Halle Berry’s ex-husband David Justice got candid about his failed marriage to the Oscar winner – and revealed what could have salvaged the relationship.
The 58-year-old Monster’s Ball actress previously tied the knot with the former MLB player in 1993, but the pair divorced just four years later.
David opened up about the topic on Thursday’s episode of the All The Smoke podcast and said while they initially were in a ‘honeymoon state’ after saying ‘I do,’ he began to question if she was ‘the woman I want to have kids with.’
The sports star explained that he only had ‘one relationship before’ marrying Halle. ‘My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast.’
David, 59, explained that he had been ‘looking at my mom and I’m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know?
‘Then I’m thinking, “Okay, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?”‘
Daily Mail has reached out to Halle’s reps for comment.

David added, ‘At that time, as a young guy – she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues.’
He recalled the Hollywood actress asking him to marry her after only five months of dating.
The baseball pro revealed that he had accepted the proposal ‘because I couldn’t say no’ and admitted he wasn’t sure ‘if my heart was really into it.’
‘But I didn’t want to make her feel bad and say no, you know, or [if] I was just in the moment.’
Months into their marriage, the former couple’s differences came to light and their careers resulted in them spending a lot time away from each other.
‘We spent a lot of time apart because she was doing movies in this country, that country,’ David said, before sharing what he felt could have possibly kept their marriage together.
‘And we honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it.’
Halle and David began dating in 1992 after she first saw him competing during an MTV celebrity baseball game. She later gave the sports player her phone number through a reporter that they both knew.

The former couple tied the knot on New Year’s Day in 1993 amid their whirlwind romance, but separated in 1996. The following year, their divorce was finalized.
Halle later admitted to Parade in 2007 that she had suffered from depression following the split which led her to a suicide attempt.
‘My sense of worth was so low,’ the actress told the outlet, per Today. ‘I had to reprogram myself to see the good in me.
‘Because someone didn’t love me didn’t mean I was unlovable. I promised myself I would never be a coward again.’
The Catwoman star later married Eric Benet in 2001 but the former couple divorced in 2005. She also tied the knot with Olivier Martinez in 2013 but their divorce was finalized in 2016.
Halle is mom to daughter Nahla, 17, whom she welcomed with ex Gabriel Aubry and also shares son Maceo-Robert, 11, with Olivier.
David has also since moved on following his separation from Halle and married Rebecca Villalobos in 2001. The couple share three children together.
Earlier this year in February, Halle hit back at comments saying that she ‘can’t keep a man.’

While appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show, the topic of dating was brought up and the actress said, ‘I mean, it’s hard out here. It’s hard in these streets.’
Halle continued, ‘I’ve heard people say, “Something must be wrong with Halle Berry, she can’t keep a man.” Who’s to say I want to keep a man?
‘I don’t want to keep the wrong man. Like, I’m not crazy, right? So when you find that you make a mistake – we all make mistakes.’
She added, ‘We have a right to say, “Oh God, this was a mistake. Let me start again.” We have the right to do that.’
The Never Let Go actress has since been romantically linked to Van Hunt – whom she was confirmed to be dating in 2020.

A few months earlier in June, Van revealed that he has already popped the big question to the Hollywood star during an interview with Today.
‘I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see. It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her,’ he said.
But Halle – who had also joined in on the interview – expressed, ‘I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married.
‘And I feel like I should, we should get married, but it’s not because we feel like we have to. I think it’s something that we would like to do, just because we want that expression.’
