who they are and not what they look like. If they are good, cool people, that’s all I care about.’
