Twiggy fans are shocked as they find out how the iconic 60s model got her famous nickname aged 15

Fashion model Twiggy – real name Dame Lesley Lawson – was one of the biggest names of the Swinging Sixties, but few people know how she got her famous nickname.

Famed for her large, dark eyes and short, bobbed hairstyle, her looks have inspired generations and saw her named the ‘The Face of ’66’.

But even before she was scouted for an interview by a Daily Mirror fashion journalist at the age of just 16, her looks were a subject of interest.

One early commentator was hairstylist Nigel Davies (later Justin de Villeneuve), who nicknamed her ‘Twigs’ because of her slim frame.

He played a crucial role in her eventual rise to fame, creating her famous bob, which was spotted by the fashion journalist on a salon wall.

After making her tabloid debut, Twiggy modelled for the likes of Vogue and Tatler within the space of a year.

It is believed that Twiggy’s petite frame set her apart from the more voluptuous models whose body types were in fashion in earlier decades.

Twiggy became so big, in fact, that she was voted Woman of the Year by the British public.

But her influence spread overseas too and she brought her British, London sixties style to France, Japan, and the US.

Twiggy, now 75, eventually retired from modelling in 1970 and went on to have a hugely successful career as an actress and writer before returning to modelling in 2005.

She joked at the time of her initial retirement: ‘You can’t be a clothes hanger your entire life!’

Notable film credits she went on to have include The Boy Friend (1971), which saw her nominated for two Golden Globes.

News of how Twiggy got her famous nickname has resurfaced following the release of her new film, also named Twiggy, which was released on Thursday (March 7).

It documents her rise to fame on the big screen for the first time, featuring other icons of the era like Sir Paul McCartney.

Viewers were quick to take to social media to praise the model’s good looks after she appeared on The One Show to promote the film.

One fan wrote on Twitter/X: ‘#TheOneShowTwiggy is stunning! How does she never age. Can’t believe she’s 75??? Looks more like 55. Seriously what’s her secret?’

The film’s synopsis reads: ‘An intimate, star-studded dive into the birth of an icon, and everything that followed.

‘A look at the life of the greatest it-girl of all time.

‘Featuring contributions from Dustin Hoffman, Paul McCartney, Charlotte Tilbury, Joanna Lumley, and many more, Twiggy is an exploration of the model’s upbringing, career, relationships, and everything else that has made her the woman she is today, and the first time the icon has told her story first-hand.’

Twiggy recalls nightmare interview with ‘misogynist’ Woody Allen as she claims he quizzed her on her favourite philosophers to ‘make her look stupid’

Twiggy has recalled a nightmare interview with Woody Allen which saw the filmmaker ask her about her favourite philosophers in a bid to ‘make her look stupid’.

Fresh off a breakthrough year which saw one newspaper brand the model ‘the face of 1966’, a 17-year-old Twiggy took the hot seat on the American host’s chat show as her career went from strength to strength.

But the discussion did not go to plan with Woody throwing seemingly irrelevant questions at the rising star in front of a studio audience.

In an interview with The Guardian on the day a documentary about her life hits cinemas, Twiggy, now 75, joined the film’s director Sadie Frost in recounting her ascent to fame.

Among the hiccups along the way was the infamous appearance on Woody’s programme and Twiggy said of the incident: ‘He was trying to make me look stupid. My heart sank. I remember looking at him, pleading with my eyes for him to stop.

‘If I was the age he was there, in my 30s, I would never have behaved like that towards someone who was only 17.’

Sadie added that she had experienced similar behaviour across her own acting career.

The director said: ‘It’s definitely misogyny. I had it myself from men: “What classical composers do you know? What books have you read?”‘

It all backfired on Woody when the model threw the question back at the host whose mind blanked for an excruciating 10 seconds.

Twiggy also reflected on her relationship with ex-boyfriend and former manager Justin de Villeneuve, who initially acted as a reassuring presence for her father as her modelling career took off in the 60s.

At the time, the star was only 15 and 10 years younger than her partner, but she made sure not to criticise the businessman, noting his ability to ‘protect’ her.

Twiggy and Sadie looked back at various chat show clips which regularly saw Justin speak on his girlfriend’s behalf, despite her superior fame, and Sadie pointed out that he would probably have acted as a restraint on the model’s career had they not separated in 1973.

Last month, the former actress revealed she was left ‘shocked’ after she mistakenly thought a letter notifying her of her damehood was a tax notice.

The model, whose real name is Dame Lesley Lawson, was appointed a dame in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to fashion, the arts and charity.

Speaking to Saga Magazine, Twiggy said: ‘I was so shocked when it happened. I got this official letter and thought, “oh my God, it’s a tax letter”.

‘Then I opened it and it was written in a kind of legalese language. I thought it was saying I was being made a CBE.

‘I called the phone number on the bottom of the letter and spoke to a really nice lady. I asked her if it was true I was being offered a CBE.

‘She said, “no, they are offering you a damehood”.’

BRIAN VINER reviews Twiggy: A beguiling portrait of the waif with a trucker’s laugh who defined the late Sixties

There were mononymous female stars before Twiggy. Cher, for example, was already famous by the time Nellie and Norman Hornby’s youngest daughter Lesley was reinvented as Twiggy in 1966. And there have been many since: Madonna, Adele, Beyonce, Rihanna…

But none of those other single names evoke a time and a place – London in the Swinging Sixties – as powerfully as Twiggy does. And by far the most absorbing part of Sadie Frost’s thoroughly enjoyable (if rather gushing) documentary concerns those eventful years.

Frost’s only previous documentary was about the designer Mary Quant, another woman synonymous with the Sixties.

But, as cultural icons go, even the redoubtable Quant was quickly eclipsed by the ‘shy, introspective’ working-class teenager from Neasden in north-west London.

It all started with a haircut. Looking for shampoo, 16-year-old Lesley popped into a posh Mayfair salon, House of Leonard, where Leonard himself spotted her and asked if she’d mind modelling his new pixie cut.

The cropping and bleaching took seven hours. She was then packed off to have photographs taken, the fashion editor of the Daily Express noticed them, and her life changed. She acquired a new name and was hailed as ‘The Face of ’66’.

Other celebrated models of the era pop up to recall what happened next, as Twiggy’s boyish 31-23-32 figure and her ‘gender-fluid little elfin face’, as Joanna Lumley puts it, made her the world’s pre- eminent supermodel.

What didn’t happen next, even at the height on both sides of the Atlantic of so-called Twiggy-mania, was any hint of big-headedness. Paul McCartney points out that her blue-collar roots kept her grounded. ‘What you saw was what you got,’ he says. Not to mention what you heard. Another friend, Dustin Hoffman, fondly recalls her ‘truck-driver’s laugh’.

Twiggy herself, still beautiful at 75 and as engagingly down-to-earth as ever, delivers recollections throughout. She politely remembers Justin de Villeneuve, her boyfriend and manager in those early years, who did become too big for his trendy boots and was duly kicked into touch.

The appealing paradox of Twiggy is that for all her impressive versatility (she later forged parallel careers as a singer and a surprisingly good actress), she has never changed. She remains authentically herself, in a business in which not many are. Nor, despite the painful break-up of her first marriage to American actor Michael Witney (father of her only child, Carly, and a roaring alcoholic), does she appear to have any skeletons in her closet.

That might not make her the most compelling subject were it not for everything else in her closet: the clothes, the ineffable style, the indelible images. Frost’s documentary becomes steadily less interesting as she turns her gaze to the older Twiggy as the saviour of Marks & Spencer, the honour of being made a dame in 2019, and her long, seemingly blissful second marriage to actor and director Leigh Lawson.

But if only for the way it chronicles those tumultuous early years, it is a treat.

Writer-director Nick Love’s film Marching Powder, about a very different brand of working-class Londoner, is no kind of treat. That is, unless you savour multiple use of the C-word, in which dubious accomplishment it surely sets some kind of record. Danny Dyer plays Jack, a 45-year-old thug addicted to cocaine and football hooliganism.

After he is arrested following a street battle in Grimsby, a judge tells him he has six weeks to mend his ways or face jail. He must give up drugs and violence, which will jeopardise his status with his loutish, like-minded friends, but might help to repair his marriage to the long-suffering Dani (Stephanie Leonidas).

It is Dani’s father, a millionaire builder, to whom Jack owes his lavish lifestyle – but only for as long as he and Dani stay together. Unhelpfully, his father-in-law (who also funds a private education for Jack’s son JJ, played by Dyer’s real-life son Arty) then decrees that Jack must chaperone his bi-polar brother-in-law, Kenny Boy, just released from prison, making it a lot harder to stay on the straight and narrow. That’s pretty much it.

Anyone who had the misfortune to see Love’s 2004 film The

Football Factory, also starring Dyer, will recognise the way it glorifies alpha-male brutishness while masquerading as an indictment of it.

I loathed pretty much every moment of this movie and its mannered, sub-Guy

Ritchie style, but it did remind me of a story I cherish. A few years ago, according to a policeman friend of mine, a bunch of middle-aged Aston Villa hooligans arranged a dust-up in a supermarket car park with a Crewe Alexandra gang before a pre-season friendly. When they arrived and realised their adversaries were kids, no older than 16, they advised them to go home before they got hurt.

Happily, the advice was taken. But the detail I have always loved is that the Crewe gang called themselves ‘The Crewetons’, thinking it made them sound hard, not that it evoked little fried cubes of bread floating on top of a wholesome soup.

All films are in cinemas now.

Twiggy said: ‘In the middle of us chatting on the podcast, I asked if she was going to do any others because it was so good, and she said, ‘I’d love to do you’, because she’s fascinated with the 1960s.

‘So the following week we went out for lunch and it grew from there.

Twiggy – who is married to husband Leigh Lawson – looked as youthful as ever in her bright outfit for the event.

During an interview last year, Twiggy credited ‘luck’ as the secret to her long marriage to her husband Leigh.

Twiggy married the actor in 1988, following the death of her first husband Michael Witney five years earlier.

Twiggy told Good Housekeeping’s September issue due to their past experiences with love, she and Leigh have always been ‘a little gentler’ with their romance.

She said: ‘[Leigh and I] have been together for 38 years, which is frightening! I suppose luck has a lot to do with it.

‘You never know when you meet somebody how it’s all going to turn out or what life is going to throw at you.

‘We’ve both been through things that didn’t work out for various reasons and when you’ve had that experience, you’re a little gentler when you meet someone else.’

Twiggy is considered one of the most iconic supermodels in history, and first rose to prominence in the 1960s with her piercing blue eyes and beautiful bone structure.

Angelina’s film Maria follows the life of famed opera singer Maria Callas.

The film opens in the last days of the soprano’s life and looks back on all the triumphs and tragedies along the way.

Callas died of a heart attack at her Paris home on September 16, 1977. She was 53.

Angelina said that roles like Callas come along ‘once in a lifetime,’ adding, ‘I mean, it’s certainly the most challenging,’ Deadline reported.

To portray the opera singer, Angelina spent seven months learning six of the late singer’s most famous arias.

Angelina was also excited to work with director Pablo Larraín saying, ‘This kind of work is not asked of me very often. And if it’s asked of me, it’s not often with this kind of material and this director, so these things come once in a lifetime.’

Her experience making the film ‘was beyond anything I could imagine, and it was a gift emotionally for me,’ she said, adding that the role, ‘changed me as a person. It helped heal a part of me.’

The Mr. and Mrs. Smith actress said it is hard to explain all the ways the role changed and healed her.

‘It would be too personal to explain. But from that first day [on set] not being able to breathe and crying to singing at the top of my lungs at La Scala, Milan, those moments changed me.’

‘Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream,’ Pablo Larraín said in a statement to Variety.

Robin Ince accuses Ricky Gervais of bullying on tour

From savaging Hollywood stars at the Golden Globe awards ceremony to mocking eco-activist Greta Thunberg in his stand-up act, Ricky Gervais has never shied away from provoking the rich and famous.

But a fellow comedian, Robin Ince, claims Gervais’s backstage jeers at him took a physical toll on his health when they toured together.

‘I look back now, and I think it is bullying, really it is,’ Ince claims. ‘I’m very good at sometimes just acclimatising to things, in which you go, ’actually, this is really weird’.

‘But people who knew me did not like the way that relationship worked. I am not saying it is a traumatic experience, but after two weeks I came out in red lumps that my doctor said were a stress rash. I think my hair is coming out in clumps.’

Speaking on The Starting Line podcast, Ince, 55, claims that Gervais’s ‘bullying’ became so bad his co-star in The Office Mackenzie Crook stepped in and confronted him about it.

A fellow comedian has claimed Gervais’ backstage jeers at him took a physical toll on his health when they toured together

Ince announced his retirement in 2015, saying he was ‘starting to go mad’ with self-doubt, insomnia and regret over not spending enough time with his family.

He remained friends with Gervais, 63, until 2022 when he wrote a blog post criticising him for making jokes about transgender people in his Netflix comedy special SuperNature.

‘It is easy to forget the collateral damage of jokes,’ Ince said.

‘Anti-trans punchlines seem to have become highly profitable and it ignores the dehumanising effect on a swathe of already marginalised people,’ he wrote, adding: ‘I think Ricky believes it is just him being a ‘naughty boy’.

I believe it makes him a pin-up and role model for the alt-Right.’

    Gervais declines to comment.

End of an era for Twiggy’s pins!

She was the poster-girl of the miniskirt in Swinging London in the 1960s, but Twiggy has signalled the end of an era by declaring that she’s too old to show off her pins.

Dame Lesley Lawson, as she’s properly known, turns 75 tomorrow.

She says: ‘When it comes to fashion, I don’t like all these age labels.

‘But I do make an exception when it comes to miniskirts and hotpants. The only time I wear shorts is when I’m on holiday and they’re proper shorts.

‘You’ve got to think about what suits you and what you look – or feel – good in. The comfort factor’s important, too.’

Ginger Spice makes a winning bet on the horses

Ginger Spice appears to have made a winning bet on the horses. Geri and Christian Horner have enjoyed a bumper year at their racehorse owning company, OMBI. Newly published accounts reveal they undertook a £600,000 spending spree last year, forking out £137,000 on biological assets, £280,000 on buildings and £187,000 on motor vehicles to take assets held to just under £1million. They made a profit, with retained earnings after bills climbing to £220,000 from £69,000.

A Married At First Sight star is locked in a legal battle with a company owned by Australia’s richest man, mining magnate Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest.

Bronson Norrish, 39, who runs Perth-based The Australian Party Boat Charters, commissioned SFM Marine – which is owned by Forrest – to conduct a marine hoisting service on his vessel back in 2022.

Norrish alleges his boat was damaged during process and is taking SFM Marine to court for the costs of the $730,969 repair bill.

He is also seeking an additional $586,792 for loss of profits between July 2022 and March 2023, which brings the total sum to $1.317million.

Norrish is claiming SFM Marine failed to ‘provide appropriate support to the vessel’s hull during the lifting and standing’, reports The Australian.

Although SFM Marine deny any liability, they have offered to pay Norrish a sum of $125,000 and to waive their maintenance fee of $54,000.

According to The Australian, lawyers for SFM Marine have sent Norrish’s team a letter saying if he does not accept the offer then no counter offer will be made and they will defend the claim entirely.

‘Losing our main money on a boat, losing one full season of operating and having to take out a million-dollar loan to pay repair costs associated with the damage has put us in the red,’ he said.

‘The reason we kept pushing through and doing the repairs was because SFM were willing to pay and admitted fault. Now they’ve done a 180 and we’ve got no way of paying off the debt.’

Norrish added if he does not receive the settlement he is fighting for his company because he won’t be able to pay debts and will risk foreclosure.

‘I wish I had started earlier. It has changed my life. I do it once a week for an hour with a wonderful teacher and I always say to her, ”Rachel you’ve changed my life!” I have really built up the strength in my core and my back.’

During her interview with the publication, Twiggy also discussed her upcoming West End Show, Close Up: The Twiggy Musical.

‘I only get involved with projects that really spark something in me, with people I love and want to work with,’ she said.

‘Ben Elton is an old friend and I love him to bits. He’s a huge talent – so clever and such a sweet man.

‘The musical came about when we were having dinner about six years ago and he said, half-jokingly, ”I should do your story! It’s an amazing story set in an amazing period – I should write it.”’

‘I’ve spent my life doing things that I didn’t plan to do. I didn’t plan to model. I definitely didn’t plan to do a musical film with Ken Russell.

‘And I certainly didn’t plan to star on Broadway in a big musical. I must be mad!’

How about this for a comeback? Twiggy is returning to pop music, 48 years after her self-titled debut album was released.

I can disclose that the celebrated former model, 74, who is now Dame Lesley Lawson, has teamed up with former Rolling Stones bass guitarist Bill Wyman, 87.

Featuring piano, bass, guitar and her vocals, their album is inspired by traditional music from the 1930s to 1950s.

‘We have not announced it yet, but I have been working with Bill Wyman,’ she confirms.

‘Covid came along and we had to Skype for about two or three years. Bill kept sending me songs from that period, and I love that.

‘My first film, The Boy Friend, was all 1920s music. Bill narrowed it down and I kept picking music from [American musicians] Mary Ford and Les Paul.’

Speaking on her podcast, Tea With Twiggy, she adds of her musical adventure: ‘It is scary and exciting. Hopefully the album will come out soon.’

Twiggy, an icon of the Swinging Sixties, appeared on the sleeve of the 1973 David Bowie album Pin Ups. ‘I just feel thrilled that I got to meet Bowie,’ she has said.

‘That photo was early 1970s and he was huge at that point. English Vogue had this idea of putting me and him on the cover of Vogue and we thought it was a brilliant idea.

‘He was recording in Paris and I flew there, and we did the picture. The editor of Vogue, in their great wisdom, said, ‘I can’t put a man on the cover.’

‘We said, ‘Why not? You are insane.’ But they would not budge. So David said, ‘While they are faffing about, I will put it on the album cover.’ ‘
