Dev Patel has revealed how he broke his hand on the first day of filming his latest movie Monkey Man as he opened up about his career on Wednesday.
The British actor, 34, explained how he ‘broke his hand, multiple toes and tore ligaments’ and was forced to continue filming the action film during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Dev explained how he had to get a private jet to Indonesia to visit a doctor and get a screw in his hand so he wouldn’t be ‘red flagged’ by the film insurance company for breaking Covid-19 rules.
He also joked that his hit 00’s comedy series Skins is ‘like a rash that won’t go away’ and revealed he still ‘stays in touch’ with some of his old co-stars.
Speaking about Monkey Man, he said: ‘I wasn’t quite Jackie Chan, but broken hands, some broken toes, and torn ligaments. Our first big fight scene was in this bathroom sequence. My hand broke on the first or second day of that shoot.

‘I found a doctor online that was putting screws into bones in Jakarta. We managed to get a [medical] jet so that the insurance company wouldn’t red flag it as breaking our [COVID] bubble. I came back to work the next day and we carried on. It was a way to avoid having this cast put on my hand because we wouldn’t be able to afford painting it out.’
Dev directed and portrayed character Kid in the thriller which debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with an 100% critics score.
The Slumdog Millionaire star made his TV debut in hit 2007 series Skins and went on to say that filming ‘was amazing’ and it kick-started his career.
Dev portrayed Anwar Kharral in the series which followed a group of teens in sixth former focusing on a variety of storylines including substance abuse, sexuality, teenage pregnancy, eating disorders and mental illness.
He said: ‘Well, Keziah…! Skins was like—oh boy, it’s kind of like the little rash that won’t go away. No, no, no. Look, man, it was amazing. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing when I was plucked off of the street to be in that thing.
‘We all stay in touch. And without it, there would be no me in Slumdog, without Danny Boyle’s daughter being a fan of Skins. All of these things, even up until Monkey Man, they’re lily pads.’
Previously Dev detailed how his success is actually all down to his mother, Anita.
Appearing on The Project he revealed his mum encouraged him to pursue acting after she found a casting call in the local paper.

‘There is a paper in the UK called Metro, she tore out this ad and I thought she had lost her mind,’ he said.
The award-winning actor said he was studying at the time, but now looking back at it he is thankful that his mother pushed him to follow his dreams.
‘I was doing exams, I was 16, but thank God she did, because you know, it has changed my life’.
Dev cut a dapper figure in a brown suit as he posed for Vanity Fair 31st annual Hollywood Issue.
The actor joined 12 Hollywood A-listers including Glen Powell, Zendaya, Nicole Kidman, Zoe Saldaña, Sydney Sweeney, Josh O’Connor, Danielle Deadwyler, Jonathan Bailey, LISA, Ncuti Gatwa, and Bill Skarsgård.
