The Bachelorette #20 Charity Lawson broke down in tears recalling the racially-charged cyberbullying she experienced during the 32nd season of Dancing with the Stars last year, which was ‘so much worse’ than her prior reality TV competitions.
‘I was getting death threats for existing…for not performing enough, for being conceited, for being entitled,’ the 28-year-old therapist confessed on Sex, Lies and Spray Tans podcast on Sunday.
‘It was so damaging, night in, night out.’
Charity told host Cheryl Burke she ‘went through hell and back with my mental health’ whenever she glanced at the comments on DWTS’ official Instagram account, which she claimed were not filtered at the time (but appear to be filtered seven months later).
‘The difference that I have to go through this life as a black woman and being on a reality TV show. It’s like the same things are just not protected,’ Lawson noted.

‘There were weeks where I’d come home from rehearsal where I’m like, “I literally hope I forget my steps and get voted off.”…It’s a really dark place.’
Despite this, the Georgia native and dance partner Artem Chigvintsev lasted all 11 episodes and came in fourth place while Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy won the coveted Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.
‘[Even my video packages were] shaped this way that I was boasting and bragging about my scores but I’m only talking about them because you guys asked me,’ Charity complained.
‘That was really frustrating when I started to see my packages painted in this way. It’s almost skewing the viewers in this way of, “All she cares about are scores” (and) “She thinks she’s better than everyone.”‘
Lawson is currently planning her upcoming nuptials to her winning Bachelorette contestant – integrative medicine specialist Dotun Olubeko – who popped the question April 30, 2023 while filming the 20th season of the dating competition.
The Auburn University grad is every bit the influencer with paid partnerships for brands like Hismile US, Maybelline New York, Baha Mar Resorts, and Jockey.
Charity first found fame finishing in fourth place during the 27th season of ABC’s The Bachelor featuring Zach Shallcross.
