He died April 22, 2023 at age 78 due to prostate cancer.
Derek became a judge in season 29, and prior to that he was a dancer on the show from season 5 through 11, and season 13-21 and season 23.

Julianne became a co-host last year, after Tyra Banks stepped away from her hosting duties following three years in the position.
Prior to serving as co-host, Julianne was a judge from 2014 until 2021, and as a pro dancer from 2007 until 2009.
Alfonso became a co-host in 2022 alongside Tyra.
Last year, Alfonso spoke to Entertainment Tonight about Julianne joining as a co-host: ‘Our chemistry I think is going to be fantastic.’
Adding: ‘We’ve known each other so long. She was a judge on my season. We’ve known each other through the years and our energy just fees so right,’
