Cynthia Nixon Opens Up About Her Unconventional Family and Today’s Youth

Cynthia Nixon has opened up about her unconventional family of 11 adults with five kids. 

The actress, 59, who shot to stardom in the late 1990s as Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City, knows about the many faces of parenting.

She has two children from her time with ex-partner Danny Mozes and one son with her now wife Christine Marinoni.

Ex Danny, who she remained good friends with, married a woman who is widowed and has two children, making their combined children a total of five. 

Speaking to Elizabeth Day on her podcast How To Fail about her blended family, she said: ‘My boyfriend and I, we were together for fifteen years and we had two children, whom are now respectively 28, 22, and 14.

‘And the last one, I did not give birth to him, my wife gave birth to him, and we had him with a male couple who are both his dads.

‘My ex we were never married, but he is married to a woman who is a widow, was a widow, and who has two children, two twins, from her first husband. 

‘Yes, we have between us five children, but I think I calculated it one time, because I do worry about how many people there are in the world, and I thought, ‘well we have five children, but in order to get those five children, there were eleven adults’.’

Elsewhere in the podcast, Cynthia tearfully discussed the future of today’s youth, as she explained how ‘thankful’ she is for young people.

She said: ‘I just feel like I see my kids and my ex’s kids, and I just feel like these are just such impressive people. 

‘I feel as hard as we want to fight for things like climate change or fighting intolerance our young people have a better road map, and I think it’s important for us to follow them.

‘I think no matter how hard you try and see, you come to the age that I am, which I think is 59, you can’t erase the decades of “Well this is how it is, this is how it’s always been”.’

She continued: ‘I think young people can say “why” and “we won’t accept it” and “we can do something better, we can do something revolutionary” that a person my age, no matter how much good will I have, wouldn’t see.’

Cynthia’s youngest son Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni, 14, is lucky enough to have the most parents of the brood – with two mothers and two fathers to watch out for him.

Sex And The City costume designer Michael Growler and his husband William Bowers are referred to by the actress as Max’s ‘dads’.

Christine gave birth to Max in February 2011 and it’s believed that Growler is his biological father.

The youngster spends one night a week with his dads and the rest of his time with his two mothers.

Although Max was carried by Christine, Cynthia gushed that she has no concerns about not being biologically related to him, after giving birth to her two eldest.

She told The Times: ‘I feel like the dynamics are gonna be there, whether those children are your biological children or not.’

Back in 2019, Cynthia revealed the identity of Max’s father as she shared a photo of the young boy being outfitted in his Halloween costume.

She wrote: ‘When your dad’s a costumer and you always wanted to be Pennywise…’

Michael and Cynthia have a relationship that stretches back decades, having first worked together on Rabbit Hole.

He also worked with the actress on both Sex and the City films, and in 2017, the pair headed back to the Great White Way for Little Foxes.
