Christopher Nolan revealed that a Peleton instructor ripped his film Tenet while he was attending a virtual class.
The Oppenheimer director, 53, made the revelation on Thursday at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, held at New York City’s TAO Downtown.
Nolan at the event was honored with Best Director for his summer blockbuster about scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the making of the atomic bomb.
The Oscar-nominated filmmaker said that the instructor – who he did not name – let loose with a lambasting of his 2020 sci-fi film, which starred John David Washington and Robert Pattinson.
‘I was on my Peloton – I’m dying,’ he said, according to Variety. ‘And the instructor started talking about one of my films and said, “Did anyone see this? That’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again!”‘

The instructor, Jenn Sherman, said she found the 2020 motion picture confusing
The London native mentioned the fitness instructor’s critique in making the point that all moviegoers, with social media and other platforms, are influential critics, to some extent.
The Inception filmmaker joked that when famed movie critic Rex Reed ‘takes a s*** on your film he doesn’t ask you to work out.’
He added, ‘In today’s world, where opinions are everywhere, there is a sort of idea that film criticism is being democratized, but I for one think the critical appreciation of films shouldn’t be an instinct but it should be a profession.’
After Nolan made the remarks at the event, people online retrieved and posted the clip in question, featuring the instructor, Jenn Sherman, who has more than 227,000 Instagram followers.
Sherman, in a clip from the session, expressed her disdain for investing time into a film she found confusing after Travis Scott’s The Plan, a song from the film’s soundtrack, began playing.
‘This song is from a soundtrack of a movie called Tenet – anybody see this s***?’ she said. ‘Did anybody see this besides me? Because I need a manual.
‘Someone’s got to explain this [movie,] I’m not kidding. Yeah, I’m not kidding, What the f*** was going on in that movie? Seriously, you need to be a neuroscientist to understand … that’s two-and-a-half hours of my life that I want back.’
In his acceptance speech, Nolan said that ‘directors have a complex emotional relationship with critics and criticism.

He added, ‘A question we’re always asked is: “Do we read reviews?” Let’s start with the fact that I’m British. A typical family gathering will involve relatives saying to me, “You know, Christopher. You probably shouldn’t open The Guardian today.”‘
