Doctor Who star Millie Gibson let her hair down with her co-stars on Monday as she headed to the swanky premiere after party at Kettner’s in London.

The actress, 20, who has reprised her role as companion Ruby Sunday for the upcoming second series, stunned in a black strapless dress as she departed the celebrations.

Earlier in the evening, Millie posed for snaps alongside The Doctor himself Ncuti Gatwa, and new companion Varada Sethu, who plays Belinda Chandra.

And as she headed to the afterparty, Millie was joined by one of the series’ guest stars Rose Ayling-Ellis, who put on a leggy display in a black mini dress and tights.

Many of this year’s guest stars were also in attendance, including Charlie Condou, Ariyon Bakare and Michelle Greenidge.

The second season is said to feature more dangers to planet Earth, with the trailer suggesting that the whole of reality is also at risk, as The Doctor begins a lengthy quest to get Belinda back home to Earth.

The star-studded premiere comes amid rumours that the show, which has been an on-and-off staple of British TV since 1963, could soon be shelved.

Rumours circulated claiming that Ncuti, who rose to fame in Netflix’s Sex Education, was planning a move stateside to focus on other acting projects.

A source told The Sun: ‘Ncuti doesn’t want to be tied to the series beyond this and plans to relocate to Los Angeles with several Hollywood projects standing by for him.

‘His team also see a lot of fan backlash from the series, and don’t want the perception of him still being The Doctor to get in the way of any future work.’

They continued: ‘The show has been poorly managed in recent years.

‘There’s a lot of people who’ve been working on this show for years and now being cast aside due to poor leadership.

‘People warned some episodes were getting too caught up on an agenda rather than telling a story and those people got shouted down, ignored.’

This prompted the BBC to issue a statement denying the possibility that Doctor Who could once again be shelved, as it was between 1989 and 2005.

A spokeswoman for Doctor said: ‘Doctor Who has not been shelved.

‘As we have previously stated, the decision on season 3 will be made after season 2 airs.

‘The deal with Disney+ was for 26 episodes – and exactly half of those still have to transmit.’

Disney+ bought the show’s international distribution rights from the BBC in 2022 for a reported £80 million.

The deal is said to have massively increased Doctor Who’s budget at a time when many popular British shows – such as Coronation Street – are struggling financially.

This will be the third TV adaptation of The Forsyte Saga in 60 years as John’s portrait of a wealthy British family in 1880s London is recreated once again.

This latest rendition will be made into a six-part season based on the 1920s novels with the hope it will become a returning series.

The BBC 1967 adaptation was watched by audiences of up to 18 million and the 2002 version on ITV featured a stellar cast including Damian Lewis and Gina McKee.

The latest reimagining is housed at Mammoth Screen, the ITV Studios-backed British production company behind Parade’s End, The Serpent, and Victoria.

Joining Millie in the all-star cast is BAFTA winning Francesca Annis who is taking on the role of the formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann.

Meanwhile True Blood star Stephen Moyer will Ann’s eldest son, Jolyon Senior, who is also head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co.

Completing the cast is The Morning Show star, Jack Davenport, Joshua Orpin, who is best known for his role in Titans and Tom Durant Pritchard from This Is Going To Hurt.

Despite featuring only British actors the series will be aired on US network PBS.

Doctor Who star Millie announced she’d be stepping into the role of Ruby Sunday in November 2022, during a special appearance at the 2022 Children in Need fundraiser.

She branded the opportunity as a ‘dream come true’ before making her debut in the 2023 Christmas special.

It was reported at the start of this year that Millie would only appear in a handful of episodes before being replaced by Varada Sethu, 32, who was said to have already started filming.

A former Coronation Street star is set to join the cast in the next series of Doctor Who.

Charlie Condou, 51, who played Marcus Dent on the ITV soap, is set to star in the upcoming season as a character called Gary, according to The Sun.

In episodes set to air next year, Charlie, who also appeared in medical drama Holby City, will make his debut.

The soap star will follow in the footsteps of his former co-stars Bruno Langley, Sarah Lancashire and Millie Gibson – who plays the current Time Lord’s sidekick Ruby Sunday.

In February, 2020, Charlie revealed that he left the ITV show in 2014 to spend more time with his family residing in North London.

Charlie played Marcus on the Manchester-based soap from 2007–08 and 2011–2014.

His character had several dramatic storylines, including on-screen romances with Sean Tully (Antony Cotton), Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) and Todd Grimshaw (Bruno Langley).

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly at the time, he said: ‘: ‘My time on Corrie was fantastic but being in Manchester was really difficult, my family and my kids are down here and I wasn’t getting to see them, that’s why I left.’

Charlie is raising his two children, Georgia, 14, and Hal, 11, with his husband Cameron Laux – who he married in 2015.

The cast announcement comes just weeks after Doctor Who producer Russell T Davies has said ‘no decision’ has been made yet for the line-up of series three.

Appearing at Comic Con in San Diego alongside Ncuti Gatwa, 31, and Millie Gibson, the screenwriter spoke about what was in store for the science fiction show.

Russell, 62, admitted decisions about who would star in series three haven’t been made yet as they are still in the middle of filming the second season.

The screenwriter said: ‘We’ve shot season two, but that’s only halfway through. We’ve got all those months of post to come. It’s a long way off, so no decisions yet.’

Ncuti said playing the Doctor is ‘surreal’ and when the host joked he had signed up for the next 10 seasons, he replied: ‘Of course!’.

‘I am still growing into the Doctor but season two was lovely. It felt like the suit was fully fitted. I was finding my feet in season one and having the time of my life but season two felt like a chance to flex the muscles properly,’ he said, according to The Mirror.

Asides from filming the second series, Ncuti will star in a West End production of The Importance of Being Earnest later this year.

Meanwhile, Millie, 20, who plays Ruby Sunday,  will reportedly only make a fleeting appearance in the next series – despite joining Ncuti and Russell at Comic Con.

She will be replaced by Varada Sethu, 32, who has been pictured filming with Ncuti.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies previously confirmed that Millie’s character had simply been put on hold for now but she would return to the show before long.

He explained: ‘This is a pause. I genuinely felt Ruby’s story paused there. She couldn’t get all that information about her family, all that emotional overload, and run off in the TARDIS. It pauses there. She’s coming back.’

In the meantime Millie has been pursing other ventures as she stars in the new reimagining of The Forsyte Saga.

It comes after the show’s future was questioned, despite filming for the fifteenth series already starting, after the fourteenth failed to attract viewers and resulted in ‘underwhelming’ ratings.

An ambitious deal with Disney – rumoured to be worth $100million – meant each episode is aired on BBC iPlayer at midnight on Fridays to appease US viewers before being broadcast on its traditional Saturday teatime slot on terrestrial television.

It meant a slump in viewers overall despite the BBC contract with the American media giant intended to revitalise the show with lavish special effects and Davies, 61, stated the deal would finally put the show, ‘Up there with your Star Wars, your Marvel stuff’.

Instead, the final episode attracted only 2.02million viewers – a sharp drop from Jodie Whittaker’s final outing as the first female Doctor, which was watched by 3.7million in real time.

A BBC spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Overnight ratings no longer provide an accurate picture of all those who watch drama in an on demand world, this season of Doctor Who premiered on iPlayer nearly 24 hours before broadcast, and episode one has already been viewed by over 6 million viewers and continues to grow.’

‘Doctor Who remains one of the most watched programmes on iPlayer and is the BBC’s top drama for under 35’s this year making it one of the biggest programmes for the demographic across all streamers and broadcasters’.

In the new episode, the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) tried to identify Ruby’s mother by reconstructing CCTV footage in 3D, but they were unsuccessful, leaving her emotional.

A dark red cloud then appeared inside UNIT’s time window device and then escaped into the corporeal world.

Later, Susan Twist – who has been a recurring guest star and was thought to be the Doctor’s granddaughter –  morphed into a demonic entity while still on a worldwide livestream, leaving the Doctor stunned.

Sutekh described itself as both ‘mother and father’ to all of the gods of chaos in the universe, warning: ‘He has hidden in the howling void.

‘He has hidden within the tempest. He’s braved the storm and the darkness and pain and he whispered to the vessel. All this time, he whispered and delighted and seduced and the vessel did obey.

‘That reveal was 1000/10’; ‘What an amazing episode. I cannot wait until next week!’

Doctor Who’s series finale will be released at midnight on Saturday on BBC iPlayer in the UK, and will air at 6:40pm on BBC One that evening. The series is available to stream internationally on Disney+.

The Forsyte Saga, based on John Galsworthy’s novels, is currently filming in the UK and Italy and follows the lives and loves of the wealthy Forsyte family.

Based on the Nobel Prize-winning novels detailing love, loyalty, ambition and betrayal, The Forsyte Saga is written by acclaimed British screenwriter Debbie Horsfield and produced by Mammoth Screen, the team behind global television hit Poldark.

The ensemble cast also includes Francesca Annis, Jack Davenport, Tom Durant Pritchard, Jamie Flatters, Danny Griffin, Susan Hampshire, Owen Igiehon, Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Moyer, Josette Simon and Eleanor Tomlinson.

A UK broadcaster is yet to be announced for the series.

At Wednesday’s premiere Ncuti was feeling playful as he scrunched up his face in hilarious style. He cut a very trendy figure in his striking black and white two-piece pinstripe suit and a statement biker belt.

His double-breasted blazer featured 80s-inspired padded shoulders, which he layered over a basic black T-shirt.

Their appearance comes after the show’s runner Russell T Davies said it is time for a new incarnation of the Time Lord to carry ’emotions on the surface more visibly instead of hiding them away’ after years of being emotionally reserved.

Russell, who returned to the series as showrunner in 2022, described the Scot as ‘already one of our great actors’.

He said: ‘Quite by chance, I wanted a more emotional Doctor, and lo and behold, we have cast someone whose emotions are vast, turbulent, and visible…

‘Historically, Doctors have tended to keep their emotions to themselves and play the game of being reserved. And the actors have done that brilliantly…

‘But right now in 2024, I want a man who cries when it’s sad. And Ncuti does that to an astonishing degree.’

Russell said he could not take his eyes off Ncuti during Netflix series Sex Education, in which he played Eric Effiong, and predicts in five years’ time he will be starring as the next James Bond in the MI6 film franchise.

He went on: ‘It’s so exciting that it inspires me. It generates stories in me. It’s an absolute joy to work with him’.

The showrunner, executive producer and writer said the new sci-fi series will see an ’emotional’ Doctor open up about his family ‘in a way that he’s never done before’, as well as connect with Ruby Sunday – who is also an orphan.

‘It’s time for a new Doctor who carries those emotions on the surface more visibly instead of hiding them away,’ Russell said.

‘The Doctor doesn’t just wear one heart on their sleeve; they wear two hearts on their sleeve. I thought it was just the right time for that to be centre stage.’

The first episode titled Space Babies will see the Doctor and Ruby Sunday on a baby farm being run by babies facing off against a Bogeyman, alongside Bridgerton star Golda Rosheuvel, who will play Jocelyn in the episode.

Golda said she got to the end of a press tour for the Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, and she told her agent she would love to next star in Doctor Who.

‘It’s one of those shows that every actor has their eye on. It’s like a rite of passage,’ she said.

‘I had auditioned for it several times over the years, and friends had always pipped me to the post. But now the timing was definitely right…

‘…I just randomly put the request out there, and it came back. So the stars, the solar system, the whole Doctor Who universe aligned.’

Gatwa said the monster in the first episode is ‘absolutely terrifying’. He said: ‘We certainly are on track to get a whole new generation of kids hiding behind the sofa’.

The second episode of the series will see the Doctor and Ruby Sunday meet The Beatles, but discover that the all-powerful Maestro – played by US drag queen and actor Jinkx Monsoon – is changing history.

Jinkx Monsoon, real name Jerick Hoffer, said ‘no-one cared that this was only my third live-action scripted TV appearance’, adding that Gatwa ‘was just so generous’ while filming.

Doctor Who: What the critics think

    The Guardian

    Rating:

‘Conventionally, an episode to open a much-anticipated new season will be tightly honed, but Space Babies bulges loosely, despite going to absurd lengths to accommodate new fans…

‘Much better is episode two, The Devil’s Chord, which takes the Doctor and Ruby to Abbey Road to witness the Beatles recording their debut album.

‘If the narrative’s ultimate message is sentimental, amounting as it does to Davies saying, ”I love music, me! It’s brilliaaaaant!”, [Jinx] Monsoon’s wicked-witch flamboyance gives it a menacing edge.’

    The Telegraph

    Rating:

‘Mostly, there’s nothing here to scare anyone who has recently graduated from Bluey and Peppa Pig… The talking babies make for a silly bit of storytelling, but I enjoyed it on my children’s behalf.’

‘[The Devils Chord] has a good opening scene but then goes on for what feels like forever, with drag queen Jinkx Monsoon chewing the scenery as Maestro.

‘The main asset of the new Doctor Who is Gatwa, who carries the series along with the force of his megawatt charisma. When the Doctor tells someone: ”Nobody grows up wrong. You are what you are, and that is magnificent,” it may be another example of Davies hammering home a point, but in Gatwa’s delivery it becomes a joyful message of self-acceptance.’

    Variety

‘Even with this new energy, some episodes are more riveting than others. Episode 2 leans into the twist-dancing and beehive hair of the ’60s.

‘But it doesn’t quite come together, despite Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon’s appearance as the music-stealing Maestro. Yet the profound bond between Ruby and the Doctor keeps the season from ever going off-kilter.’

The Radio Times – Space Babies

    Rating:

‘Space Babies is a frothy sci-fi romp that serves as a solid jumping-on point for newcomers but should also satisfy traditionalists with its scares, larks and intergalactic derring-do.

‘More so than in his two previous appearances, Gatwa gets to run the gamut of the Doctor’s emotional complexity here – their joie de vivre, their compassion, their absolute compulsion to keep on moving forward and never look back, but also their shattering loneliness.’

The Radio Times – The Devils Chord

    Rating:

‘Maestro is a villain that feels like they could jump out of the screen and they’re impossible to look away from. It’s almost difficult to hate them because it’s clear how much Monsoon relished bringing such a camp, theatrical and, in the best way, completely ridiculous villain to mainstream TV.

‘Is The Devil’s Chord a perfect Doctor Who story? Absolutely not. But it’s vivid, silly, gripping, and sees our brand new Doctor battle a larger than life villain across the streets of 1960s London. We could certainly be doing a lot worse.’

    The Times

    Space Babies

    Rating:

‘In the opening two episodes of his first full series with his new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, and companion, Ruby Sunday, Davies certainly goes to amazing places with an almost child-like glee — all aided by dollops of cash from its co-producer Disney that can really be seen on screen.’

‘There are also some pointed ”Russellisms” here too – we get a homily on refugees, one of the babies is told that no one is made ”wrong” and the Doctor says that ”monsters … [are] just creatures you haven’t met yet”.

    The Devil’s Chord

    Rating:

‘The sound of Who is an important part of the show that is overdue a celebration and it’s one of many perfectly judged imaginative leaps that Davies is clearly keen to take. His new Who has definitely got its mojo back.’

    Collider

Davies adds a richness to the stories of the previous era and stitches Fifteen’s journey to that of the past Doctors, with the help of Gatwa’s well-researched performance.

‘Nothing’s been glossed over or ignored, despite not necessarily being required viewing for new audiences to keep up.’

    IGN

‘The Sex Education breakout is electric in his new role, encapsulating everything that The Doctor is on the surface, utilizing a youthful energy that’s tied up in, or even masking, a mind that’s lived for thousands of years.’

‘There’s a familiar feeling to this new era, but Episodes 1 and 2 still sparkle with ingenuity and embrace the changes at every opportunity. If that isn’t Doctor Who, then I don’t know what is.’

The first reviews for the long-awaited new series of Doctor Who have finally been release, as fans count down to the release of the first two episodes this weekend.

The second sess them transported back to the 1960s, where they meet The Beatles, and come face-to-face with a sinister new threat

The first two episodes from the upcoming series will drop on BBC iPlayer at midnight on May 11 before then airing on BBC One later that evening.

The new season of Doctor Who will see Ncuti return as the Fifteenth Doctor, alongside Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday, after they made their debut on Christmas Day last year in The Church on Ruby Road.

Within the upcoming series, audiences will see the Doctor and Ruby travel through time and space on adventures to unknown lands, to the Regency era in England, to outer space worlds and the sixties.

Last week Ncuti admitted he’s ‘terrified’ ahead of the start of the new series after such a long-awaited build up.

When asked how he felt ahead of the release during an appearance on The One Show on Friday, he said: ‘Terrifying, terrifying, but exciting as well as we have poured so much love into it.

‘I’m ready for the world to see it. Heart is racing but ready for it.’

Ncuti is to become the first queer Doctor Who and the first black Time Lord for a full series.

He told Variety: ‘Do you know what? It makes perfect sense to me.

‘I feel like anyone that has a problem with someone who’s not a straight white man playing this character, you’re not really, truly a fan of the show. You’ve not been watching!

‘Because the show is about regeneration, and the Doctor is an alien — why would they only choose to be this sort of person?’

Showrunner Russell T Davies echoed Ncuti’s thoughts: ‘They weren’t exactly the straightest men in the past.

On how the screen star’s Doctor is different, Russell added: ‘You’re talking about someone who does have a lightness and a joy about him that, to me, chimes with queer energy.

‘It’s very rarely driving the story vehemently, but you will see moments exploring it. We’re not delivering a neutered Doctor.’

Doctor Who will be released at midnight in the UK on BBC iPlayer, and Disney+ internationally.

‘There’s a familiar feeling to this new era, but Episodes 1 and 2 still sparkle with ingenuity and embrace the changes at every opportunity. If that isn’t Doctor Who, then I don’t know what is.’

Host Robin Roberts asked: ‘A long line of actors have played the doctor but you say this is a doctor for Gen Z?’

Ncuti then explained: ‘Yeah, I would say so. I would say this iteration is a more vulnerable doctor.

‘One of the more open with his feelings doctors that we have seen and it reflects our society and the conversations that we are having today.’

Ncuti made his debut as the Time Lord on Christmas Day in a special episode of the show last year but his first full series will air next month.

However the BBC have frustrated fans after they announced the two first episodes, Space Babies and The Devil’s Chord, will both debut on the BBC and Disney + from midnight on Friday 10 May – rather than the usual peak-time Saturday slot.

Devotees of the sci-fi series say the decision to launch the show in the graveyard slot is a snub to its younger fans, who will be fast asleep at the time.

They also say it undermines the show’s reputation for being ‘event television’. The unusual scheduling decision is the result of a new, multi-million-pound deal between the BBC – which has exclusive rights to the series in the UK – and Disney+, which has broadcast rights for the rest of the world.

For the first time, it has been agreed the show will be broadcast around the globe simultaneously.

This decision benefits American viewers, who will be able to watch episodes as they air each week on Disney+ at the family-friendly time of 7pm in the eastern US.

British viewers who want to watch the show when it is released will have to tune in to the episodes on the BBC’s iPlayer at midnight.

The BBC will then broadcast the new episodes again in the show’s traditional Saturday evening slot.

Sitting alongside Millie and the episode’s producer Chris May, during a commentary of the Christmas Day 2023 episode, Russell joked about Millie’s name being broadcast across the screen in big letters.

He suggested that was what was missing from her time in Coronation Street.

Amid reports of her axing, a resurfaced interview saw Millie admit that if her new role on Doctor Who ‘went wrong, at least she’d tried it’ as she gambled her steady job on Coronation Street.

After starring as trouble-prone teen Kelly Neelan on Coronation Street since 2019, the actress decided to take a huge risk and leave the soap, a prospect which appeared to have initially paid off.

Speaking to the Independent last month, Millie explained: ‘I’d thought: ‘I’m so young, why the hell not? I’ve not got a mortgage, I’ve not got kids, not got anyone to pay. So if it does go wrong, at least I’ll have tried it.”

Ncuti made his first appearance as The Doctor in the third 60th Anniversary Special in December, when The Doctor ‘bi-generated’ meaning two incarnations of him were in existence at the same time.

Speaking ahead of the festive episode, titled The Church On Ruby Road, Ncuti revealed he wants to bring his ‘black beautiful self’ to the character, when asked what will be different about his incarnation of The Doctor.

He said: ‘It is such a hard question to answer because the role of the Doctor is everything anyway.

‘He is an explorer who has been around for a billion years so they have so many quirks and intricacies, rage and joy and they are full of a lot of emotions.

‘So to pick what I was going to bring out differently is a very hard question to answer. I guess myself, my black beautiful self. I bring my blackness.’

The actress showed off her toned figure in a white crochet bikini top but appeared to have caught the sun as she sported a rather red face and chest.

In another, Millie admired the sunset on a wooden terrace with a glass of wine.

Millie starred as the 15th Doctor’s companion Ruby Sunday in Doctor Who but, despite the success of the 2023 Christmas special, she was axed from the show’s second series.

Showrunner Russell T Davies has reportedly already written out her character and will only retuned to ‘tie up loose ends’ after her first series ends.

Yet all is not lost for the star, as it is rumoured that she could be returning to her Corrie role as Kelly Neelan, a part she played from 2019 to 2022.

Rumours among soap fans have been rife as they are convinced they have figured out Millie’s next TV move following Russell’s comments during a commentary of the Christmas Day 2023 episode.

Sitting alongside Millie and the episode’s producer Chris May, Russell joked about Millie’s name being broadcast across the screen in big letters.

He suggested that was what was missing from her time in Coronation Street.

Varada Sethu has been confirmed as Doctor Who’s latest companion, with the actress pictured filming scenes for the new series last week

‘Should’ve had that cat and the cobbles and Millie Gibson,’ he said, before assuring her that he’d have a word with the team over at the ITV soap.

But one Twitter/X user pointed out that he seemed to mumble ‘when you go back’ at the end of the sentence.

This mumble led to spiraling rumours on social media as fans are evidently eager to see the blonde beauty back on their screens.

Last week, Varada, 32, who is best known for playing DS Mishal Ali in the BBC apocalyptic TV Series Hard Sun, filmed scenes in Wales with Ncuti.

The actress was seen on set with Ncuti as Penarth Pier was transported back to the 1950s with American cars, including a 1954 Cadillac sat outside the Palazzo theatre.
