Ellen Pompeo made her return as Dr. Meredith Grey in new series promo for season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy, after exiting the show as a series regular last year.
The actress, 54, was briefly featured at the beginning of a teaser trailer for the hit medical drama, released by ABC on Friday.
‘How long do I have to wait?’ Meredith asks, before the scene shifts to Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) as she orders her medical interns to start working.
The new season marks the first time Ellen will be appearing on the long-running drama in a guest role and not as a series regular.
Following her exit she remains an executive producer and will provide the opening and closing voiceover for each episode.

Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy will premiere on March 14 on ABC.
Last year Ellen revealed the reason behind her decision to quit Grey’s Anatomy and her future plans on an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
The actress said playing the same role for 19 years was turning her brain into ‘scrambled eggs.’
In November of 2022 the star announced that she would be retiring from ABC’s long-running show after 19 seasons.

‘I feel super happy, but listen, the show has been incredible to me and I’ve loved a lot of the experience,’ she said.
‘It’s just I gotta mix it up a little bit.’
She added: ‘I’m fifty-three, my brain is like scrambled eggs. I gotta do something new or I’m literally gonna turn into like, you can’t do the New York Times crossword puzzle every single day.’
‘I mean 19 years, that’s more than people keep their kids in their house, like people keep their kids in their house until they’re 18 and then they send them off to college, so this is like me going away to college.’
When Drew asked about what she wanted to do next, Pompeo responded: ‘I have a lot that I’m doing.’
She continued, ‘I have three kids and so I take care of them, and it’s really important for me to be around for them and be more present for them.’
The star also spoke about taking on a new role after retiring Grey’s Anatomy as a series regular.
‘I’m gonna do a limited series for Hulu in the spring which is a very cool kind of crazy true story,’ she said.

According to Variety, Pompeo is set to star in an untitled orphan miniseries inspired by real life events.
In the eight-episode limited series ordered by Hulu, a Midwestern couple adopts what they believe is an eight-year-old girl with a rare form of dwarfism.
According to the synopsis, as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, they slowly begin thinking she may not be who she says she is.
The plot reads that as the parents question her story, they’re confronted with hard questions of their own about the lengths they’re willing to go to defend themselves, falling into a battle that’s fought in the tabloids, the courtroom, and ultimately their marriage.
