Debra Messing and Melanie Lynskey make eye-opening discoveries that they’re related to other stars

Debra Messing and Melanie Lynskey were shocked to discover they had famous — if distant — relatives on Tuesday’s episode of Finding Your Roots.

Debra, 56, learned that she was related to a famous American politician and former presidential candidate, while Melanie, 47, was ecstatic after finding out that she shared a small connection to an influential musician.

In fact, both distant cousins had previously appeared on the PBS series, the host, Henry Louis Gates Jr., revealed.

Toward the end of the episode, Debra was aghast to learn that she is related to Vermont’s independent United States senator, Bernie Sanders.

The 83-year-old politician, who is the longest serving independent in congressional history, previously ran for president in the 2016 and 2020 cycles while seeking the Democratic nomination.

‘What! Are you kidding me? Bernie Sanders?’ Debra reacted after learning that she shared some key portions of her DNA with the senator, via People. ‘No way! Oh my gosh… That is mind-blowing.’

Sanders has lately been on a national ‘Fight Oligarchy’ tour in which he visits districts that were only narrowly won by Republicans to urge their constituents to voice their outrage at proposed cuts to Medicaid and other public services.

He has also warned against the increasing influence of billionaires on government, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos.

Melanie sounded even more excited earlier in the episode when she learned that the Roots dummer Questlove was her distant cousin.

‘He’s your DNA cousin,’ Gates revealed, explaining that the record producer has about ’18 percent European’ DNA.

‘Your father and Questlove, as well as Questlove’s mother, share a long identical segment of DNA on your 15th chromosome,’ he continued.

‘I am very excited,’ the Yellowjackets star gushed after hearing the news, before asking Gates ‘how surprised’ he was by her results, which she said were ‘so amazing.’

Gates admitted that he ‘couldn’t believe it’ when he learned of her connection to Questlove (real name: Ahmir Thompson).

‘He’s such a sweet guy,’ Melanie said of the longtime Tonight Show drummer. ‘That’s incredible.’

The two may have even had a chance to commiserate about the discovery after the episode was filmed, as both attended the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.

Sanders appeared on Finding Your Roots back in 2017, when he learned that he and Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David are distant cousins, which delighted fans, as the comedian had been a guest on Saturday Night Live to play the comedian throughout the 2016 — and, later, 2020 — presidential elections.

Questlove appeared on the same season. He was shocked when Gates revealed that he is descended from the last-known group of enslaved people who were transported to the United States from Ghana, eventually landing near Mobile, Alabama.

The DNA testing indicated that his ancestors were part of a group of 100 slaves who were shipped on the schooner Clotilda (often misspelled as Clotilde) in 1860.

‘I’m not over-acting,’ an astounded Questlove said after hearing the news. ‘I’m at a loss for words.’

He said he was ‘overwhelmed’ because he never knew who he was, ‘I mean, until an hour ago.’

Finding Your Roots airs on Tuesdays on PBS at 8 p.m. ET.

Spike Lee and Katy Perry Support Kamala Harris for President

Spike Lee and Katy Perry are among the latest celebrities to throw support behind Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic party’s candidate for president.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker, 67, took to Instagram on Sunday after President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race to hail Harris, saying ‘once again a sista comes to the rescue’.

Singer-songwriter Perry, 39, also hailed her support for Harris by posting a short clip of herself signing the lyrics to her new song Woman’s World just hours after news broke that Biden had endorsed Harris to replace him.

‘It’s a woman’s world, and you’re lucky to be living in it,’ she sang in the Instagram video, which she captioned: ‘that’s it. that’s the caption.’

Both Lee and Perry publicly supported Biden during his bid for the White House four years ago. The film legend urged voters to ‘be on the right side of history’ when casting their ballots in the 2020 election and Perry hailed Biden’s decision to choose Harris as his running mate, branding her ‘exactly the kind of leader with experience we desperately need right now’.

The pair’s endorsement for Harris as the Democratic nominee comes after numerous A-listers including Cardi B, Jamie Lee Curtis, John Legend, Charli XCX, Cher, Barbra Streisand, Questlove and Demi Lovato issued messages of support to Biden and Harris after the President announced that he would not pursue the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month.

Lee publicly criticized Donald Trump and during his re-election campaign and urged voters to ‘be on the right side of history’ when casting their ballots.

As he accepted his Oscar for best adapted screenplay for BlacKkKlansman in February 2019, Lee in his speech called on people to mobilize in the election.

‘The 2020 presidential election is around the corner,’ he said at the time.

‘Let’s all mobilize. Let’s all be on the right side of history. Make the moral choice between love versus hate. Let’s do the right thing! You know I had to get that in there.’

Trump hit back at Lee, accusing the star of taking a ‘racist hit on your President’. He also argued he had ‘done more for African Americans than almost any other Pres!’

Perry has also been vocal about her opposition to Trump, having performed at the Democratic National Convention in 2016 and announced her support for then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

During the 2020 election, after Biden announced he had chose then-Senator Harris she praised his selection by posting several photos of herself with Harris.

‘I’ve had the privilege of getting to know @kamalaharris over the years and @joebiden choosing her as his running mate is already a testament to his decision making: Kamala is exactly the kind of leader WITH experience we desperately need right now,’ Perry wrote on Instagram in August 2020.

‘She’s the type of person willing to put in the WORK to make our country better. Less than 3 months until Election Day. LET’S DO THIS YA’LL.’

Following the election, Perry also sparked backlash online when she revealed that she reached out for family members who voted for Trump to tell them that although she did ‘not agree’ with their decision that ‘I love them and am here for them’.

Lee and Perry’s tributes to Harris on Sunday night follow a slew of online support from Hollywood A-listers.

President Biden’s historic decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race leaves Democrats scrambling to replace him with less than four months to go before Election Day.

What follows will be an unprecedented chain of events with Kamala Harris the clear favorite but by no means certain to become the party’s nominee.

The Democratic National Convention runs from August 19 to 22 in Chicago and Biden had been expected to formally accept the nomination there, having received 3,896 delegates during the party’s primary contest earlier this year.

More than 4,600 delegates and thousands of other party officials will now head to the city with the identity of the party’s standard bearer up in the air.

‘It was really taking a toll on me physically to digest that much food in a day,’ Lakshmi – who attended the Emmy Awards with her daughter Krishna – explained in the cover story for the April issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

‘I didn’t know what an amuse-bouche was, and for that reason I will always root for Top Chef,’ she added.

‘You can have it all, but you can’t have it all at once,’ she explained. ‘I didn’t have a lot of time for a social life. When was I going to find somebody I wanted to hang out with?’

The outlet also asked her about those romance rumors with poet Terrance Hayes, whom she’s been spotted with a few times.

‘That’s a “who knows?” area,’ she said cryptically. ‘Everything’s so open and free or nonexistent or new. What I’m saying is, I have nothing concrete to report!’

She also admitted to giving online dating a go and signed up for Raya in 2022, where she indicated she was interested in both men and women.

However, she found the app skewed ‘very white’ and the men simply exhausted her with their tales of bravery.

‘They’re always jumping out of a plane, skiing, lying on a yacht, or horseback riding, and then they’re brooding, and by the time I’m done scrolling, I’m tired of just looking at you,’ she said.

In the past, Padma has preferred to date older men, including her ex-husband Salman Rushdie, 76, who is 23 years older than she is and the late billionaire Theodore Forstmann, who was 30 years older.

‘I think when I was young, I was looking for a mentor and a mate perhaps or just felt lost,’ she said.

But she doesn’t think her preference for older man means she has daddy issues.

‘I’m my own daddy now. I sincerely mean that. It’s really hard to find a man who keeps your attention, regardless of age, and that’s what I’m looking for now.’

Now that Top Chef is behind her, the India-born, California-raised star is turning her formidable talents and business sense to the collection of intimates she’s creating in partnership with Bare Necessities.

‘A lot of the bras that a woman who’s much more delicately endowed wears don’t work for bigger-busted women, but we still want to be able to wear low-cut blouses and things like that,’ she explained.

‘You need to lift but also keep the b**bies separated. If you just use a push-up, you have a line of four inches of cleavage, and that makes you feel square. Nobody wants that,’ she shared.

'I didn't know what an amuse-bouche was, and for that reason I will always root for Top Chef,' she added, (l-r) Asma Khan, Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons

Lakshmi and Questlove, 53, are old friends and he’s been encouraging her to keep growing and creating.

‘We both entered this world of entertainment in our teens, and now we’re at a new place in our lives,’ he says.

‘Now we’re in our 50s and wondering, “Do you still have a voice inside you?’” After the pandemic, I realized that the answer is a resounding yes,’ The Roots member said.

‘We’ve had conversations where I might have to be that coach that shakes her by the shoulders, like Cher did to Nicolas Cage in Moonstruck. Like, “Stop it.” To make sure we are walking the path that we’re supposed to walk,’ he concluded.
