Daryl Hannah revealed that she was ‘incredibly anxious’ about performing nude in the 1984 fantasy-comedy feature Splash during a new interview with People.
The 63-year-old actress starred opposite Tom Hanks in the Ron Howard-directed movie, which followed a young man who fell in love with a woman who turned out to be a mermaid.
Hannah – who shared her support for another actress portraying a mermaid in 2022 – has since revealed that she was ‘really naive’ while working on the film, which was shot when she was in her early twenties.
She also told the media outlet that she was apprehensive about the prospect of appearing nude while working on Splash.
‘I was very world-traveled, but very sheltered at the same time. I hadn’t really had a boyfriend yet…so I was incredibly anxious about any nudity,’ she recalled.

The Kill Bill vol. 1 actress went on to state that Howard’s team devised a method of showing off much of her skin while obscuring her breasts.
She recalled that they ‘came up with my hair covering my boobs because they didn’t want me to have any kind of, I don’t know, shell bathing suit top or anything — which I understood.’
Hannah also discussed a scene where she kissed Hanks, and she recalled that she opted to skip any physical contact during rehearsals.
‘Once you do it once, then it’s easier to get through the next time. But that first time, when you don’t know somebody and you have to kiss them, is so embarrassing. At least for me, it was,’ she said.
Hannah humorously added that her experience of shooting the film was ‘so embarrassing.’
Hannah concluded her interview by expressing that, although she had largely stepped away from her acting career, she would not be averse to appearing in the right project.
‘I suppose if something really cool that I thought would transform me in that kind of way came up, I might do it,’ she said.

Splash became a hit with audiences following its debut, and it took in nearly $70 million worldwide during its period of release, according to Box Office Mojo.
The movie also received positive reviews from critics, and it holds a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Screenwriters Bruce Jay Friedman, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, as well as story contributor and producer Brian Grazer, were all put up for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for their work on the project.
