The second season of The Tourist is set to drop on Stan on January 2.

And now Aussie actress Danielle Macdonald, who stars in the hits series alongside Jamie Doran, has revealed a surprising detail about the upcoming season.

The show’s creators never envisaged a follow up.

‘We’d heard they kind of wanted a Season 2, but it was only ever meant to be a mini-series – it was never meant to have another season,’ Macdonald, 32, told Variety Australia on Monday.

‘A little while later, I was chatting with the writers, and they were like, ”I kind of miss this world,’ and I was like, ”Me too, it’s been really fun”.

‘Then, a month later, they emailed me saying that they wrote a pilot for Season 2. And I was like, great, ”give it to me now,”’ she continued.

In season one, which is set in Australia, Elliott (Dornan) wakes up in an outback hospital after an accident, with no idea about what happened to him or why.

Season two, filmed in Ireland, picks up the story a year later as Elliott tries to get in touch with his roots which leads to complications with his family.

The new season follows the action to Dublin, a year after Elliott left the outback, as he comes face to face with his past.

Helen (played by Macdonald), an outback cop, travels to Ireland with Dornan’s troubled character, only to be dragged into the mystery of his past life.

Macdonald adds: ‘The writers have a very specific writing style. It’s funny, it’s dark, it’s wild, and it’s crazy. It was a world I wanted to be a part of.’

Earlier this month Macdonald revealed to the Daily Mail Australia what it was like working alongside her sexy Fifty Shades of Grey co-star

‘Jamie is amazing and great. He is really fun, funny and incredibly trustworthy and supportive,’ she said.

‘I always felt 100% taken care of and we also work very similarly. We are always on the same page about characters. He has always got your back so he is a joy to work with.’

She also insisted he is nothing like his controversial character Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey.

‘I don’t see him as Christian Grey at all. If anything, he is further from him. He is like a big goofball and a very funny Irish guy. Not this like stud hardcore man,’ she added.

‘He is so many worlds apart from that character as a human being that I can’t even see that character in him.’

Danielle also said it was ‘amazing’ filming season two of The Tourist in Ireland.
