Disney+ has axed a fan-favourite blockbuster TV series after just one season, despite it garnering a slew of rave reviews.
Fans of Renegade Nell have said they will be ‘mourning’ the loss of the show for the ‘next six months,’ after the streaming service controversially announced it was pulling the plug on Tuesday.
A Disney+ spokesperson told Deadline: ‘Disney+ original series, Renegade Nell, will not be returning for a second season on the service. We’re incredibly proud of the world created by Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor…
‘We’d like to thank them, our production partners at Lookout Point, the entire cast – led by Louisa Harland – and crew for their incredible work on this series, all of whom we hope to work with again in the future.’
The popular show is a series set in the 18th Century about a young woman who finds herself framed for murder and subsequently goes on the run to become a highwayman and the most notorious outlaw in England.

Its stellar cast of Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland, Alice Kremelberg, and Frank Dillane was led by Ben Taylor, who directed Netflix’s smash hit Sex Education, and was written by Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright.
Daily Mail TV critic Christopher Stevens gave the eight-part series an incredible five-star rating, writing that Wainwright ‘created an extraordinary English heroine, woven from tales of highwaymen, fairy stories, Gothic novels and a dash of Shakespeare’.
On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an 87% score on the ‘Tomatometer’ and an 88% Audience Score, earning a 7.80 out of 10 rating on average.
Harland plays Nellie, an innkeeper’s daughter who returns home after her husband is killed fighting the French at the Battle of Blenheim.
On the way, she is relieved of her horse, wedding ring and boots by a band of highwaymen.
But when the gang’s leader (Frank Dillane) whacks her across the face with his pistol, the series really kicks off and something supernatural happens.
Despite only hitting the streaming platform on March 29, Renegade Nell has already earned a loyal fanbase.
