DIY SOS star shows off huge surgical scar as he gives a health update after having open-heart surgery

BBC star Mark Millar has showed off his surgical scar after having a triple heart by-pass as he gave a health update on Instagram on Sunday.

The DIY SOS star, 55, who underwent open heart surgery, revealed he is now feeling ‘amazing’ as he opened up about his gruelling recovery.

At the end of last year, Mark survived a heart attack while cold water swimming off Clevedon’s coast, in north Somerset and was rushed to Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI).

Now speaking out in a number of social media videos, Mark said he has been ‘struggling mentally’ but is recovering well.

He said: ‘I’ve been a bit quiet about my post op recovery but I’m doing well and healing well but I’ve struggled a bit mentally because I feel vulnerable.

‘I’ve been open from here to the top of my stomach so I get a bit worried about someone or me knocking it. I’m just about to have my first swim and I am very excited.’

Following the swim, Mark showed off his scar and said he feels ‘alive’ as he returned to light exercise.

He continued: ‘That was amazing, that was the first time I’ve been in the water since November, I’m seven weeks post op, I swam 10 lengths and I’m so high and this is amazing I am alive.’

However, Mark was forced to address that he had ‘jumped the gun’ and returned to swimming to early post-op and warned others not to do the same.

The TV star explained: ‘Yesterday I put a post up about me going for a swim seven weeks post op and I shouldn’t have done it.

‘I was slightly ticked off early from someone in the cardio unit but I should have waited until 12 weeks until the sternum is completely healed so I don’t damage or contract any infection.

‘So please don’t swim before 12 weeks, I’m sorry for doing that. I’m not sure what I’m going to do now for the next few weeks exercise, I guess more walking.’

Mark previously gave a health update three weeks post-op and said he had been out walking each day after previously being ‘exhausted’ and ‘tender’.

The TV builder said: ‘I feel amazing, I’m walking I’m averaging seven thousand steps a day, I feel fantastic I have my appetite back.

‘I was exhausted for about two weeks and a bit tender but I really am making my way back and thank you to the surgeons and doctors that helped me’.

Mark had a heart attack while open water swimming and previously said as soon as the pain started it felt ‘like a lifetime’ for him to swim back to the shore with help from his friends.

He told the BBC: ‘It felt like someone was tightening a belt around me. If it was not for my friends and my £15 float, I am not sure if I would be here today.

‘I was having red flags, everything was wrong’, he said. ‘The water felt like treacle, I felt absolutely dreadful.’

Mark has worked as a carpenter all over the UK, Europe and the US.

He is from Northern Ireland and was raised in Belfast in the midst of the Troubles.

Growing up, he had aspirations to train as a chef, but instead took up an apprenticeship as a carpenter.

After four years, he swapped Ireland for London before settling in Bristol.

It was here where he set up his own building firm, which has achieved huge success and boasts a number of celebrity clients.

Mark’s building work has taken him as far as New York.

Mark could have been on DIY SOS from the very beginning alongside Nick Knowles and his team but in 1999 when he was approached to present on the first series in front of the camera, he declined due to the amount of private client work he had booked.

Six years on, he was asked again if he would like to become Project Manager for the popular series, this time he jumped at the chance.

When it comes to his role on DIY SOS, Mark was the one who had to work out how to fit weeks of work into just nine days.

Nick appeared on the cover of the magazine last year along with his fellow Strictly stars.

He sadly had to pull out of the competition – where he was partnered with professional dancer Luba Mushtuk – due to injury.

At the event he cut a smart figure in a navy suit which he teamed with a purple tie as he posed with the framed Radio Times cover.

Katie – who accessorised her look with heels and a sleek bag – sweetly captioned the post: ‘Me and my love’

It comes after the stunner hit back at claims she’s a gold digger who is dating Nick for his money.

The lingerie brand boss began dating the TV star in 2021 after they met when their children became friends at a play centre.

Yet the pair have been subject to cruel trolling during their relationship, with critics mocking their age difference and financial setup.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, about the ‘gold digger’ jibes, Katie admitted they don’t get to her as much as they used to because she and Nick know its not true.

She said: ‘I think at the start, it was probably more irritating, especially for my family. But now those comments kind of just pass over me because we both know it’s not true.

‘Nick works hard, he has what he has. I work hard, I have what I have and then we buy each other stuff.’

Katie continued: ‘We’re both really comfortable with where we are with that and you will always get it because there’s an age gap.

‘I know plenty of people who are together and the same age where someone’s using the other one for money and they’re not happy.

‘So as long as I know it’s not true and he knows it’s not true, I think that’s, that’s pretty much all that matters.’

Nick has an estimated £7.5 million net worth but Katie has built up an impressive lingerie brand, having launched Boa Boa in 2022.

She has proved to be her own best advert for the brand, modelling the skimpy looks to her 102,000 Instagram followers.

Katie revealed her battle with endometriosis has impacted the pictures she posts as she is now on a mission to show off her ‘real’ figure.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus. It can cause pelvic pain, heavy periods, and difficulty getting pregnant.

Speaking about how she wants to represent real women Katie shared : ‘I’ve got slightly better at trying to show slightly more real, as in I’ve put weight on recently so I know I can’t just have the better picture of me where I haven’t eaten at the start of the morning.

‘I’ve got horrendous endometriosis, so I do bloat terribly but that’s the company ethos that it’s underwear that’s made to fit you regardless of your size.’

Back in October, Nick admitted he almost lost Katie after she was left questioning their relationship due to the intense trolling.

Giving her take on the unwanted public attention, she confessed it has put a strain on the relationship: ‘We’ve had like ups and downs with it because I am not from that background at all.

‘Nick I think generally has a very thick skin to it and he’s very good at dealing with it. I’m not.’

Discussing how she made the mistake of reading comments she continued: ‘Yeah, it’s a lot. I hate having my picture taken.

‘You know, to get a selfie, I’d take 60 and then select one so going in front of a red carpet even though I’ve done it a fair few times with him now, on the way there I’m absolutely terrified.

‘Then there are a lot of comments every time we do one of people saying that my eyes are too open or I look startled and, well, I am startled. I’m shell shocked.

‘I look like a wild animal in headlights, because I am. It’s not my natural habit. My natural habitat is tracksuit bottoms, cardigans, and my office at home, or something along those lines.

‘So being put in front of all the cameras and stuff is just not me, whereas Nick and the people that work in that industry they do it so naturally, and I’m not at all natural at it.’

Yet Katie is accepting that the attention comes with the nature of Nick’s job.

She explained: ‘I think there’s an understanding that I’ve got now that this is his job and, not necessarily the really hideous people that comment, but the attention is from people generally that watch the shows and without people watching the shows, he wouldn’t have a job.

‘So I’m a lot better at it now than I ever have been.’

How my fiancé Nick Knowles, 62, has fixed my self-esteem issues: Stunning lingerie boss Katie Dadzie, 34, reveals why older TV star lover encouraged her to share racy underwear snaps as she talks wedding plans

He’s known for his colourful relationship history, so fans went wild after Nick Knowles announced his engagement to much younger woman Katie Dadzie back in 2023.

While the TV star, 62, is hoping that third time will be a charm and this marriage will be his last, Katie, 34, is no Mrs DIY SOS, but instead a successful businesswoman in her own right.

Not interested in piggybacking off her fiancée’s success, Katie launched her own lingerie brand Boa Boa underwear back in 2022.

And the fashion brand is already going from strength to strength with high street retailer Next stocking Katie’s products in their stores.

Standing by her as her hard work came to fruition, Katie revealed it is thanks to Nick that she has found the confidence to strip down to her underwear and model for the lingerie brand as she confessed that deep down she isn’t comfortable in her own skin.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline in her first interview Katie explained: ‘Nick said to me he thought that I should do it to represent the brand and the ethos that we have of being comfortable with yourself and loving the skin you’re in.

‘But he said it would just didn’t make sense for me to be saying that to women and then me not doing it myself.’

Reflecting on her first time shooting, Katie admitted: ‘For me to be in front of the camera the first time was absolutely hideous. I was cacking my pants, I was terrified.’

The mother-of-two was surrounded by other confident models on the shoot who helped her come out of her shell as she explained one plus size model in particular encouraged her.

‘I was a size 8, if that, and I wouldn’t get out my dressing gown. I was kind of huddled in it and eventually she just kind of brought me out and said “Stop being an idiot. It’s your brand, it’s your underwear”.’

While she has yet to find ‘the dress’ she joked: ‘I don’t know what we’re doing. The most important thing for me is getting married and then secondly is the food.’

Hitting back at comments she has received calling her a ‘gold digger’, Katie admitted they don’t get to her as much as they used to in the beginning as both her and Nick know its not the case.

She said: ‘I think at the start, it was probably more irritating, especially for my family. But now those comments kind of just pass over me because we both know it’s not true.

‘Nick works hard, he has what he has. I work hard, I have what I have and then we buy each other stuff.

‘So we’re both really comfortable with where we are with that and you will always get it because there’s an age gap.’

Making her point clear Katie added: ‘I know plenty of people who are together and the same age where someone’s using the other one for money and they’re not happy.

‘So as long as I know it’s not true and he knows it’s not true, I think that’s, that’s pretty much all that matters.’

Speaking about adjusting to red carpets she said: 'I look like a wild animal in headlights, because I am. It's not my natural habit' (pictured at the Inspiration Awards for Women in 2024)

Giving her take on the unwanted public attention, she confessed it has put a strain on the relationship: ‘ We’ve had like ups and downs with it because I am not from that background at all’

Back in October, Nick admitted he almost lost Katie after she was left questioning the relationship due to the intense trolling.

The couple headed to Haus Of Cabaret to ring in the New Year together as Katie took to Instagram to share a series of sweet snaps from the night.

Dressing up for the occasion after his recent health issues, Nick, 62, appeared to be walking without crutches as he cut a smart figure in a simple white shirt and black blazer.

Meanwhile Katie, 34, looked stylish as she put on a very leggy display in a midnight blue velvet party dress.

Celebrating the evening she penned: ‘New Years at @hausofcabaret with my love. What an amazing evening and way to ring in 2025 Happy New Year✨’.

It comes after Nick revealed he was forced to pay for his knee surgery after Strictly Come Dancing ‘refused’ to pay up.

The DIY SOS star had to pull out of the live shows in October after badly injuring his knee during rehearsals.

After going through two major operations to help him ‘walk normally again’, Nick pleaded the BBC to help out with rehab costs.

According to The Sun, in a now-edited post, he said: ‘Thank you for all the amazing messages. To answer a few questions . . . the brace helps keep it stable as I recover.

‘No, Strictly insurance did not cover the operations. I paid for them myself but I’m hoping they will help with rehab.’

MailOnline contacted the BBC for a comment.

Last week, Nick revealed he’s learning to walk ‘normally’ again as he shared a candid clip of himself attempting to walk up the stairs using crutches, with the assistance of a medical professional.

In the video, Nick is also padded out with knee and elbow braces as he slowly takes it step by step, admitting he hopes to be ‘back to 100% fitness’ by August 2025.

Updating his 312,000 followers, he wrote in the caption: ‘So it wasn’t on my letter to Santa for two major operations – one to reattach my bicep and a second to build a new ACL and mend two years in the meniscus.

‘It’s been frustrating and very expensive but I’m determined to get back to 100% fitness which I hope will be around August 2025. Thanks for all the well wishes and encouragement – happy new year all.’

Nick previously took to his Instagram to explain his absence from the Strictly final back in December.

Nick revealed he wasn’t appearing on the show or in the group dance after having a knee operation two days before for the injury he sustained while competing in the competition.

He firstly suffered a shoulder injury when he was changing a tyre on his car and then a failed knee jump during a dance rehearsal left him on crutches.

The presenter told his followers: ‘Hello everyone. So it’s Saturday night, and the big final is on TV. I’m watching it, same as you, but from home rather than being in the studio because, unfortunately, I had a big arm operation, and I’ve now also had a big leg operation.

‘As a result, I’m only two days out from surgery, so I can’t be there.

‘But I’m sat here watching the amazing show like you, wishing the best of luck to my buddies – JB, Sarah, Chris, and Tasha – who all deserve to be champions, so I hope they all do great.

‘Thank you for all your lovely well-wishes and for wishing me a speedy recovery. I’m really sorry I can’t be there with all the others too. It’s been the most wonderful experience.

‘Merry Christmas to all of you, happy New Year, and congratulations to whoever wins the final.’

‘I had to have the operation now to be mobile and ready to start filming on @BBCDIYSOS at the beginning of February.

‘Lots of rehab and work with physios to come but I will go at it as hard as I did the dance training and success will be managed in stages.

Katie and Nick caused controversy when she shared a naughty snap to her Instagram to celebrate Nick’s 61st birthday last year.

Katie hit back at trolls after they slammed her for posting a racy picture of the pair together.

The hateful comments from trolls come after the lingerie mogul took to Instagram on Thursday to post a carousel of snaps celebrating her fiancé Nick’s birthday.

In one particular snap, Katie can be seen posing in a white bustier and thong suspenders as Nick was pictured behind giving her a helping hand.

She captioned the post, ‘Happy birthday to my love and best friend (and fiancé) You make me smile and laugh all the time and I’m so happy that you’re in my life so we can keep making lovely memories and taking special pictures with my eyes closed.’

However, the very racy snap attracted some troll comments as some branded Katie ‘desperate’ and ‘cringe’.

On Friday, Katie shared some nasty comments on her Instagram stories, and captioned the post with ‘Today’s trolling delight.’

In the snap, one troll commented, ‘Your mother must be so proud… what a claim to dame, Nick Knowles’ current b***h (number 67) and getting your a***e out on line. Plus if you’re 33 I’m the queen of sheba’.

While another commented: ‘Why would you want people to see this. So desperate and cringe.’

However, Nick appeared to clap back at the trolls by showing how unfazed he was by the comments.

Taking to his Instagram Stories, the star posted the snap and captioned it: ‘When your fiancée owns a lingerie brand and asks you to straighten the straps on a photo shoot (shocked emoji)’.

It comes after Nick gushed about his fiancée Katie, saying she will ‘travel almost anywhere’ in the world to be with him.

The star asked for the sex toy business owner’s hand in marriage after she flew out to visit him while he was on a trip to New Orleans.

Nick appeared on ITV’s Lorraine on Friday, saying, ‘She will travel almost anywhere I’m working.

‘When I get home, I spend time with my little boy, who is just nine. Wherever I am in the world, she’ll come and join in too.’

Nick is father to son Eddie, nine, with his ex-wife Jessica, while he also shares daughter Tuesday and son Charlie with his ex-wife Gillian.

Katie has daughters Savannah, eight, and Alex, five, from a previous relationship.

Nick recalled the proposal: ‘I got her a sweetie ring. If she doesn’t travel to see me, we don’t get to see each other.

‘She came out to New Orleans to see me, and I thought this would be a great place to propose, but I didn’t have a ring, so I fashioned one. I got nail scissors on a Haribo, so it had a jewel.

‘My biggest fear was that she’d eat it because she loves Haribo. But she didn’t. We’ve replaced it now with a proper one.’

He added: ‘She will travel almost anywhere that I’m working. When I get home, I spend time with my little boy, who is just 9. Wherever I am in the world, she’ll come and join in too.’

Along with selling sex toys through her company, Boa Boa, Katie also designs lingerie.

Nick explained: ‘My girlfriend Katie designs lingerie. She’s already designing specific bras for [cancer] survivors.

‘There’s this thing of women not being able to get hold of lovely things. She wants to be body-positive. It’s such a lovely thing.’

TV star Nick, who split from his wife Jessica Rose Moor in 2016, made his first appearance with Katie in September 2021 after ending his romance with PR guru Emily Hallinan in February 2020.

Nick and Katie made their public debut as a couple at a restaurant in Bath after being friends for several years.

Nick Knowles explains his Strictly absence as star pulls out of the show’s final

Nick Knowles took to his Instagram to explain his absence from the Strictly final on Saturday evening.

The 62-year-old star filmed himself watching the live show from the comfort of his fiancée Katie Dadzie’s home in Berkshire.

He told his followers: ‘Hello everyone.

Alongside the clip, he penned: ‘So I can’t be there at the final because I’m only two days out of surgery and it was quite a big operation on my knee – for those that want to know it was a full ACL reconstruction and two meniscus repairs which included harvesting a replacement tendon from my hamstring – and I’m still recovering from the operation to re attach my distal bicep which makes moving on crutches difficult too.

‘I had to have the operation now to be mobile and ready to start filming on @BBCDIYSOS at the beginning of February.

‘Lots of rehab and work with physios to come but I will go at it as hard as I did the dance training and success will be managed in stages.

‘First to be able to walk without crutches, climb stairs, walk safely on uneven ground by February and then dance too as I have to be able to do my first dance at my wedding in June and I’m assured if I work hard I will be back to 100% as good as new in about 8 months

‘Best of luck to my buddies competing tonight and those who are back together in studio. I loved the dancing and the cameraderie – the injuries not so much.

‘Merry Xmas to you all and thank you for your wonderful messages wishing me to get well soon.

‘I’ve got some great work coming this year with more amazing DIY SOS shows – two of which we have filmed already and so many wonderful families to introduce you to – there’s two amazing travel shows through Mongolia coming soon too which is epic and beautiful and full of amazing people.

The DIY SOS presenter has since revealed that it could take him around nine month to recover from the injuries.

Nick looked to be in good hands though as he was supported by his 34-year-old fiancée Katie Dadzie, who runs a lingerie company.

The pair shared a kiss as Nick walked to Katie’s 4×4 so she could give him a lift home following the recent operation.

The TV presenter kept comfortable in a short sleeved black T-shirt which he teamed with a pair of shorts and white Nike trainers.

Disaster first struck for Nick during a dress rehearsal with Strictly pro partner Luba Mushtuk, which reportedly saw the star do a jump and take a bad landing.

It came just weeks after the TV host hurt his shoulder and arm whilst changing a car tyre.

Nick is now hoping he will recover in time for his first dance at his wedding to Katie next summer.

He shared: ‘We’ve booked our wedding for next summer and the plan is for us to be able to do a first dance. It won’t be a full Strictly routine but I’m determined to have a special dance with Katie.’

It comes after her fiancé Nick Knowles, 62, gave an update on the Strictly Come Dancing final after his stint on the show was plagued by various injuries

The post comes after Katie’s fiancé Nick, 62, issued an update on Strictly following his injury-laden stint on the show.

He and his professional dance partner Luba Mushtuk, 34, were forced to pull out of Movie Week after the star hurt his shoulder and knee.

Nick fell and injured his knee during a jump, leaving him on crutches and heading to the hospital for an MRI scan.

The TV presenter was well enough to return to Strictly but his comeback was short-lived as he became the third celebrity to be eliminated earlier this month.

Taking to social media, a fan asked: ‘Will you still be able to do the end of series dance in the final? Wouldn’t seem right you not being there.’

Nick then replied saying: ‘I’m not sure my injuries will allow – I have to wait for the knee operation until the bicep operation has healed so I can use crutches afterwards.’

‘So I don’t think recovery will be in time sadly.’

Prior to this, Nick shared a video from his hospital bed where he told fans he has ‘two or three months’ of physiotherapy ahead.

He said: ‘Just woken up from my op.’

‘All went well by all accounts so I have a reattached bicep now so bit of physio over the next two or three months and all should be right as rain and back to 100% I think.’

‘So that’s one down and one to go on the knee,’ he added and captioned the video: ‘All done – thanks to Mr Ahrens the surgeon and all the medical staff.’

Nick and Luba lost the dance-off to Shayne Ward and Nancy Xu.

Both couples performed their routines again; Shayne and Nancy performed their Cha Cha to Ain’t No Love (Ain’t No Use) by Sub Sub feat. Melanie Williams.

Then, Nick and Luba performed their Charleston to Rain on the Roof from the film Paddington 2.

However, despite narrowly making it back into the competition as he recovered from his injuries, he was soon sent home by all four judges – Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke.

When asked by Tess about their time on the show, Nick said: ‘I’ve really, really been surprised by how much I’ve loved doing it and by two things that happen.’

He explained: ‘One is how much you care each week, and the other is how much you don’t want to let down your partner.’

‘The only reason I could do this is simply because of Luba’s changes, she’s been amazing.’

King Charles’ words were included in a letter to King’s Trust Young Achiever winner Molly Leonard, whose grandmother shed tears of pride as she read it to her.

In addition to praising Molly, he wrote: ‘On this 25th anniversary of the Pride of Britain Awards, I send my warmest admiration to all of this year’s winners. You each represent the very best in our society.’

The Prime Minister told winners: ‘Britain is proud of you’.

‘For a quarter of a century, the Pride of Britain awards have celebrated the people who embody everything that is great about Britain. These are people from all walks of life, but they all have one thing in common. They’re heroes.

‘They may not be the cape-wearing superheroes we normally think of – in fact, they look just like the rest of us. But they do have something that makes them very special indeed. Bravery, determination, generosity, empathy and huge spirit.

‘They have the power to touch our hearts, to make us hopeful, to make us proud. They’re a testament to the incredible things people can achieve even in the face of hardship.’
