Chappell Roan Creates Backstage Petting Zoo to Soothe Nerves at Edinburgh’s Royal Highland Centre

Chappell Roan set up her own petting zoo backstage at Summer Sessions to ‘calm peoples’ nerves’ while she took to the stage at Edinburgh’s Royal Highland Centre.

The Pink Pony Club singer, 27, who performed for two nights during the event in Scotland, set up a special enclosure for her artists to enjoy before the show.

As part of her miniature zoo, Chappell had a pony, two Highland cattle, four Labradors and two goats, according to her supporting Drag Queen act, Shego Sinner.

Shego – whose real name is Lewis Kelly – confessed in a reel shared to Instagram on Friday that she thought the nerve-reliving stunt was ‘insane’ and ‘random’.

The performer had been asked by Chappell to support her and former Little Mix singer Jade alongside fellow queens Glasgow’s Eve Devine and Edinburgh’s Blaze.

Taking to their social media, Shego said: ‘It was an amazing crazy day that was over in a flash and it was incredible meeting Chappell, but I couldn’t believe it when we were shown the petting zoo which she had as part of her rider.

‘She had a pony, not pink, two highland cows, four black Labrador puppies and two goats in a special hanger backstage and just before we all performed they were led away so that the sound wouldn’t disturb them.

‘They were so sweet and the three of us just loved seeing them. My friend Latex also held one of the puppies.’

Shego, who was asked on Friday to perform at the huge gig, managed to get her designer friend Gillian King to make her a special outfit and she got it within forty eight hours.

She said: ‘It was a bigger audience than the Corset Club where the capacity is 110 – their capacity was 30,000-40,000.

‘I’m also scared of heights so was a bit worried about the high stage but it all worked out on the day.

‘I hadn’t been that nervous in drag for a long time – I think the Majesty Pageant in Edinburgh was the last time I got so nervous.’

She added: ‘Thankfully my nerves just vanished when I hit the stage and the audience joined in with the songs.’

Shego arrived at the venue for 3pm and met Chappell at 5:45pm, before she and the queens went on stage at 6pm.

She said: ‘Chappell was lovely but really shy. She doesn’t talk a lot on mic and she came across as quite shy and reserved.

‘She knew all of our names and knew who each of us were when she spoke to us ahead of performing.’

It comes after earlier this year the entertainer ignited a generational divide when she said in an interview: ‘I don’t know a single person who is happy and has children at this age’.

Recognised for her drag aesthetic and punchy feminist lyrics, Chappell identifies as a lesbian.

While appearing on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, she was asked by the host if she would ever have children.

She answered unequivocally: ‘All of my friends who have kids are in hell. I don’t know anyone who’s happy and has children at this age.’

The star reiterated, ‘I have not met anyone who is happy, anyone who has light in their eyes, anyone who has slept [who has a child under five].’

The remarks prompted a fiery debate online.

Some mothers insisted it ‘was not an accurate or healthy message to peddle, particularly when the birth rate is down.’

One person wrote: ‘Chappell Roan going on Call Her Daddy saying none of her friends with kids are happy, is a prime example of why you cannot just vent to anyone.’

Someone else wished, ‘May the friendship of narcissistic childless women with no sense of loyalty ever find me.’

Meanwhile, others related to Chappell’s statements, with one person weighing in: ‘The people who have made me most scared to become a mother are mothers.

‘What Chappell said is all I see because lots of mothers I see are like, “This is miserable” and mothers can also be the most competitive, nasty and judgmental people.’
