Jerrod Carmichael is at the center of social media controversy after a joke on his new HBO special, Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, fell flat with audiences.
The comedian-writer, 36, raised eyebrows with a joke about the dynamics of his interracial relationship, as he is dating a white man named Mike.
‘I sometimes joke to him that our relationship is like that of a slave and a master’s son … who, like, teaches me how to read by candlelight,’ the comedian said.
The Emmy-winning entertainer, who publicly came out as gay in 2022, responded to groans from the crowd, ‘Yeah, he groans too ’cause he’s a good person.
‘He doesn’t like that f***ing joke – I like that joke – that’s my burden, I think that s***’s hilarious.’
