Craig David’s Journey from Council Estate to £14.5M Success

Craig David has revealed he has no regrets over the course of his career as it took him from living on a council estate to having a slew of top 10 hits.

Prior to rocketing to fame in his early 20s, Craig lived on the Holyrood Estate near Southampton city centre.

Now, the chart-topping singer has an estimated net worth of £14.5 million.

Speaking to Daily Mail, Craig, 45, shared: ‘No one could have told me when I was a young kid growing up in my council flat with my mum, that 25 years later I’d have the career that spans this amount of time and that the songs would mean so much to people.’

Reflecting on his latest arena tour, Craig mused: ‘There were kids like 15/16 years old then there was people who grew up with my music – I was thinking this is mad, this is two generations having a moment.’

Insisting that he has no regrets about any of the choices he’s made, he mused: ‘Because everything leads you to where you are now.’

Craig continued: ‘Every choice, every wrong, right, left, right, up, down led me to stand here and you learn from it.

‘The tough times give you resolve and they give you courage and they give you strength.

‘Otherwise you just coast and you never really know about the ebb and flow.’

Craig was speaking ahead of an intimate one-off gig at the locally loved café Johnnies in Camberwell, South London, where he was celebrating his collaboration with Just Eat.

The family-run café transformed into a mini club for one night only as Craig took to the stage to perform his signature TS5 set and gave fans the first-ever live performance of the viral Just Eat anthem Every Neighbour Got Their Flava.

On being asked to work with the brand – which has also collaborated with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera – Craig shared: ‘To get the call to do this among artists that have had a number of hits over the course of their career…

‘I genuinely felt really honored and appreciated.’

Craig is one of the biggest British artists, having scored 16 top 10 singles in the UK alone.

He shot to fame with his debut studio album Born To Do It in 2000, which spawned hits including Fill Me In, 7 Days and Rewind.

The record went straight to No.1 in August that year, instantly changing Craig’s life forever.

Craig wrote his debut album in the bedroom of his childhood home – which he returned to earlier this year for a campaign with Shelter.

His new track, Every Neighbour Got Their Flava, is a cheeky nod to his own 2002 track What’s Your Flava?

The lyrics make references to ‘relatable everyday moments’, from calling for an ‘SOS’ because the chilli has run out to ordering ‘nappies, coffee, rolls to go’ as busy working parents.

It also paid homage to the range of products and dishes customers can buy using Just Eat, including groceries and takeaway, as well as pharmaceutical or electronic items.

The accompanying music video took viewers on a journey through the UK and Ireland, giving insight into the rich diversity of flavours that punctuate Britain’s bustling neighbourhoods.
