Carol Burnett put her legendary comedic timing on display on Monday while presenting at the star-studded 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.
The 90-year-old comedian took to the stage at the Peacock Theater in an all-black outfit to present the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Burnett received a standing ovation from audience and tugged her left ear traditionally before she spoke.
‘I was lucky enough to be the first female host of a comedy variety show from 1967 to 1978. Eleven years! And that was a long time ago, and I just want to say that a lot has changed over the last 46 years for the better,’ Burnett earnestly said.
‘Progress has been made. And it, uh, truly warms my heart to see how well men are doing in comedy now,’ Burnett quipped as the audience erupted in laughter.

Steve Martin, 78, and Martin Short, 73, were shown in the audience cracking up at Burnett’s joke.
Burnett then presented the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series to Quinta Brunson, 34, for her portrayal of teacher Janine Teagues in Abbott Elementary, which Brunson also created, executive produces and writes.
Christina Applegate, 52, introduced Burnett to the stage and noted that she forever changed variety television.
She said that before Carol variety television was a ‘male dominion’, but she broke new ground with sketches that have withstood the test of time.
Brunson got emotional when presented with her award by the legendary comedian.
‘Wow. Thank you so much. I don’t even know. I’m so emotional. Like the Carol Burnett of it all,’ Brunson said during her acceptance speech as her voice cracked with emotion.
Brunson also was nominated this awards season at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.
She’s up for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series at the upcoming 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards in February.
