Randy Travis’ spouse Mary said she intuitively rejected advice from his doctors to take him off life-saving medical devices after he suffered a stroke a dozen years back – as she knew the country singer believed in himself and would battle back.
‘I think Randy, there was never a doubt in Randy’s mind that he could make it through it,’ Mary told Fox News Digital on Tuesday of her spouse, who has used AI in recent years to make music after losing his voice due to the stroke.
Mary said doctors at one point suggested she authorize them to ‘pull the plug’ on the medical machines that were keeping Randy alive amid the toughest times in his health crisis following the 2013 stroke, as his collective ailments piled up.
‘It was that magical moment that I went to his bedside when they said, “We need to pull the plug,”‘ Mary said. ‘He’s got too many things going against him at that point.”‘
Mary told the outlet about some of the most tense moments in her spouse’s yearslong health battle.
‘He had gotten a staph infection and three other hospital-born bacterial viruses like Serratia, Pseudomonas, one thing after another, and the doctors were just saying, “He just doesn’t have the strength to get through this,”‘ Mary said.

Mary explained one incident in which doctors explained to them that amid plunging vitals and a low blood count, the end was perilously close.
‘That’s when I went to him,’ Mary said. ‘That was the moment that I knew that Randy Travis was gonna make it because he squeezed my hand and a tear went down his face. And I said, “He’s still fighting.”‘
Mary said she took on a ‘mama bear’ mentality, and that she told doctors they were going to do their best to ‘fight with him’ amid the adverse circumstances.
‘I knew at that point in time, because he had every odd in the world against him, and he wasn’t giving up,’ said the supportive spouse. ‘And I was so encouraged by that, to be honest. He was my inspiration.’
