Hairy Biker Dave Myers’ final motorbike sells for huge five-figure sum after his death from cancer

Dave Myers was famous for riding his motorbike alongside his best friend Si King on their popular cooking show, Hairy Bikers.

Now, the final motorbike Dave rode on the BBC programme has been sold for a huge five-figure sum, with the proceeds going to two charities.

Myers died at the age of 66 in February last year after a two-year battle with cancer, leaving his fans and loved ones devastated.

His widow Lilian Myers told how she wanted his final motorbike – which featured in the BBC’s Hairy Bikers Go West – to go to a good home.

The BSA Goldstar went under the hammer at the National Motorcycle Museum near Solihull and sold for a massive £15,800, with the proceedings going to two charities.

Of the sale, Lilian told the BBC: ‘That bike still has his DNA on it… I really really hope that the person who gets it, loves it.’

‘I am really, really happy to see this bike being loved, and I’m sure the person who got it will love it as much as Dave did,’ she added.

The motorbike was sold to Si Harrison, who was friends with Dave, and the funds will be donated to NSPCC Childline and CancerCare North Lancashire & South Cumbria.

Harrison said buying the vehicle meant ‘so much’ to him and shared his plans to ride it on Dave Day, which sees the biking community gather to remember Myers.

‘I couldn’t think of a bike that I’d rather be on, and the idea of riding in Dave Day meant so much to me,’ he said.

The first Dave Day took place in June and saw thousands of motorcyclists travel from London to Myers’ hometown in Barrow-in-Furness to honour the celebrity chef.

The momentous ride, in which 20,000 bikers participated in, also raised a staggering £127,000 for charity.

Myers’ co-star King addressed the crowds following the first ever Dave Day bike ride and told how the reception was ‘remarkable’.

In a video shared by BBC North East and Cumbria at the time, he gushed: ‘It was just absolutely remarkable. What a remarkable reception. Just mind-blowing.

‘All of the over bridges all the way from London up to Barrow-in-Furness, people waving and showing kindness and courtesy – unbelievable.’

Myers’ widow Lilian later appeared on stage in Barrow-in-Furness to thank those who had come out to pay tribute to Myers.

‘The love that you’ve put into this is not going unnoticed, thank you very much,’ she said.

‘I want to thank all the people that have made the effort to come today, some of them from Malaysia, some of them really struggled in different ways to make their way here but they did, they are with us tonight.’

Following Myers’ death, his hometown in Cumbria organised the tribute day, which also included a music concert and a service of remembrance.

The day raised funds for the Institute of Cancer Research and children’s charity, the NSPCC.

It comes after fans were left sobbing after the show’s final episode which honoured Dave back in December.

Viewers were ‘in bits’ as they learned more about Dave, including how he learned to cook at the age of just eight while caring after his unwell mother.

The episode also followed Dave Day which saw Si and Dave’s widow Liliana lead thousands of bikers in an epic fundraiser as they rode from London to Barrow-in-Furness honour of the late TV star.

Taking to X fans branded the special ‘superb’ and an ‘incredible tribute’ with not a dry eye between them.

They wrote: ‘Is anyone watching this Hairy Bikers tribute to Dave on BBC2? I’m in bits’: ‘I’ve cried about ten times at the Hairy Bikers already’: OMG please tell me why I am actually nearly crying at Hairy Bikers remembering Dave special’: ‘That was a very emotional programme in memory of Dave Myers 50% of The Hairy Bikers. I swear if there is a god he takes the best first’.

‘The Hairy Bikers tribute to Dave was superb’: ‘My other half cannot believe this Hairy Bikers special JUST started and I’ve already got tears in my eyes’: ‘Bloody jell, this Hairy Bikers programme ain’t half got my bottom lip going’.

Si opened up about his grief and his plans for the future during a special screening of show earlier this month.

Reflecting Dave’s death he said: ‘Grief comes and comes and goes and goes.’

‘It’s important that I honour the Bikers’ legacy, and it’s important that I do stuff that I want to do still because Dave was very clear and adamant [that I did]. As I would want for him if the shoe was on the other foot.’

Si confirmed that the Hairy Bikers series would be retired, and future projects will be ‘very different’ without his long-time collaborator.

‘It would be different. That was Dave and I. He’s no longer with us. I would want it to be different. That’s very important.’

Si, who broke down in tears in the final episode, spoke poignantly about the courage Myers displayed during their final series together.

‘I was driving on the A1 north, and he rang me. He went, ‘King, it’s me. I’ve got something to tell you. Do you want to pull over?’ So I pulled over, and he told me that he had cancer.

‘I could only admire the courage of the man as we rode side by side once again. The last series that we did together, not just myself and Dave but all of our crew that we’d worked with for 10, 15, 20 years in some cases, was a testament to his determination.

‘He was absolutely adamant that he wanted to get back on the road, back on the bike, and feel like he wasn’t just a cancer patient anymore. He wanted to feel like one of the Hairy Bikers again, and I think that kept him going.’

Si said he feels a responsibility to preserve Dave’s memory and their shared legacy.

‘It’s my duty to look after his memory, to look after the legacy that he built, to look after the legacy of the Hairy Bikers. Dave was a joyous man. He embraced and loved the life that he led, and that was enormously important to him. That was the essence of my best mate.’

He then went on describe Dave as a ‘perfect example’ of brotherhood and community.

‘The programme was an exclamation mark. It was brotherhood, community, and an opportunity for people to openly grieve the loss of a decent, straightforward man.’

Reflecting on their connection, Si said: ‘There was a bond of brotherhood and kindness because we both had grown up in different ways.

‘As working-class lads, you just hustle, and you just hope. I think it was the essence of hope that brought us together. We recognised that in each other.’

He also shared a humorous memory of Dave’s initial encounter with his wife, Lil.

‘It was definitely love at first sight for Dave. I’m not sure it was for Lil. She was probably thinking, ‘Who the bloody hell are these two?’ But I could see it in his eyes. He said, ‘I really, really like her.’ I went, ‘Oh, no kidding. Do you? Shall we have a drink and talk about it?’

The 2025 TV Choice Awards was an emotional affair as stars gathered at The Hilton on Park Lane on Monday evening.

Jason Manford hosted the swanky ceremony, which saw The Hairy Bikers win Best Food Show for The Hairy Bikers Go West, their final series before the tragic death of Dave Myers.

Dave passed away aged 66 in February 2024, with this co-star Si King by his side following a lengthy battle with an unspecified cancer.

Si was on hand to graciously accept the award, which had been been voted for by the public, presented by The Madame Blanc Mysteries’ Sally Lindsay and Steve Edge.

Another poignant moment saw Brenda Blethyn, 78, presented with an Outstanding Contribution Award, in recognition of ITV detective series Vera, in which she played DCI Vera Stanhope before quitting last year after 14 series.

Chosen to present the gong was Brenda’s Secrets and Lies co-star and fellow BAFTA winner Timothy Spall, 67.

Meanwhile Nicola Coughlan nabbed Best Comedy Performance for her role in Channel 4’s Big Mouth, beating Brassic’s Michelle Keegan.

One of the night’s biggest winners was the critical acclaimed ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which scooped Best New Drama and Best Drama Performance for actor Toby Jones who played the titled character.

The four-part series told the story of a long-running campaign to expose the Horizon IT system scandal, in which hundreds of Post Office staff were wrongfully accused of theft and fraud.

Ant & Dec secured their whopping 19th trophy as I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! was once again named Best Reality Show, while rival Strictly took home Best Talent Show.

Emmerdale also enjoyed a successful evening winning the top honour of Best Soap and Best Soap Newcomer for Beth Cordingly for her role as Ruby Fox-Miligan.

The TV Choice Awards has become the latest ceremony to ditch gendered categories in favour of ‘Best Performer’ gongs.

It has been the debate among the award ceremonies in recent years as to how categories ensure they are inclusive of non-binary performers, with the BRITs the first to go gender-neutral while the BAFTAs decided against it.

But gone now gone are the TV Choice Awards’ Best Soap Actor and Best Soap Actress gongs, replaced by a Best Soap Performer award which is open to anyone who played a role in a recurring show.

Similarly, the Drama category has been streamlined into one award while the newly-added Comedy category has received the same treatment.

The Best Soap Newcomer award completes the list of new honours available to actors and actresses at this year’s show.

Another awards ceremony to no longer have gendered categories is The BRIT Awards after it adopted a gender-neutral approach in 2022.

Among the new categories was Best Male Solo Artist (a move widely thought at the time to have been driven by non-binary singer Sam Smith).

Adele, who won Best British Artist in 2022, said on stage: ‘I understand why the name of this award has changed but I really love being a woman and being a female artist.’

In 2023 there was outrage after the Best British Artist shortlist was all-male.

But a year later a subsequent tweak was made to the category – which doubled in size and saw more of a balanced mix, with six of its ten nominees established female artists.

At its 2024 nomination announcement, the British Phonograph Industry – who organise the annual event – admitted gender balance has been readdressed following 2023’s all-male nominees.

BPI Chair Yolanda Brown, said: ‘We shared our upset that no women or R&B artists were represented last year.

‘We consulted with our advisory group, we thought long and hard about moving forward.’

But BAFTA dealt a blow to nonbinary performers, deciding – after spending two years debating the thorny question of ‘gendered’ acting categories – that awards nominees will have to pick a side and choose whether they want to compete as ‘actors’ or ‘actresses’.

The announcement places non-binary performers – like Emma Corrin, Emma D’Arcy and Bella Ramsey – in a tricky position.

Revised guidelines released last year say that film producers must ‘confirm the gender/gender identity of each candidate for nomination’.

A source adds: ‘It is up to the entrant which category they enter into.’

She was probably thinking, “Who the bloody hell are these two?” But I could see it in his eyes. He said, “I really, really like her.” I went, “Oh, no kidding. Do you? Shall we have a drink and talk about it?”’

‘It’s emotional!’ Si King breaks down in tears in final episode of Hairy Bikers as he vows to go it alone after heartbreaking loss of best friend and co-star Dave Myers, 66, this year

Hairy Biker Si King has confirmed he will continue creating new programmes solo following the heartbreaking loss of his best friend and co-star Dave Myers to cancer earlier this year.

Si, 58, opened up about his grief and his plans for the future during a special screening of The Hairy Bikers: You’ll Never Ride Alone, which airs on BBC One on Monday December 23.

Reflecting on Myers’ death in February, Si said: ‘Grief comes and comes and goes and goes.’

He went, “King, it’s me. I’ve got something to tell you. Do you want to pull over?” So I pulled over, and he told me that he had cancer.

Si said he feels a responsibility to preserve Myers’ memory and their shared legacy.

The upcoming programme, Si explained, is both a tribute to Myers and a way to give fans closure. ‘It’s quite emotional. You never want to make a programme like that, do you? But it was important to celebrate the man and what he’s achieved. And it was important to give our audience a goodbye as well.’

February will mark a full year since Hairy Biker Dave Myers lost his battle with cancer, but best friend and long-time colleague Si King is still expecting him to walk through the door.

Myers, whose TV cooking shows and travelogues with King made him a household name, passed away on February 28 aged 66, two-years after confirming his cancer diagnosis.

And his surviving co-star, 58, whose friendship with Myers dates back to 1992, admits he often fools himself into believing he is still alive.

Appearing on Wednesday’s instalment of This Morning, he said: ‘The grieving process started quite a long time ago for me when Dave was diagnosed – it was a big diagnosis – and it kind of started then really because it was all about the fight and that’s what we concentrated on.

‘Grief is a very individual journey because it’s about an emotional adjustment of loss and the things that are no longer tangible, and that’s the bit that’s odd to get your head around.

‘The amount of times I’ve thought, “I’ve not heard from that toerag for ages…” and then I go “Oh man…” so it’s raw for anybody that loses somebody, but there are two things that are certain in life – you begin it, and you end it.

‘The bit in the middle is about what you do with it. Dave loved his life, he lived it to the full and he was joyous to be around.’

During a separate appearance on The One Show, the TV presenter explained how the spirit of their friendship will live on as he learns to cope with his loss.

The pair had begun work on their latest book, The Hairy Bikers: Our Family Favourites, before his death, with Si completing it in his honour.

Dave passed away aged 66 in February, with this co-star by his side following a lengthy battle with an unspecified cancer.

Speaking on the programme he said: ‘It’s the book that Dave and I started before he passed.

‘I really wanted to finish it in his honour. It’s all those recipes that have stuck with us throughout the years.

‘Just because Dave’s passed it doesn’t stop you being a friend. The spirit of our relationship will always be there.

Hairy Bikers: Si King’s Final Wish

Si King has revealed what his late friend Dave Myers ‘would have wanted’ for Simon following his death from cancer.

Dave, best know as the other half of the Hairy Bikers, passed away aged 66 in February, with Si by his side following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Si, 57, and Dave worked very closely together for two decades, creating a number of much-loved cooking TV shows as well as books and live appearances.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Si admitted he has been having a difficult time since the loss of his friend.

At times, he has felt like getting on his bike and heading ‘into the sunset’ but knows that’s not what Dave would have wanted.

He said: ‘The answer is I am going to take some time to reflect on the life I had with my best mate, and think about moving forwards. Which is exactly what Dave would have wanted. Move forward, don’t dwell on the past..’

Si also recalled the difficulties of filming the final series of the Hairy Bikers for both himself and the crew.

He said: ‘[Dave] wanted to travel up and down the west coast of the UK — an area he loved and where he’d been born. Oh God, that last series was by the far the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do in my entire life.

‘He crew felt it too; some of whom had been with us since the start. All of us trying to carry on as normal, trying not to lose it.’

The pair met in 1992 and Si said their relationship ‘was sealed over a tandoori chicken masala, four poppadoms and three pints of lager’.

Their first TV appearance together was The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook in 2004, which was part cooking show and part travel programme and in the first episode the duo rode the length of Portugal.

In June, Si announced that the Hairy Bikers brand is over following the tragic passing of Dave.

He said it wouldn’t be ‘respectful’ for him to continue as the Hairy Bikers on his own.

Speaking to The Guardian about his next career move, Si said: ‘It can’t be the Hairy Bikers 2.0. That’s not going to happen. It wouldn’t be respectful.’

The TV chef continued: ‘It’s definitely a time of change and change comes at a cost and that cost has been my best friend.

‘What was wonderful about my mate Dave was that he absolutely embraced the moment. He used to drive me mad. I’d tell him to say something negative for a bit, but he just loved being a Hairy Biker.

Jason ‘Woody’ Woodcock, the organiser of the Dave Day ride from London to Barrow, said there could have been up to 30,000 riders involved in the last leg.

He said: ‘Everybody said it couldn’t be done. We would never be able to move all those people and keep to time. Yet we did it and not a minute late.

‘I am emotionally drained but really happy. I promised to put a few bikes together for Dave and thanks to the bike community and the people of Barrow we have done it.

He told The Times: ‘I’ll be honest with you, the past few months have been a struggle. More than once I was on the verge of jumping on my bike and heading into the sunset. Not tell anyone where I was going. Just clear off and never come back.

‘Other times I was raging. Raging at that bloody disease, at God and anything else I could think of.’

He died with his family and friends by his side, his colleague and lifelong friend Si revealed.

After meeting in 1995 on the set of a TV drama, the best friends built up a reputation as the friendly faces of TV cooking, with 31 separate projects since they first debuted on the BBC in 2006.

Dave appeared on Strictly in 2013 and was paired with longtime professional Karen Hauer.

Speaking in June, Karen admitted Dave’s zest for life had an impact that lasted long after their week seven exit during the eleventh series of the long-running staple.

Asked about her favourite celebrity dance partners on Tuesday’s edition of Good Morning Britain, she said: ‘I love them all but one that is very close to my heart is Dave Myers, who I absolutely adored.

‘He was just everything, he was a bundle of joy. Because of him I started to enjoy Strictly and made sure I was being myself at all times and not taking myself too seriously.’

Just days before Dave’s death, former Strictly Come Dancing professional Robin was found dead in a hotel room in London at the age of 44 on February 19.

The performer was a professional dancer on the BBC show from 2010 to 2013 and his death prompted an outpouring of grief across the dancing world.

Robin is said to have suffered a troubling incident over the New Year period, before embarking to perform on a luxurious cruise in South Africa.

Seven days earlier, the dancer had reposted a quote which said: ‘Trauma teaches you to expect and accept the bare minimum.

‘In this new season, may you adjust your standards and learn to receive the maximum. You are worthy. You are enough. You deserve overflow.’

And on January 4, he had shared a message with his friends and followers which said: ‘Big shout out and love to everyone who’s reached out and checked in the last week.

  • My Hairy Biker’s Love Story

    My Hairy Biker’s Love Story

At some point towards the end, Liliana – wife of the Hairy Biker Dave Myers – noticed her husband’s wedding ring was missing.

‘His fingers had become very thin, and since we were only going between the hospital and home, I thought it had slipped off somewhere between the two places and he had lost it. I was very upset not to have it,’ she says.

She stopped thinking about the ring. In the weeks and months after Dave died in February this year, there were other things that took priority. Grieving, mostly.

But just the day before we meet, Liliana was going through one of the drawers where her ever-dapper husband, the much-loved TV chef, kept his collection of handkerchiefs. And there, nestled among the silk, she found his wedding band. She becomes emotional just talking about it.

‘All his handkerchiefs were ironed and neatly folded, and there was his ring. He must have put it there, carefully, so as not to lose it.’

    My Hairy Biker’s Love Story

Liliana and Dave Myers married in 2011 in front of 400 friends and family

She has it on today, on the third finger of her right hand, mirroring her wedding ring on her left hand. Having spent a few hours in her company, and hearing the story of their life together, I don’t imagine it will ever come off.

It is nearly six months since Dave Myers died, aged 66, after a two-year battle with cancer.

This is Liliana’s first interview since, and she tells me one of the most distressing moments came when Dave lost his sense of taste.

Not when he lost his hair, or when the ability to walk deserted him. Not when he found that he could not feel anything through his fingertips. But when the taste went, came her – and his – distress.

‘Oh my God. This was a man who was famous for his appetite,’ she points out. ‘For him to lose that appetite and his sense of taste was so upsetting.

‘This was a man who was at his happiest around our table – in every house we lived in we had a huge table that seated around ten or 12. He lit up a room anyway – the man burned with creativity, with interest in everyone – but his passion for life came through particularly when he was cooking for someone, for everyone.

My husband served up love on a plate.’ She manages a joke about how she particularly misses him in the kitchen, when she is opening cupboard doors and wondering what to have for dinner.

‘Do you know we were together for 17 years, and in that time we never had the same meal twice. In the cupboard, I still have hundreds of jars of ingredients I don’t know how to use.’

So how is she today? She thinks about the question. ‘I don’t consider myself a widow, if that is what you are asking,’ she says. ‘I don’t like the word. I’m Dave’s wife. He’s still everywhere in our house. I talk to him all the time.’

Dave, of course, was one half of one of the most famous TV double-acts of our age. As the Hairy Bikers, he and best mate Simon King served up joy on our screens for more than 20 years, offering not just cookery tips and blokey banter, but a genuinely touching example of male friendship.

We all wept for Si when Dave died. It was Si who announced that he had gone, saying: ‘My best friend is on a journey that, for now, I can’t follow. I wish you God’s speed, brother. See you on the other side. Love ya.’

Dave fell in love with Liliana in 2005 in her native Romania

But Dave’s other ‘other half’ was Liliana, the woman he fell in love with in 2005 in her native Romania and whom he married in 2011.

Both Liliana and Si were at Dave’s beside, as he passed away, as were Liliana’s children Iza and Sergiu from her first marriage –whom Dave considered his own.

‘And he was the best thing that ever happened to my children. They considered him their dad, and he could not have done more for them. He was the best father.’

This could be an impossibly tragic interview. All the ingredients are there. Liliana reveals that they moved halfway through Dave’s chemo simply to improve his quality of life.

Their new place had an atrium in the middle of the house. ‘There were many times where we would lie there, on the floor, looking up at the sky, and the clouds moving, both of us just crying.’

Yet what soars above the grim account of their cancer journey is her determination to pay tribute to the man she says ‘brought magic and sparkle into my life’.

As she puts it: ‘Dave once said to me: ‘What are the chances of me, a boy from the back streets of Barrow, and you, a girl from Northern Romania, ending up having the life we have? The odds are less than winning the Lottery.’ ‘

Theirs is a love story that hasn’t really been told. Fans will know that Dave met Liliana when filming the very first series of Hairy Bikers in Eastern Europe.

She was managing a hotel they stayed in. Dave once told me he fell in love (or, more likely, lust) with her on sight, but Si was a tiny bit terrified of her. Was he right to be?

She laughs. ‘Probably. In Romania the culture is very different. If you are a woman doing a big job, you need to assert yourself.’

She laughs even more trying to work out what Dave saw in her. ‘I was showing them to their rooms and we went up a spiral staircase. He was behind me and I had a very short skirt. That was probably it.’

Liliana is a formidable woman. Before going back to university to study tourism and hotel management she had worked her way up from seamstress to production manager at a clothing factory.

But she had married at 20, and in a culture which still wanted its women to ‘stay in the kitchen’.

‘The woman’s job was to be a robot,’ she says. ‘It was to stay in the kitchen and bring up the children. Even if the woman had to work, she still had to do the cleaning and the cooking, while her husband came home and put his feet up. ‘At the time, I thought I was happy, because I didn’t know any better. I didn’t know women could be free.’

Two years before she met Dave, though, Liliana had plucked up the courage to call time on her marriage and was coping alone, in a tiny apartment. She looks around the hotel room where we are doing this interview.

It is nearly six months since Dave died, aged 66, after a two-year battle with cancer

‘Our whole flat was no bigger than this room, and my children wore the key to the front door around their necks because after school they had to let themselves in. I was always working. In the evening, I did book-keeping to make ends meet.’

Enter the Hairy Bikers, ‘who were very hairy’. She hadn’t a clue who they were.

She was professional, helpful, and unaware that Dave was smitten. But then, when they and their film crew had moved on, she received an email from him thanking her for her help.

And so it began. ‘For the next two years we sent emails back and forth. He made me laugh. I looked forward to his emails. It became a beautiful friendship.’

When Dave asked if she would like to come and visit the UK she accepted. How did he woo her? With food, of course.

‘He came to pick me up at the airport in Manchester, and we went back to his house. Don’t get it wrong, there were separate rooms, but I do remember arriving after midnight and he made me a sandwich. I was astonished. A man – cooking for me!’

To be fair, Dave Myers wasn’t a typical British man either. He had come to the world of TV cooking via an art degree from Goldsmiths university. He had also worked in the antiques trade, and as a TV make-up artist.

And he’d been through the mill in his personal life. Both parents had died young, and he had lost a previous love to cancer. Those who knew him always speak of his emotional intelligence, as well as his big heart.

‘Dave was the first man I ever met who made me realise that women could be treated well,’ says Liliana. ‘He had moments when he was like a playful boy with a wicked sense of humour, clever and witty with words. But I witnessed those moments when he was a wise, warm, loving and protective husband and dad.’

That first week, he spoiled her with restaurants and sightseeing trips. He also took her to Newcastle to meet Si, who was then married with young children.

‘I remember having a lovely meal, all round the table. An ordinary family, but with everybody pitching in. I thought: ‘I did not know it could be like this.’ ‘

By 2007 the future was being discussed. ‘Dave said: ‘Shall we make a go of this?’ ‘ she remembers. ‘He went to see the headteacher of a local school and discussed getting my daughter, who was 11, in there. My son was 17 then doing ‘A-levels’, so we decided he would stay with his father in Romania until the following year. He did come and meet Dave, though, during the holidays.’

Dave made me trust that this life is worth living in love, and in full, and for that, I'm eternally grateful, says Liliana

Dave made me trust that this life is worth living in love, and in full, and for that, I’m eternally grateful, says Liliana

And how did that go? Another peal of laughter. ‘They said to him, ‘Don’t touch our mother. Sit over there, and you will be OK.’ But Dave won them over.’

She recalls arriving in the UK to move into Dave’s house, and discovered he had decorated a bedroom especially for Iza.

‘He’d bought a pink desk, a pink lamp. Everything was pink. Iza said to me, in Romanian: ‘I hate pink.’ He asked: ‘What did she say?’ I said: ‘She loves it!’ ‘

Within the first week, Dave took Liliana to see his solicitor. ‘And he drew up wills. He had no family, so he said that if something happened to him, or us, he wanted my children to be provided for. I was speechless.’

They went home and tried to explain this to Iza. ‘In that week, she had picked up a few words of English and it was actually their first conversation.

‘She said to Dave: ‘You die. Me rich?’ Oh my God, he laughed so much. The conversation between them from that moment was sparkle, sparkle, sparkle.’

Not everyone in the family was thrilled, though. Her father was horrified by her move to the UK, and didn’t speak to her for two years. ‘But Dave won my parents over. I remember them coming to stay and my mother marvelling that a man was cooking.

‘My dad wasn’t impressed, but then Dave took him to the pub. They couldn’t have a proper conversation but he told me later that he’d asked my father for my hand in marriage. I’m not sure my dad was aware of that but he started to call Dave his son-in-law even before our wedding.’

Dave never did properly propose, but by 2011 they had decided on a small wedding, for about 40 people. The guest list then snowballed to 400. ‘It was a magical day,’ Liliana says.

By then, the Hairy Bikers were riding high, with back-to-back TV shows and cookery books.

‘Si would come to stay,’ says Liliana. ‘I’d be the guinea pig, testing their recipes. There was always laughter. I mean, they took the business very seriously – I didn’t get involved in that – but what they had together was very special.’

She and Dave had homes in Kent and France, and it was in 2022 when they were on their way to their French property that he received the call that would ‘change everything’. Cancer.

‘We got the call in the car,’ recalls Liliana. ‘I was driving.’

She stayed in the driving seat, in all senses. ‘Dave did crumble,’ she admits. ‘So I couldn’t. For those five days, we just walked on the beach and we cried.’

Dave never revealed what type of cancer he had, and Liliana continues to respect his decision.

The first person Dave told, after Liliana, was Si. ‘I was in the room when he made the phone call. It was not easy. You know you are going to devastate other people’s lives, too.’

Work took a back seat during treatment, but last year another Hairy Bikers series was mooted. ‘Dave asked: ‘Should I?’ I encouraged him. I knew how good for him it would be.’

Fans who watched the show would have had no idea how ill he was during filming. ‘Si basically took over my role, looking after him for the three days a week he was working. Then he’d come home for the hospital treatment.’

Did he and Si know that they were filming for the last time together? ‘Dave did,’ Liliana says. ‘Although at the same time he’d say things like: ‘Well, I’m not going anywhere.’ ‘

The last series, The Hairy Bikers Go West, finished filming in November and aired in January – Dave was able to watch the first episode with Si.

Liliana had hoped for another TV project. ‘Everyone tried their best, and we were trying to work out what and when, but it was Dave himself who said: ‘No, my darling. It is not going to happen.’ ‘

He knew time was running out? She nods. ‘I think so.’

Dave died on February 28, surrounded by those he loved. The public grieving came later. Liliana says she was floored when a ‘Dave Day’ in June resulted in an estimated 46,000 bikers making the ride from London to Barrow. ‘I cannot put into words how much that meant,’ she says.

Si and their friend Woody led that epic ride. After we finish this interview, she is travelling north to go and see Si and his family for the weekend.

Then what? ‘Dave hadn’t finished. We had so many plans. So many places he still wanted to see, so many adventures. I will have to do them for him, but I know he will be with me.

‘I can only express my gratitude for being part of his extraordinary journey and for having him be such a wonderful part of mine. He made me trust that this life is worth living in love, and in full, and for that, I’m eternally grateful.’

Hairy Bikers’ Si King reveals show is over after Dave Myers’ death

Si King announced on Sunday that the Hairy Bikers brand is over following the tragic passing of Dave Myers.

Best pals Si, 57, and Dave worked very closely together for two decades creating a number of much-loved cooking TV shows as well as books and live appearances.

Dave passed away aged 66 in February with Si by his side following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Si has now said it wouldn’t be ‘respectful’ for him to continue as the Hairy Bikers on his own.

Speaking to The Guardian about his next career move, Si said: ‘It can’t be the Hairy Bikers 2.0. That’s not going to happen. It wouldn’t be respectful.’

The TV chef continued: ‘It’s definitely a time of change and change comes at a cost and that cost has been my best friend.’

‘What was wonderful about my mate Dave was that he absolutely embraced the moment. He used to drive me mad. I’d tell him to say something negative for a bit, but he just loved being a Hairy Biker.’

‘Dave and I were two very different people with different agendas and priorities, but we adored each other. The only strategy we had was that if one was vociferously against doing something, then we wouldn’t do it.

‘But Dave was always ready to say yes, much more than me. More times than not he’d win by being relentlessly positive.’

Si went onto admit that being a Hairy Biker ‘was exhausting’ and the pair had to ‘hang on a minute’ and listen to their bodies.

The news that Si will not continue as Hairy Bikers comes after he revealed their last ever cookbook together will be out in October.

He penned: ‘Thrilled to announce our delicious Hairy Biker Triple Hop beer that we lovingly made with @theakstonbrewery is coming to a shelf near you – first stop Waitrose! Go grab a bottle, sit down, relax and enjoy! Si x.’

    Fans were moved by the emotional post, with one saying in the comment section: ‘Very poignant picture’;

    ‘He’s sitting right beside you brother’;

‘So sad missing his best friend. The empty chair breaks my heart’

Elsewhere, he thanks fans for their support and reminded them about the Dave Day Ride Out.

He said: ‘Not long left now till Dave Day!❤️ Be safe everyone and see you at the end of the ride to raise a beer to Dave and all of you!’

It comes after Si thanked fans for their continued support as their new book tops the charts after Dave’s death.

Their latest one, The Hairy Dieters’ Fast & Fresh, focuses on tasty and healthy quick-to-make meals.

After its release on Thursday the publication shot to number one in the Amazon book charts.

Shortly before it was made available, Si shared a short clip to Instagram, he said: ‘It’s a book that Dave and I really enjoyed working on it. It’s a lovely book and we had the greatest of joy working on it together. Dave was very proud of it, so here it is.

‘Thank you for your continued support it doesn’t go unnoticed. Lots of love and I hope you enjoy Fast and Fresh.’

Dave’s death sparked an outpouring of grief from the general public – who mourned the loss of one of the BBC ‘s most popular figures.

Si first met Dave when they were both working in the film industry – Dave as a make-up artist and Si as a locations director – and bonded over their love of food and motorbikes.

Over their career the best friends built up a reputation as the friendly faces of TV cooking, with 31 separate projects since they first debuted on the BBC in 2006.

Dave was married to Lilliana Orzac, whom he met while filming Hairy Bikers in Romania, in 2011 at the star’s hometown in Barrow, Cumbria and was a stepfather to her two children, Izabelle and Sergiu, from a previous relationship.

Taking to social media a week after his funeral, Alpine F1 aero mechanic Sergiu said: ‘It has taken me a while to write this as it’s hard to think about it and still cannot believe you are no longer with us.

‘Last week we said our final goodbyes to one of the most wonderful people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Furthermore I had the honour of calling you my dad.’

‘You have always been an inspiration in my life, and will remain so even now that you are not with us anymore; with your infectious zest for life and unmatched passion for any endeavour you set your mind to. Without you, I would not be the man I am today.’

He added: ‘I’ll end with a little quote from Renoir that I think is fitting and captures the effect you had not only on your family, but the millions of fans worldwide: ‘The pain passes, but the beauty remains”

Izabelle, rather, changed her profile picture to a sweet photo of herself and Dave grinning into the camera, accompanied by a simple ‘heart’ emoji.

Dave announced he was receiving treatment for cancer in May 2022 and bravely kept the public up to date with his progress in a series of emotional TV specials.

Dave had previously spoken lovingly about his devoted stepchildren, with Liliana paying tribute to him as a ‘wonderful stepdad’ in the days following his death.

He admitted that he regretted not having children, however when he met Liliana he became part of her children’s lives and became their stepfather.

He said: ‘A major regret of mine for a long time had been not having children. When I married Lil, I had this ready-made family with two stepchildren.’

It came after Lilliana revealed life feels ’empty and sad’ without her Hairy Biker husband as she vowed to ‘laugh and love like Dave’ and ‘move forward’ though grief in a heartbreaking online post.

The TV chef reportedly left a £1.4million windfall for his wife, as she was named the sole shareholder of his firm after his death.

The Sun reported that paperwork confirms Liliana now has full control of the company.

She was reportedly made a director of Dave’s production company shortly before he revealed his diagnosis in 2022, according to Companies House records seen by the publication.

It has been reported that she has taken over Dave’s shares in the firms he co-owned with Si. Details of his will are yet to be made public.

His death was followed by an outpouring of grief from the general public – who mourned the loss of one of the BBC’s most popular figures, who also starred in Strictly Come Dancing in 2013.

And bikers took to the streets for a memorial ride to pay tribute – with many wearing T-shirts bearing his image as Si said his friend ‘would have loved’ the gesture.

‘The jewels that he threw at me at the beginning were words.

‘We met when he was in the very first series of Hairy Bikers and after Romania, they travelled to Mexico, to Argentina, to Turkey to India – all beautiful places, and he used to send me these beautiful emails, about the food, about the people, about the local smells and about the culture.

‘So, the wonderful emails about these wonderful trips, it just fascinated me and that’s how it started.

‘Then we kind of thought: “Oh, let’s meet up”, and then after he finished filming, we used to meet up in different parts of Europe for weekends and that’s how it started.’

Liliana also told Lorraine of Dave: ‘Everybody who loses somebody in their lives misses them but there’s a different layer because if I turn on the TV, he might be on. There are cookbooks in the house everywhere.

‘He is everywhere. It just transpires and rolls on into this beautiful thing.’

Following his death, Liliana – who has children Izabelle and Sergiu from a previous relationship – was inundated with messages from fans.

Liliana told Lorraine: ‘I had so many messages from all over the world asking how they could pay respects. People loved him and the energy he had always.

Liliana continued: 'The jewels that he threw at me at the beginning were words.' And shared that she fell in love with him over the 'beautiful' emails he would send her from his travels

‘They were asking how they could do something and this idea came to do a motorbike ride in his memory to celebrate his life.

‘Right after he passed, there was this comment on socials that I picked up on, this person was saying: “Dave, brave Dave. ‘Dave’ should be the synonymous to joy, and zest for life.”

‘He was always optimistic, even when he was sick. So, when we’re having a good day we should say “I’m having a Dave day.”‘

Now, thousands of bikers are expected to travel to Dave’s hometown of Barrow-in-Furness from London on Saturday for Dave Day, all in aid of Cancer Research.

The mass ride from London to Barrow will be headed up by Dave’s friend Jason ‘Woody’ Woodcock and the second half of the Hairy Bikers, Si King.

Hairy Bikers were two English celebrity chefs, Dave and Si King, who combined cooking with motorcycling travelogue.

Over their 20 years together, the Hairy Bikers hosted over 30 television series and specials for BBC One, BBC Two, Channel 5, and Good Food, and wrote a number of tie-in cookbooks.

Dave Day will take place on June 8 in Barrow-in-Furness. Details are available on the Visit Barrow website.
