Dakota Johnson Welcomes New Family Addition After Chris Martin Split

Dakota Johnson has added a new member to her family just as she has reportedly said goodbye to her longtime fiance Chris Martin.

The Fifty Shades Darker actress, 35, has adopted a cute little dog to keep her company as she faces her new life as a single woman.

When on Amy Poehler‘s Good Hang Podcast, she debuted her new puppy named Tokyo.

The daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson said she adopted the canine from the Santa Barbara Humane Society in California.

‘We rescued her on Saturday from the Santa Barbara pound,’ she said, adding: ‘I didn’t plan on it.’

Dakota admitted she was still coping with the death of her previous dog Zeppelin, who died in December at age 17. ‘I thought, “It’s gonna be a while,”‘ she recalled. ‘But then I saw her, and she’s an angel.’

And the pup has plenty of energy.

‘She’s a performer,’ Dakota joked. ‘Honestly, she has come alive on camera. She normally hides in the back of her crate. She’s really timid. And now she’s like, “Here I am.”

‘You’re an actress just like your mom!’ she cooed to her four-legged friend.

Johnson and Martin were previously engaged and had been together for eight years on and off. 

A source told DailyMail.com: ‘Their relationship has been over for a long time, they just haven’t been able to figure out to make it official. 

‘Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much. 

‘Breakups aren’t instant and they continued to breakup and makeup and sometimes things would work when they were away from each other, while they were working because absence makes the heart grow fonder.

‘But then they’d get back together and little things just kept adding up to where they weren’t right for each other anymore.

‘Dakota is devastated that she isn’t going to be around his kids as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them.’

The source added there is a chance the pair may reconcile but ‘right now, being separated will do wonders if they were to have any type of future together.’

DailyMail.com has reached out to representatives for Johnson and Martin for comment but did not immediately hear back.

The pair had a brief rumored split in 2019 which was alleged to be over Martin pushing for them to have children, but they quickly got back together.

Martin famously split from actress wife Gwyneth Paltrow, the mother of his two children Apple, 21, and Moses, 19, in March 2014 after ten years of marriage.

The then-Hollywood power couple described their separation at the time as a ‘conscious uncoupling’ and had their divorce finalized in July 2016.

Martin was reported to be in an on-and-off relationship with actress Annabelle Wallis before they split in August 2017.

He was first seen with Dakota at a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles in October 2017 when they were reported to be ‘cozy, laughing and affectionate’.

Dakota, the daughter of Don Johnson, 75, and Melanie Griffith, 68, was spotted a month later at a Coldplay concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina, leading to fans posing social media pictures of her enjoying the show.

This comes after she was quizzed about her dating life in a shock interview on Monday.

The timing is interesting as the very recently split from Martin, 48.

In an appearance on The Today Show Craig Melvin asked her and her Materialists co-star Chris Evans a sensitive question.

‘If either of you were to engage with a real-life matchmaker, what would be one non-negotiable for you?’ asked Craig.

Evans said that his prospective partner ‘must love dogs.’ 

Johnson’s answer was barbed. ‘Like, not an a**hole,’ she blurted out, which made both the audience and those on set with her laugh.

‘That’s concise,’ Evans, 43, said. ‘There it is! Nail on the head.’

On Saturday, Dakota and Evans walked the red carpet at the New York City premiere of their film Materialists.

While meandering down the step-and-repeat, she puckered her lips and kissed her hunky co-star.

Dakota appeared to be in high spirits as she posed with Evans and held up a cardboard cutout of her on-screen love interest Pedro Pascal.

At one point, Johnson and Evans had their arms wrapped around each other tightly, and she leaned over to kiss cardboard Pascal’s lips.

The display at her film premiere comes just shortly after Martin gave her a surprise shout-out while closing out the Coldplay show in Las Vegas on Friday night.

The singer unexpectedly referenced Johnson’s latest film while speaking to the crowd in between songs.

‘Be kind to yourself. Be kind to each other,’ he admonished before adding, ‘Don’t forget to see Materialists! We love you!’
