Hayley, 29, had to get a cranioplasty – which is a procedure to repair the skull due to imperfections or a hole.
The skull implant was needed to restore the shape of the skull as well as protect the brain – replacing the piece of skull that was removed to do the craniectomy.
On December 7, Hayley was diagnosed with cranial hematoma – which is when blood collects in the skull – due to a burst blood vessel – which required emergency surgery (emergency craniectomy).
Derek continued in the caption for his Thursday post: ‘My sincere appreciate goes to the exceptional medical team. Their expertise and steady hands were pivotal in this journey, ensuring a smooth and successful surgery.
‘Especially Dr. Mai who not only performed the surgery but was also the one who saved her life 2 weeks ago.’
Derek added that he and Hayley were touched by the ‘outpouring of support and prayers,’ noting that the ‘thoughts, prayers and positive energy’ have been a ‘source of strength and comfort’ to them at this challenging time.
‘This surgery marks a significant milestone in my wife’s recovery journey, and your support has played a crucial role in getting us here. We are filled with hope and optimism for the future, knowing she is on the path to a full recovery, surrounded by such a loving community,’ he said.
He closed out his statement thanking well wishers.

They are in DC because her symptoms from her cranial hematoma started during the tour stop there – which was December 7.
She was hospitalized and then underwent emergency surgery there as well.
In the video, Hayley wrote a protective headgear on her head to protect her skull and brain until the surgery.
‘As you all know, the past week has been a challenging journey for us due to a life-threatening event that suddenly came into our lives. It was a time filled with uncertainty and fear, going from living our dreams onstage, to a nightmare in an instant.
‘But today, we are filled with hope and relief as we share with you an update.
Derek noted that her illness has been ‘a profound reminder of how quickly things can change. But, it has also shown us the incredible strength and resilience that lies within us and the power of having a supportive community around us.’
