BAFTA have announced the full list of TV award nominations ahead of the prestigious ceremony which will take place next month.

Netflix phenomenon Baby Reindeer led the pack with an incredible eight nominations after it proved a global success following its release last year.

Richard Gadd who wrote and starred in the series about his own experiences of being stalked is up for Leading Actor, while his co-star Jessica Gunning is in the running for the Supporting Actress award.

In the Limited Drama category, Baby Reindeer will face ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which was based on one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history, where hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office received a total of six nominations, while Disney series Rivals and Apple TV’s Slow Horses also had the same amount of nods.

A total of 21 out of 44 nominees in the performance categories have received their first BAFTA Television Awards nomination.

Baby Reindeer’s Jessica Gunning reveals shock over beating Jodie Foster and Cate Blanchett at 2025 SAG Awards

Jessica Gunning couldn’t contain her excitement as she took home her first Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award on Sunday night.

The 38-year-old actress picked up the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series accolade for her portrayal of Martha in the critically acclaimed Netflix series Baby Reindeer.

She began her acceptance speech by sweetly paying tribute to her fellow nominees, Kathy Bates (The Great Lillian Hall), Cate Blanchett (Disclaimer), Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country), Lily Gladstone (Under The Bridge), and Cristin Milioti (The Penguin).

‘Wow, thank you so much. Wow. I feel like such a lucky bunny to even be in this room, let alone be nominated or up here, honestly,’ she told the audience.

She continued: ‘When I first started acting, I had an office job alongside acting for about eight years. It’s a very geeky thing to admit but in the mornings I used to go into work and look at a PowerPoint presentation, it was like a positive thinking vision board of all the things that I wanted to do and the people I wanted to meet or work with.’

Gunning proceeded to reveal that Blanchett, Foster, and Bates ‘were on that vision board,’ which made being ‘listed amongst them today’ even more surreal.

The star also went to give shout-outs to Gladstone and Milioti, who she said ‘gave performances that absolutely knocked’ her ‘socks off’ before explaining how much it meant to her to be nominated alongside such a talented group of women.

Gunning went on to pay tribute to those who had worked with her on Baby Reindeer, including creator and co-star Richard Gadd.

‘Thank you to everybody involved in Baby Reindeer for changing my life, thank you to Richard Gadd for making my dreams come true, I will never ever forget Baby Reindeer or playing the part of Martha,’ she raved. ‘Thank you to my team and my family back home, I love you and cannot wait to celebrate with you.’

She concluded her speech by saying: ‘Honestly, genuinely, this means the world to me so thank you so much.’

Jessica made a splash for herself last year in Baby Reindeer, which became a runaway sensation upon its debut in Netflix and won six Emmys.

When she won this Saturday at the Independent Spirit Awards, she remarked from the stage that the rapturous response to the show felt like a ‘crazy dream.’

She noted that she had worked in the UK for 17 years before becoming a name in America thanks to her performance as Martha in Baby Reindeer.

During her speech, she thanked her co-star Richard Gadd, who also created the series, based on his one-man show about his life.

‘I would wait another 17 years if I had to to play Martha again,’ said Jessica. ‘I’ll never forget her, or you, or any of this time. I’ve loved every second of it, and I’m incredibly proud that you chose me to be your Martha.’

Baby Reindeer had a banner night at the Independent Spirit Awards, where Jessica’s co-stars Richard Gadd and Nava Mau were also honored for their performances.

A UK law graduate called Fiona Harvey has claimed to be the basis for Martha and is currently suing Netflix for $120 million in defamation over the character’s portrayal.

Following the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, she told DailyMail.com that Kathy Bates was one of her role models and that she ‘love to work with’ her someday.

‘I have had the honor of having chance to meet Kathy a few times now, at the Golden Globes. She’s also one of my absolute idols,’ the West Yorkshire-born actress said. ‘I’ve admired her for very long time, so if ever I cross paths to work with her would be great.’

Demi Moore cemented her comeback status when she won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, while Timothée Chalamet shocked awards prognosticators when he won the Male Actor in a Leading Role award for his Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.

Demi beat out Pamela Anderson, who was hoping for her own comeback win for Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl, after earning her first-ever SAG nomination.

Conclave also continued its awards-season success by winning the final honor of the night for Cast in a Motion Picture for the papal-selection drama Conclave.

The annual ceremony, which was hosted by Nobody Wants This star Kristen Bell, was streamed live on Netflix for the second year in a row.

It was presented by the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and bills itself as the ‘only televised awards ceremony to exclusively honor actors.’

During the hours-long ceremony, 13 awards were handed for ‘outstanding performances’ in both film and TV that were decided on by SAG-AFTRA’s 130,000+ members.

The musical blockbuster Wicked — based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical — led the nominations for SAG’s top film honors with five nods, but the film and its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were completely shut out

According to the official website, the SAG Awards have ‘the largest voting body on the awards circuit.’

Unlike prior years, the official SAG Awards nomination ceremony was canceled for 2025 in wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires that broke out in January.

Instead, SAG-AFTRA shared the nominations online.

The musical blockbuster Wicked — based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical — led the nominations for SAG’s top film honors with five nods, but the film and its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were completely shut out.

Ariana kept a brave face as the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role went to Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Pérez.

That film’s awards-season hopes cratered after racist and Islamophobic tweets — with some quite recent — from its star Karla Sofía Gascón were discovered, but Zoe managed to triumph anyway.

Selena Gomez wasn’t nominated for the film individually and missed out on its ensemble nomination after Conclave’s win, but she still got a boost when she accepted the best comedy ensemble award for Only Murders In The Building, which had a surprise win over competitors The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Hacks and Shrinking.

Anora had high hopes ahead of the SAG Awards, but it also went home empty-handed despite a string of wins in recent weeks that boosted its odds for the upcoming Academy Awards.

Baby Reindeer star Richard Gadd reveals A-list star he’d love to work with after Independent Spirit Awards win

Richard Gadd is already thinking about his next big collaboration after his series Baby Reindeer swept the individual acting honors at the 2025 Independent Spirits Awards on Saturday.

The 35-year-old creator and star of the hit series spoke with DailyMail.com about a surprise star he’s interested in working with after he won the award for the gender-neutral best lead performance in a new scripted series at the ceremony.

The ceremony, which was held in Santa Monica, California, and hosted by former SNL star Aidy Bryant, featured major wins in the film categories for Oscar-hopeful Anora, while Shōgun managed to beat out Baby Reindeer for the best new scripted series award.

Although he seemingly has a bevy of British and American stars looking to work with him, Gadd sounded excited about the possibility of teaming up with a major wrestler-turned-film star: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

‘I love The Rock. I’m waiting for his call currently,’ Gadd joked when asked if he’d consider working with the Jumanji star.

‘No, he hasn’t been in touch,’ Gadd clarified, but he wouldn’t mind a call, as he is a ‘big wrestling fan.’

Baby Reindeer star Richard Gadd reveals A-list star he’d love to work with after Independent Spirit Awards win

Richard Gadd, 35, opened up to DailyMail.com about the A-list star he’d love to work with while chatting shortly after winning the gender-neutral best lead performance in a new scripted series at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday in Santa Monica

Even though that fact seems to surprise people, he admitted that one of his dreams would be a ‘road trip with me, The Rock, John Cena, and let’s just say Bret Hart.’

‘I don’t know what we’ll talk about, but we’ll do it,’ he continued. ‘They’ll be talking and I’ll just be there… ‘

Richard created, wrote and plays the lead role in Baby Reindeer, his hit dark dramedy thriller that was adapted from his autobiographical one-man show.

In the series, he plays a version of himself named Donny Dunn who works as a bartender and moonlights as an aspiring comedian.

One of his pub customer’s, Martha (fellow Indie Spirit winner Jessica Gunning), develops an unhealthy obsession with him that escalates to stalking.

The series also delves into his conflicted feelings about his relationship with his girlfriend Teri, a transgender American therapist (played by Nava Mau, who won the best supporting performance honor at the Independent Spirit Awards), and an abusive collaboration with a TV writer who takes him under his wing.

The series, which was released on Netflix, has been a hit with critics and fans alike.

Richard went on to share his advice to other stars who may be dealing with stalkers, including Piers Morgan, who recently revealed he was dealing with a situation that seemed to be straight out of the hit series.

He urged anyone tormented by similar circumstances to ‘keep going’ and to not let it get in their way.

‘I think there’s times in my life where I felt like the pressure was so intolerable,’ he admitted. ‘I almost didn’t think there would be any sort of way out, but I think it’s almost cliché, the sort of time-is-the-greatest-healer type of thing, but it really is.

‘Every now and again in the darkness, there will be a crack of light, and then as the days go by, those cracks get bigger and ultimately suddenly you’re standing in sunlight,’ Richard continued.

‘It is strange, but I never thought it would end, but I think just the belief that one day it will was enough for me,’ he said on a hopeful note. ‘I think, no, nothing bad sustains forever. I do believe that, and I think that the simple two words would be, “Keep going…”‘

Gadd also weighed in on his Baby Reindeer followup, the upcoming HBO–BBC drama Half Man, which he created and will costar in with Jamie Bell.

The multi-hyphenate revealed he wants the new series to be a departure from the intensely personal and autobiographical Baby Reindeer.

After first joking that his next project would be a ‘musical,’ Richard called Half Man a ‘departure from the kind of autobiographical, semi-biographical stuff that I’ve done before, but it’s still dark.

‘It still explores the contradictions of the human condition, but it feels nice not to be turning in it all the time while I’m doing it,’ he explained. ‘So this one I wouldn’t say is a full departure.

However, he suggested it was ‘still probably totally what you’d expect from me,’ though its ‘subject matter’ might surprise Baby Reindeer fans.

He added that he hoped that working on something that wasn’t based on his own life would ‘be a healthy thing to do.’

His upcoming series charts 40 tumultuous years in the lives of brothers who are now estranged.

The action begins in the present, when Gadd’s character Ruben crashes Bell’s character Niall’s wedding, setting of an exploration of their traumatic relationship from decades earlier.

Gadd emerged triumphant at the Indie Spirit Awards on Saturday, winning best lead performance in a new scripted series, while Jessica Gunning won best breakthrough performance and Nava Mau won best supporting performance.

The Baby Reindeer creator said he wrote a speech for the night but joked that Anora filmmaker Sean Baker had stolen it with his soaring acceptance speech for best director.

He also joked that he didn’t think his chances were very good after The Penguin came on the scene and started snatching up awards at earlier shows.

Although that show’s second lead Cristin Milioti was nominated in the same category as Richard, its star Colin Farrell wasn’t nominated this time around.

Baby Reindeer star Nava Mau says the award winning Netflix show ‘healed her own wounds’ after devastating pre-transition anorexia battle fuelled by ‘self-hatred’ forced her into rehab

Baby Reindeer star Nava Mau has opened up on how acting in the hit Netflix show helped to ‘heal her own wounds’ in a candid new interview.

The actress, 32, shot to stardom when she starred as Teri in the series – an American therapist who meets lead character Donny (Richard Gadd) on a dating app.

Now, as Cosmopolitan’s latest cover star, Nava discussed ‘the shame society creates around transgender relationships’ and how she knew Richard’s real-life relationship with a trans woman was genuine love.

She recalled: ‘It was undeniable. It makes me emotional still. I just remember there was a moment reading the script for the first time, and I was like, ‘Oh, he really loved her.’

‘Donny’s love for Teri is in the form of awe, and I had never seen a trans woman represented quite in that way.

‘It was this weird, transcendental experience of it being what I needed to see, and what it did to heal my own wounds.’

The star continued: ‘There is such a fixation in society and in the media on trans people and who is dating us, and who is attracted to us, and who is even consorting with us.

‘It’s strange, because that fixation presupposes that trans people should be responsible for explaining and answering any questions and curiosities that cis people have, but it also presupposes that trans people must also have this fixation.

‘But it’s like, I’m not a curiosity to myself. We’re just living full lives, real lives, just like everyone else.’

For the cover shoot, Nava looked nothing short of incredible in a series of leggy outfits, including a black bodysuit complete with a stylish oversized leather jacket.

She further showcased her sensational figure as she slipped into a denim vest top and a racy maxi skirt, which featured a large cut out along the side.

Other ensembles included a zebra-print trench coat, a busty white mini dress, and a blue denim jacket.

Nava wore her brunette locks in loose waves and opted for a glowing palette of makeup.

Reflecting on her younger years as a transgender woman, Nava admitted that trying to enter the workforce as a trans person can be ‘soul crushing,’ and lead her to ‘crumble’.

She revealed that her struggle with being accepted by society led to anorexia and how, at 19, a rehab programme saved her life.

The actress explained: ‘I’d been struggling with anorexia for several years at that point, because I think so much of my trying to force myself to be accepted by society was turned into a hate for my body and wanting to control it, and so I had to withdraw from school…

‘It [rehab] saved my life. Anorexia is the deadliest mental health disorder, and I learned, in a way that I can never unlearn, how to truly love myself, and how to practise acceptance and mindfulness.

‘It built a foundation of self-love and trust in myself that I think allowed my intuition to blossom.’

She added: ‘I think that more than anything, it was that I hadn’t transitioned. It was the most all-consuming effort that I was making to try to fit myself into a world that was not built for me.’

When she finally got her big break on Baby Reindeer, a doctor had to inform her she had an elevated heart rate due to the shock of the show’s incredible success.

‘We realised that I was in literal, physical shock, because it was undeniable that my life had changed,’ she revealed.

Lifting the lid on where society is today with transgender representation on TV, Nava spoke of how there is still room for improvement.

She told the publication: ‘I think there are some people who have this imagined belief that there’s a trans takeover.

               WHAT IS ANOREXIA?

Anorexia is a serious mental illness where a person restricts their food intake, which often causes them to be severely underweight.

    Many also exercise excessively.

Some sufferers may experience periods of bingeing, followed by purging.

Sufferers often have a distorted view of themselves and think they are larger than they really are.

Untreated, patients can suffer loss of muscle and bone strength, as well as depression, low libido and menstruation ceasing in women.

In severe cases, patients can experience heart problems and organ damage.

Behavioural signs of anorexia include people saying they have already eaten or will do later, as well as counting calories, missing meals, hiding food and eating slowly.

As well as weight loss, sufferers may experience insomnia, constipation, bloating, feeling cold, hair loss, and swelling of the hands, face and feet.

Treatment focuses on therapy and self-help groups to encourage healthy eating and coping mechanisms.

‘And it’s like, we’re such a small population – a tiny fraction of the world’s population – and we’re barely getting to make headway into the kinds of roles that are available to us.

‘Trans people should be considered and invited to be a part of projects that do not revolve around a trans narrative, and that’s because trans people are so much more than our gender identity.

‘It’s a matter of seeing trans people as human, and valuing us for our humanity, and not as a token simply because we are trans.’

Richard Gadd, who both wrote and starred in the show, told The Independent, that Donny’s relationship arc with Teri drew on his own experiences of a relationship with an unnamed trans woman.

‘It’s in the public consciousness now, but it wasn’t back then, when I was dating,’ he explained.

‘It felt so new that it added a certain pressure, to me, that I really regret now. But that’s what it explores in the show. This story was set back in a time when things were very different.’

Reflected in the series, Richard added that feelings of shame around his sexuality kept him from telling the truth about his name and occupation from her.

However, he has also said that his girlfriend became ‘the voice of reason in my life at that point’ although he never ‘listened to her as much as I should have’.

Picking up the award for Limited Series, an emotional Gadd said: ‘Thank you. Wow. This is insane, seeing all you people here. That’s mad. The Rock is there. This is crazy. I can’t believe it, honestly. I grew up on you, man. This is nuts. Honestly, the way you guys have embraced this show is unbelievable.

‘It means the absolute world to me, to us. We are so grateful to Netflix, by the way, for this story, give me the chance to tell this messed up kind of story. Thank you to our amazing cast. Thank you to our directors, Veronica, Josephine. Thank you to our producer, Matthew, and all the amazing people who worked on the show. A lot of people sometimes ask me why Baby Reindeer, a show this dark, has gone on to be to success it has.

‘I think in a lot of ways people were crying out for something that spoke to the kind of painful inconsistencies of being human. For a while now there has been this belief in television that stories that are too dark and complicated on sell and no one will watch them, so I hope that Baby Reindeer has done away with that theory, because right now, when the world is in the state it’s in, and people are really struggling, we need stories that speak to the complicated and difficult nature of our times.

‘Any story, when done right, is universal, and all the weird struggles we go through on a daily basis are just as worthy of being committed to screen as any. So streamers, when you are putting together the numbers and budgets for this year, remember to keep some back for the little person to tell their story. Thank you so much.’

Baby Reindeer was based on Gadd’s one-man autobiographical show, following Gadd’s character Donny Dunn, a London bartender and aspiring comedian.

The series follows Donny as he meets the downtrodden Martha (Gunning), who begins stalking him in person and online.

The show was critically acclaimed but not without controversy, when a woman named Fiona Muir-Harvey claimed to be the woman Gadd based Martha on.

She filed a $170 million lawsuit against Netflix, which a judge dismissed though allowed the defamation portion of the lawsuit to continue.

Demi Moore and Mikey Madison posed together as they led the stars at the 2025 Spirit Awards Nominees Brunch in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Mikey, 25, looked ethereal in an elegant, all-black ensemble while attending the star-studded gathering at the Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica.

The actress — who put on a sultry display in lingerie on the cover of W Magazine’s latest issue alongside blonde bombshell Pamela Anderson and a shirtless Andrew Garfield — was a vision in a black, midi dress with short sleeves and floral-patterned, velvet embroidery.

Her stunning garb featured a sexy yet modest boat neckline, and she paired the understated, elegant dress with black pumps.

At the event, she was joined by the exquisite Danielle Deadwyler, who turned heads in an eye-catching, orange dress, and the charming Sebastian Stan, who dressed to impress in a sharp, gray suit.

On the red carpet, the actress also posed with her Anora director Sean Baker and her co-stars as they all reunited to celebrate the success of their romantic drama film, which premiered in October 2024.

At the event, they posted for photos alongside Karren Karagulian, Mark Eydelshteyn, Samantha Quan as well as Yura Borisov and Alex Coco.

Demi, who earned plaudits last year for her body horror movie The Substance co-starring Margaret Qualley, was the image of showbiz glamour at the fete.

She opted for a touch of nautical chic in a navy dress that featured a white collar and a matching set of white trim at the sleeve ends.

Her short sleeved ensemble featured raised shoulders and was perfectly fitted to emphasize her enviably willowy figure for the red carpet.

Bringing out her luminous complexion with makeup, she wore her dark hair down in silken curtains and brought the look together with a black purse and shoes.

While making her way around the event, Demi was spotted mingling with Richard Gadd, the creator and star of the Netflix sensation Baby Reindeer.

The About Last Night… actress could also be seen enjoying a chat with Chicago Med actor Brian Tee and his wife Mirelly Taylor.

Other stars in attendance at the brunch were Ryan Destiny, Katia Washington and Olivia Washington.

Baby Reindeer’s Nava Mau puts on a sizzling display in a black embellished sheer dress as she joins Richard Gadd at Fashion Awards afterparty

Baby Reindeer’s Nava Mau turned heads as she and Richard Gadd arrived at the Fashion Awards afterparty in London on Monday.

The transgender actress, 32, who plays Teri in Baby Reindeer, an American therapist who meets lead character Donny [Gadd] meets on a dating app, looked nothing short of sensational in a black embellished sheer dress as she strutted into the Chiltern Firehouse.

The stylish ensemble boasted a lace V-neckline, a sequin embellishment at the bust, a sheer black skirt with a sequin butterfly design, and a long train.

Nava added inches to her frame wearing a pair of black stiletto heels and further accessorised with silver statement earrings.

To complete her look, Nava styled her dark tresses up in an elegant updo and beamed for the cameras as she entered the venue.

Meanwhile, Baby Reindeer creator Richard, 35, who won three Primetime Emmy Awards for writing, producing, and acting in the series, cut a smart figure in a beige trench coat.

He teamed the stylish coat with a smart black button-up shirt from Loewe and tailored trousers as he strolled into the event.

It comes after Baby Reindeer’s real-life Martha was given the green light to ‘sue Netflix for libel’ after a judge gave a key ruling.

A judicial order obtained by PEOPLE determined that Richard’s hit TV show could be portrayed as a ‘true story’, meaning Fiona Harvey could launch a defamation lawsuit against the streaming service.

The court disagreed with Netflix that they had created a fictional story as many of the details of the series were factual, along with a text that starts the show which reads: ‘This is a true story.’

Fiona, who says the lead character Martha’s life is based on her own, has denied key parts of the show are true, including going to prison or court.

She asserts that she never stalked Richard, did not sexually assault him, nor was she ever convicted of stalking.

Judge Gary Klausner said in his order that ‘there is a major difference between stalking and being convicted of stalking in a court of law,’ ‘inappropriate touching and sexual assault’ and ‘shoving and gouging,’ when comparing the experiences Richard had with Fiona and that of the one seen on screen with Martha, according to PEOPLE.

It was previously revealed exclusively in the Mail that the show’s writer, Richard, who plays himself and based the premise on his own experiences, told makers Clerkenwell Films that his stalker was never convicted.

Meanwhile, Baby Reindeer creator Richard, 35, who won three Primetime Emmy Awards for writing and acting in the series, cut a smart figure in a black button-up shirt from Loewe

Sources indicate that Richard told Clerkenwell that the stalker was the subject of an ‘exclusion order’ – a civil order and not the same as a criminal conviction of stalking.

This means that the show was always a fictionalised dramatisation – though it went out under a banner which read ‘this is a true story’.

The comedian did admit that some parts of the story were changed ‘slightly to create dramatic climaxes.’

It’s not clear how Clerkenwell Films described the situation to Netflix, or what compliance procedures were undertaken.

He added: ‘It’s very emotionally true, obviously: I was severely stalked and severely abused. But we wanted it to exist in the sphere of art, as well as protect the people it’s based on.’

Netflix had asked for the lawsuit to be thrown out in July on the basis that ‘a reasonable person would not understand the statements [regarding Harvey] to be assertions of fact.’

However, the judge disagreed saying: ‘The very first episode states unequivocally that ‘this is a true story,’ thereby inviting the audience to accept the statements as fact.’

Fiona had filed the lawsuit on June 6 and had asked for over $170 million in damages, as she claimed that she faced a lot of harassment after the show was aired.

As a result, Fiona claimed she planned to sue the show for defamation, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and violations of right of publicity, among other charges.

Why real-life Baby Reindeer stalker is convinced she’ll win £95m in bombshell lawsuit… as lawyer reveals Richard Gadd’s ‘nauseating’ actions and Netflix’s ‘risky game’

This coming Tuesday, Baby Reindeer star Richard Gadd will walk the red carpet outside London’s Tate Modern alongside a glittering host of celebrities before being honoured as one of GQ Magazine’s Men of the Year.

Actors Jude Law and Nicole Kidman will be among the stars dishing out the awards and Gadd is glowingly described by the publication as one of the ‘most inventive and consequential’ figures in culture who is ‘breaking the rules and changing the game’.

It looks certain to be another ‘pinch me’ moment for Gadd, who was an obscure, impoverished stand-up comedian until the Netflix show he wrote and starred in catapulted him to near-instant international stardom in April.

The scale of his success is staggering.

Some 65million viewers worldwide have watched Baby Reindeer, the seven-part series which is a dramatised account of the abuse and stalking suffered by Gadd in real life. It is one of the biggest shows ever to air on the streaming platform.

In September he won three Emmys: writing, acting and outstanding limited series. He said on stage then: ‘You have made a little boy from a tiny Scottish town’s dreams come true.’

And he’s widely expected to succeed again at the Golden Globes in January, with the support of an expensive Netflix publicity campaign.

Last month Netflix also announced it has secured his services as a writer in a ‘first look’ exclusive contract to develop ideas and scripts and take them into production.

Fiona Harvey claims she has been defamed 'at a magnitude and scale without precedent' and her life has been ruined as a result

Fiona Harvey claims she has been defamed ‘at a magnitude and scale without precedent’ and her life has been ruined as a result

As Baby Reindeer’s many, many fans will be aware, in the series he is called Donny Dunn and his stalker is known as Martha Scott.

We now know, of course, that Martha is based on law graduate Fiona Harvey – and she is suing Netflix for $120million (nearly £1million) in damages over her depiction in the show.

She claims she has been defamed ‘at a magnitude and scale without precedent’ and her life has been ruined as a result.

In a recent interview with GQ, Gadd said he couldn’t talk about the legal action but that he felt ‘windswept’ by his experience of sudden fame.

‘I almost don’t know. I just feel knocked off my feet,’ he said.

He went on to complain that the publicity frenzy surrounding Baby Reindeer had been disturbing for him.

‘I couldn’t escape from it,’ he said. ‘Turn on the TV, there’d be something on the TV. Turn on the radio, they’d be talking about it. I’d go to Sainsbury’s – I’d be in the newspapers.’

He says that he even had to send his parents on an extended holiday so they could get away from journalists.

As you might expect, these complaints are considerably enraging for Fiona Harvey who says she is too traumatised to leave her flat in London as a result of being traduced, globally – and they are a red rag to her lawyers.

In the US it’s common procedure for a mediator to be appointed in disputes such as this, in the hope that the parties can come to an agreement before the time and expense of a court hearing.

In this case a mediator was appointed last month, leading many observers to wonder if the off-screen drama around Baby Reindeer was finally nearing an end.

However, the Mail can reveal that Harvey’s lawyers have declined to enter mediation with Netflix; instead they are confident they will go all the way to court and win big.

And they have plenty to say about former barman Gadd and what they feel is his pity party.

Richard Roth, the New York lawyer representing Harvey, says: ‘He’s complaining about the fame from winning the Emmys and being a famous producer? He’s complaining that he’s making money and he’s famous? What a poor guy. Give me a break! It’s like Beyonce complaining she’s famous.

‘Look at the difference with Fiona. She got death threats.’

Roth adds: ‘There’s one person who made money other than Netflix and that’s Richard Gadd. One entity. He’s accepting Emmy awards in front of hundreds of Hollywood people. He’s got a new lucrative deal and he’s a victim? I have to say that’s nonsense.

‘He brought this on himself. It was not something that was thrust upon him like what happened with Fiona.

‘Imagine while Richard Gadd is writing the play in 2017, isn’t this what he was always wishing for? Every producer – isn’t this their dream? Don’t they want to write a play to become famous? To me I’d call bull**** on that. Everyone who wrote a play who acted in a play that’s all they want.’

As for the forthcoming GQ award, it seems to set a seal on the outrage. Roth comments: ‘It’s nauseating. For him to be one of the Men of the Year, it’s grotesque. He is Man of the Year and she sits in her home worried to go outside. She’s been so victimised.’

Richard Roth, the New York lawyer representing Harvey, says: ‘He’s complaining about the fame from winning the Emmys and being a famous producer?…what a poor guy’

In legal papers, Harvey has said: ‘I am afraid to go outside out of fear of being attacked. Some weeks I do not leave my apartment. I am suffering from, among other things, constant panic attacks, chest pains, anxiety, nightmares, depression, nervousness, stomach pains, loss of appetite, fear and insomnia.’

At the heart of the dispute over Baby Reindeer is an on-screen announcement at the start that describes it as a ‘true story’ – rather than ‘based on’ a true story or the like.

Harvey – whose identity was quickly uncovered by viewers of the show who combed Gadd’s social media accounts – says that the dramatised version didn’t do enough to disguise her identity and also differed in a number of crucial and damaging ways from the truth.

For example, the Netflix show ends with Martha, a convicted stalker following a previous campaign against a lawyer, pleading guilty to stalking Donny and receiving a sentence of four and a half years in prison.

Harvey has never been convicted of any crime, let alone gone to prison for it. Her clear DBS check is included in a recent evidence bundle.

Additionally, her lawyers argue that in the stage play upon which the series was based, also called Baby Reindeer, which was performed at the Edinburgh fringe, Martha is not arrested or convicted of a crime, nor does she go to prison.

Instead, in the play Donny is told to ‘apologise’ to Martha and stop ‘bothering’ the police. It ends with him obtaining a restraining order against her.

Her team say that comparisons between the play and TV series prove that Netflix knew all along that Harvey had never been convicted of stalking once, nevermind twice.

For his part, Gadd says in legal papers that Harvey was issued with a First Instance Harassment Warning letter in 2016.

After months of further abuse, including Harvey allegedly telling Gadd, ‘If I want you dead, you are f****** dead’, Gadd says that she was issued with another First Instance Harassment Warning letter in 2017. He includes his correspondence with police as proof.

Netflix has argued the show should be viewed as ‘substantially true’ because Harvey did arguably similar things in real life, but that argument failed in court.

In a ruling in September, District judge Gary Klaus concluded that the show was not a ‘true story’ and that Netflix ‘made no effort to investigate’ the accuracy of the facts presented in the show, nor did they take measures to hide Harvey’s identity.

The judge said that her ‘purported actions (in stalking Gadd) are reprehensible’ but that the version presented in Baby Reindeer was worse.

His ruling said: ‘There is a major difference between stalking and being convicted of stalking in a court of law.’

He also said there were major differences between inappropriate touching (what’s alleged to have happened in real life) and sexual assault (the TV version), as well as between shoving (real life) and gouging another’s eyes (the TV version).

‘While the plaintiff’s purported actions are reprehensible, defendants’ statements are of a worse degree and could produce a different effect in the mind of a viewer,’ he wrote.

Netflix also argued that most viewers would understand the claims made in the show to be ‘not factual; because it was shot in the style of a drama’.

However, the judge disagreed, writing: ‘While the statements were made in a series that largely has the trappings of a black comedy-drama, the very first episode states unequivocally that “this is a true story”, thereby inviting the audience to accept the statements as fact.’

Netflix also said the similarities between the real and fictionalised people were so broad that average viewers would not have been able to identify Ms Harvey as Martha. The judge again disagreed saying that Ms Harvey and Martha shared ‘specific similarities’ that few others could claim to share.

Netflix is appealing that ruling. Both sides were due to come to mediation over the appeal this week. However Roth explains: ‘We were released from mediation because this case is not ready to be mediated. We are very confident in our position and we’re not going to settle it.

‘The person from the mediation office wanted to know if we were willing to settle and we said “no.”‘

He went on: ‘Mediation is dead but if Jesus came up from the dead you never know. I never say never – but right now there’s very little chance it’s going to settle. Courts, especially in the US, are always pushing to have you settle. I can’t say that the case will never settle but it’s looking unlikely.’

Instead, it seems that Netflix will be running a Golden Globe campaign under the shadow of this legal action. A spokesman for the streamer declined to comment. All Netflix has ever said outside of legal documents is that they will support Gadd’s right to tell his true story of being stalked.

Roth comments: ‘Netflix is playing a very, very risky game by continuing. This isn’t just being looked at by reporters, it’s being looked at by the industry, entertainment people, lawyers, people who are producers are looking at this, TV executives….

‘It’s not smart to keep it going.’

The comedian did admit that some part of the story where changed ‘slightly to create dramatic climaxes.’

Harvey had filed the lawsuit on June 6 and had asked for over $170 million in damages, as she claimed that she faced a lot of harassment after the show was aired.

As a result, Harvey claimed she planned to sue the show for defamation, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and violations of right of publicity, among other charges.

Also in attendance was Wallis Day who turned heads in a bright red blouse which she wore with a black pencil skirt.

The actress showed off her toned pins in dark tights and added height to her frame with black heels.

The Crown star Ed McVey opted for a black jacket with a shearling collar which he paired with matching trousers and a white T-shirt.

It comes after Jameela revealed her ‘body is broken forever’ by societal beauty standards as she was named Glamour’s Game Changing Voice Of The Year.

Jameela last won an award at the ceremony in 2013, when she was named Radio Personality of the Year, and reminisced about how it was an exciting time for women in terms of body positivity.

However she expressed her sadness at the return of ‘heroin chic’ as she gave an impassioned speech on how women are once again ‘suffering and risking our lives’ in the pursuit of the ‘same Snapchat face’.

Urging women and girls to be kinder to themselves, she said: ‘I beg of you, as I stand here with a body broken forever because of what I put it through for our society’s beauty standards… to not sell your old lady self short.’

Jameela began her speech by speaking about the optimism of the 2010s, before sharing her concern that there had been a back track.

The Good Place star said: ‘Boys are encouraged to build their bodies, and build their futures and legacies.

‘While women and girls are starving, injecting and hurting – and sometimes literally dying – for the fastest possible route to the ever-changing, fickle beauty standard.’

‘Why is women’s discomfort and harm still so hyper normalised?’ the actress asked.

Jameela went on to issue a plea to all women and girls not to bow to misogyny and instead make decision that strengthen – not hurt – them.

In her powerful speech Jameela said: ‘The patriarchy seeks to distract, destroy and erase [women] by the time we get older because we become harder to control. Because we become too valuable.

‘And we must not find out, otherwise we might start spending more of our energy on things that could even the playing field in this world.’

Continuing with a smirk, she added: ‘We might start getting proper sleep. We might eat enough nutrients.

‘We might become too happy in ourselves and genuinely confident in who we are. Can you imagine what we could do?’

  • Baby Reindeer’s Nasty Turn: Graphic Messages, Explicit Gifts, and Terrifying Threats in 0m Court Case

Baby Reindeer’s Nasty Turn: Graphic Messages, Explicit Gifts, and Terrifying Threats in $120m Court Case

Only 84 people a night were able to squeeze into the tiny venue to see Richard Gadd’s Edinburgh Fringe play Baby Reindeer, which ran for nearly four weeks in 2019.

But that low-key play – the basis of the smash-hit television show Baby Reindeer – could end up costing the TV streaming service Netflix anything up to $120 million (£92 million), plus legal fees.

In June, lawyers acting for Fiona Harvey, the real-life inspiration for stalker Martha, launched a no-holds-barred legal assault on Netflix, demanding $170 million (£130 million), claiming she had been defamed ‘at a magnitude and scale without precedent’. She was also suing for, among other things, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and gross negligence.

While Netflix is fighting to have the case thrown out before it goes to trial next May, Ms Harvey seems to be in no mood for surrender. This week, her legal team filed yet another amended complaint, pointing out a number of hugely significant differences between the play and the TV show, which swept the board at the Emmys last month.

Baby Reindeer’s Nasty Turn: Graphic Messages, Explicit Gifts, and Terrifying Threats in 0m Court Case

The smash-hit television show Baby Reindeer – could end up costing the TV streaming service Netflix anything up to $120 million (£92 million), plus legal fees

According to court papers, the play, performed by Richard Gadd as his alter ego stand-up comedian Donny Dunn, never claimed to be ‘a true story’ as the TV show does, instead stating that it was ‘based on a true story’. Additionally, it is claimed the play contains no reference to any arrest, conviction, guilty plea or imprisonment for Martha.

This, Harvey’s team argues, is key because the Netflix show ends with Martha pleading guilty to stalking Donny. As she is a convicted stalker, because of a previous campaign against a lawyer, she is sentenced to four and a half years in prison for this second offence.

By contrast, in the Baby Reindeer play, she is never arrested, let alone convicted. Instead, Donny is told by police that Martha cannot be arrested as they don’t believe she has committed a crime, and he’s ordered to ‘apologise’ to her, stop ‘bothering’ the police and told: ‘I understand the frustration but heckling is not a crime.’

In the play, Gadd’s character tells the audience: ‘The last experience with the police was so burning, so embarrassing that I refuse to involve them again.’

It ends with him obtaining a restraining order against her.

Harvey’s team say discrepancies like these prove Netflix knew all along that she had never been convicted of stalking once, never mind twice.

According to legal papers filed by her team on Wednesday: ‘The omission of the entire arc and premise of the Series, a convicted stalker returns to prison after pleading guilty to stalking Gadd, from the Play… put Netflix on notice that details about Harvey’s criminal history in the Series were extremely likely to be false.’

Not that Harvey is the only one on the warpath. For I can reveal some of Richard Gadd’s alleged experiences at the hands of Fiona Harvey, which have been described in sworn statements filed into court in Los Angeles, make for jaw-dropping reading.

Allegations include that Harvey told Gadd that her clitoris had fallen off because of excessive masturbation, that she sent him her ‘lucky pants’ in the post after he had blocked her email, as well as invitations and demands for him to engage in sexual activity.

She also allegedly complained about her itchy pubic hair.

There were also allegedly racist tirades about immigrants and an observation that she was going to the ‘gun shop’ and that ‘if we got rid of [London mayor Sadiq] Khan everyone will sleep easy’.

Gadd also said that Harvey shoved him in the back of the neck after he confronted her about allegedly stalking a lawyer and told him that his ‘big mouth was going to get him into trouble’. In his statement, he complained of her repeated ‘handsy’ behaviour, with her touching his bottom while he waited tables in a pub in Camden, North London, where he worked as he attempted to make it as a comedian.

In the TV series, which also shows Donny working in a pub, this unwanted sexual contact is depicted as far graver – Martha sexually assaults Donny in an alleyway, something which her team say never happened in real life. In the TV series, she is seen attacking him with a glass and gouging his eyes, which Ms Harvey claims is defamatory and untrue.

For his part, Gadd says that she was issued with a First Instance Harassment Warning letter in 2016, which cited the Hawley Arms pub where ‘the victim’ worked. After months of further abuse, including Harvey allegedly telling Gadd: ‘If I want you dead, you are ****ing dead’, Gadd says that she was issued with another First Instance Harassment Warning letter in 2017. He includes his correspondence with police as proof. This is the first time that Netflix has revealed the precise details of her contact with police.

Fiona appeared in a YouTube interview with Piers Morgan in which she denied sending thousands of emails to Richard Gadd as depicted in the Netflix show

Fiona appeared in a YouTube interview with Piers Morgan in which she denied sending thousands of emails to Richard Gadd as depicted in the Netflix show

Previously, Netflix executive Benjamin King told the Commons select committee that the show was ‘a true story’ and that Gadd had been targeted by a ‘convicted stalker’.

He then ‘clarified’ his evidence in an email to the former committee chairwoman, Dame Caroline Dinenage in July, writing that ‘the person on whom the show is based’ was actually ‘subject to a court order rather than a conviction’.

In her amended complaint against Netflix, Harvey includes her clear DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check to prove that she has not been convicted of any crime. The incidents in the TV show not depicted in the play include a reference to Martha waiting outside Donny’s flat for 16 hours a day, including in the middle of the night.

There is also no reference in the play to Martha smashing a glass over his head, which she does in the TV series.

The complaint adds that in interviews he did to publicise the TV show, Gadd retreated from the position that it was a ‘true story’, which is the line Netflix used in publicity material and on screen. They note that he called it ‘pretty truthful’, ‘100 per cent emotionally true’ and ‘very emotionally true’. In a ruling last week in California, Judge R. Gary Klausner noted there were substantial disparities between what really happened and what was shown on screen.

He wrote: ‘There is a major difference between stalking and being convicted of stalking in a court of law.’ He added: ‘There are major differences between inappropriate touching and sexual assault, as well as between shoving and gouging another’s eyes.’

Judge Klausner did not agree with Netflix, which argued those things should be viewed as ‘substantially true’ because she did arguably similar things in real life.

Netflix also argued that most viewers would understand the claims made in the show to be ‘not factual’ because it was shot in the style of a drama. The judge disagreed, writing: ‘While the statements were made in a series that largely has the trappings of a black comedy-drama, the very first episode states unequivocally that ‘this is a true story’, thereby inviting the audience to accept the statements as fact.’

Netflix also said the similarities between the real and fictionalised people were so broad that average viewers would not have been able to identify Ms Harvey as Martha. The judge disagreed. Netflix is appealing the ruling.

The judge did side with Netflix in parts of Ms Harvey’s case, dismissing her negligence and gross negligence claims, and her request for punitive damages.

As both high-powered teams of lawyers prepare for the next round of hostilities, some observers think the time has probably come for Netflix to settle with Harvey.

This month a mediator, Gail Title, was assigned to the case. Netflix has to submit a mediation questionnaire to her by Tuesday next week. Could the off-screen drama be finally nearing a close?

The Emmy-winning star came out almost two years ago, in November 2022, after finally realising she was a ‘big old gay’.

She admitted it had taken years to make the realisation as  she hadn’t thought she could be gay, despite multiple signs ‘staring her in the face’, such as when kissing Cate Blanchett on stage every night during a production of When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other.

Jessica explained how it was like a secret she had kept from herself for many years, and gushed that finally coming out was ‘liberating’ and ‘special’.

Opening about coming out for the first time on the Reign podcast in June, she recalled: ‘I came out in November 2022. And that was a mega, mega thing for me because I for so long…

‘I am surrounded by gays, like all my friends are gay, so it wasn’t that I was repressing anything, it was just that I didn’t think that I could be.

‘I still can’t articulate it in the best way. But I realised I was a big, old gay. I was like, “That’s what it’s been, that’s what it is”. And that was like a massive moment where everything kind of clicked and I made sense of myself then.’

She continued:  ‘Because for so long I’d thought, “I know I’m a bigger woman”, and I thought that maybe it was to do with my size that I felt a bit like almost alien or like I was tagging along.

‘But as soon as I realised, I was like “No, it’s that”‘, and that was like the most liberating thing.’

She quipped:  ‘And again, looking at Take That going ‘S**t, who is fit in this picture?’ Again should have known. And I used to wear like dungarees, stereotypical I know, bum bag, wearing backwards ‘No Fear’ cap when I was a teenager.

‘So everyone around me probably was like “When is she going to come out?” And it took me 36 years.’

In 2014, Jessica starred in historical comedy-drama Pride, following the historical actions of the gay community to rid the country of stigma around sexuality.

Reflecting on the project, she said: ‘I should have even known when I did Pride because I would cry all the time. I found it so emotional I should have really known then.

‘And then I did a play with Cate Blanchett where I got to kiss her every night on stage. Again, I should have known then. All these signs from pre-Reindeer staring me in the face.’

Detailing how her life has been since coming out as gay, she said: ‘It’s been amazing, and very freeing and very grounding. I feel like really peaceful actually.

‘Naively I always used to think it would be just like a sexual thing. It’s not that in any way, you’re going “this is who I am”. And it’s actually really emotional.

‘Some of my straight friends have actually said they envy people being able to come out because it’s like a celebration of who you are.
