Sunrise star Mark Beretta makes shock workplace confession after 25 years on the Seven morning show

Sunrise star Mark Beretta has made a shock workplace confession, after 25 years in the role.

The beloved sports reporter, 58, recently celebrated 30 years at Channel Seven and 25 as part of the Sunrise team.

Speaking to New Idea, Beretta said that, despite the decades of early morning starts, he wouldn’t change a second.

‘I haven’t worked a day in my life,’ he told the publication.

Beretta, who has covered a raft of major sporting moments for Seven, added that he never dreamt his career would last as long.

‘The younger me would think I was telling porkie pies if I said I’d get to cover sports on TV for 30 years,’ he said.

Outside of his long-standing presenting gig, Beretta recently stepped into another role – grandfather.

His daughter Ava, 21, and her partner welcomed their first child, Arlo, 18 months ago.

‘Being a grandad is just the best. The love you feel is something else,’ he told the publication.

‘I do like to think I’m the coolest grandad ever – and I’m trying to teach Arlo to say “cool Pa”, but I haven’t succeeded yet.’

Beretta shares daughter Ava with ex-wife of 22 years Rachael, as well as son Ben, 18.

The couple, who married in 2001, confirmed they quietly parted ways via a statement in October 2023.

‘At the start of the year, after a great deal of reflection and 22 years of marriage, Rach and I came to the conclusion that a separation was best for us,’ Beretta told Daily Mail Australia through a Seven spokesperson.

‘We remain good friends, and our two children and grandchild remain our focus and priority as we move forward with love, dignity, and respect.’

There were signs of trouble leading up the split, with the pair placing their Mosman home on the market in February of that year.

The sports reporter sold their Balmoral Slopes home three months later for $13million.

They had to settle for less than their initial expectations of $15.5 million, slashing the listed price by $1.75 million.

The couple had spent the past few years rebuilding the Mandolong Road house, which they bought in 2016 for more than $6million.

They spent more than $900,000 on its renovation, according to council records.

Mark has previously spoken fondly of his wife, describing how they fell for each other after being set up on a blind date by friends.

'The younger me would think I was telling porkie pies if I said I'd get to cover sports on TV for 30 years,' he said

‘The younger me would think I was telling porkie pies if I said I’d get to cover sports on TV for 30 years,’ he said

‘(My friend) said to me, “If you don’t come to the Middle Park Hotel tonight, you will regret it for the rest of your life,”‘ he told The Daily Telegraph in 2017.

‘So, I actually did a U-turn and went back. Rach and I talked for about 20 minutes, and I just went, “Wow, she’s awesome”‘.

Following the split, Mark had gained a reputation as quite the sex symbol and was rumoured to be dating glamorous Sunrise nutritionist Sarah Di Lorenzo.

Speaking to Stellar in 2024, Di Lorenzo shot down the suggestion she was smitten with Beretta.

‘It was ridiculous given that we’ve never even been for a coffee’ she said.

‘I was shocked and completely disturbed that someone went out of their way to make something up’.

Who let the dogs out? Bizarre moment someone’s pet pooch wanders across Sunrise stage through live telecast

Sunrise often welcomes guests of all shapes, sizes and genus every morning, but viewers were left stunned when one furry guest crashed the set on Wednesday.

The Channel Seven breakfast TV show appeared to be having a bring your pet to work day behind the scenes as one pet pooch got loose during a live telecast.

In a blink and you’ll miss it moment, the tan dog casually wandered across the studio behind fill-in anchors Monique Wright and Michael Usher at 6.41am.

Mark Beretta had just finished covering the daily sports news when the camera cut back to the main desk.

All seemed to be well as the team didn’t appear to notice anything odd happening on set as they spoke about the recent Dakar Rally happening in Saudi Arabia.

However, eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed a furry streak crossing the screen as someone’s dog passed behind the anchors and exited stage left.

Despite passing right by newsreader Amber Laidler’s chair on its way out, each of the hosts were the picture of professionalism as they pretended not to see the pooch.

However, it seems host Monique, 51, did notice the dog as moments before it was spotted on screen, she could be seen subtly reaching beneath her desk to pet it.

She quickly pulled her hand back up as the camera’s cut back to her following coverage of sports news, and moments later the dog wandered off set.

The unscheduled appearance of the dog was not addressed by presenters, nor were there any dog related segments to explain the pooch’s presence.

When asked for comment on the matter, Channel Seven informed Daily Mail Australia the dog belonged to co-host Monique.

It’s not the only awkward moment to happen live on Sunrise in recent months, as one popular reporter was left red-faced in December after an encounter with a teacher.

Katie Brown experienced an embarrassing moment when she mistook a teacher for a student during a live cross at a school in Sydney’s west.

She could be seen moving through a large group of students who were enjoying a post-HSC celebration when the snafu occurred.

Katie had just finished talking to a student at St John Paul II Catholic College in Schofields about their HSC results when she tapped the shoulder of a female nearby.

‘Who have we got here?’ Katie asked.

After the teacher identified herself as Mrs. Canning, Katie cheekily asked her about her HSC results.

However, the teacher refused to play along and switched focus to highlight her student’s achievements.

‘I’m really proud of them. They did really well and worked really hard,’ she said.

Katie quickly recovered and told the youthful teacher: ‘You are also ageing very well, I mistook you for a student.’

Matt Doran’s ‘weird’ final show prompts viewer ‘conspiracies’ about the Sunrise star’s abrupt exit

Matt Doran’s final appearance on Weekend Sunrise on Sunday has been branded  ‘weird’ by some viewers.

The popular breakfast star did not host his farewell program, with Mark Beretta instead taking to the couch alongside Monique Wright, and Matt relegated to roving around the studio for a series of lighthearted segments instead.

He finally made it onto the couch for a final farewell during the show’s last hour.

The move has prompted speculation that the 41-year-old media veteran, who announced he was leaving the network last month, may have been ‘nudged’ rather than leaving entirely of his own accord.

He was not seen on the Weekend Sunrise desk on Saturday either.

One viewer described Matt’s farewell, while surrounded by his long term colleagues including his regular Weekend Sunrise co-host Wright, as ‘definitely weird’.

And the move has prompted speculation on industry blog Media Spy that the 41-year-old reporter, who announced he was leaving the network last month, may have been ‘pushed’

‘The early parts of the show was definitely weird, as well as the general vibe being given off from Seven in recent weeks including the announcement,’ the armchair critic wrote on industry blog Media Spy.

They continued: ‘Really hope it was Doran’s decision and he was well supported, especially knowing a lot of what he’s (openly) been through.

‘Bye Matt, hopefully he’ll pop up prominently on Aussie FTA again one day, maybe even Nine or Foxtel, as he’s demonstrated both his professional serious side but also his natural funny banter side at both Ten and Seven rather successfully now.’

Another viewer said: ‘I imagine his contract came up and he just chose not to renew it.

‘Possibly he was nudged by 7 not to renew but I don’t think it’s as big a deal as some are making it out to be..

Meanwhile, some viewers appeared to be offended by the discussion over Matt’s sudden exit from the troubled network.

‘I don’t really understand the conspiracies surrounding Matt’s departure,’ the viewer began.

‘No one really knows and most likely will never know…I find it distasteful and disgusting people here want to make a bigger deal out of it than it really is.’

‘I think it’s a fair discussion point to be honest,’ responded another viewer on the blog.

‘The questions behind Matt’s departure are more than valid considering just months ago there was a report that his position was being looked at.

‘Of course it could and probably is just a coincidence and the timing is what it is but it’s most certainly still a valid discussion topic.

‘Let’s not also forget that the network is in cost cutting mode too so the axing of a high profile talent wouldn’t be out of the question either.

‘The fact his lack of appearances since the announcement, and especially today just rocking up for the last hour, will naturally have people asking questions as to what’s happened behind the scenes.’

The Seven star recently opened up about his struggles with depression on The Morning Show.

He said he will be taking time to focus on family and to pursue other opportunities.

The breakfast show host broke down in tears speaking about his friendship with his closest colleague as he told Seven viewers of his decision.

‘Mon, you are not just a colleague, you are my best friend and I am going to miss you, any chance of a hug?’ he said.

In September – when Matt appeared on Morning Sunrise to spruik his latest book, Mental State, on Australia’s mental healthcare system – he bravely opened up about his own struggles with depression.

‘Are we getting better, do you think, Doctor, at putting our hand up like you did and saying, “I’ve got a problem with anxiety”?’ Matt asked Dr Cross.

‘I’ve had huge problems with depression over the last couple of years, too, but people, I think, are still frightened to come forward and say that.’

‘It’s amazing you say that the more we talk about it the better it is,’ Dr Cross said, commending Matt for speaking so openly about his depression on television.

Matt has sparked concerns in recent years after he mysteriously disappeared from work on two separate occasions.

In June, he failed to arrive to the Seven studios for work on Weekend Sunrise.

A network spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia at the time that Matt was ‘on leave’.

A Channel Seven reporter has been tipped to replace Doran.

Seven’s US Correspondent David Woiwod, who is based in Los Angeles, is likely to step into the co-hosting role opposite Monique Wright, according to news.com.au.

Common Phrases Banned in My House

Sarah Di Lorenzo has revealed the three common phrases she has banned her three teenage daughters from using in her house.

The Sunrise nutritionist gave a rare insight into her family life as she told how their are four words she won’t allow her kids Charlotte, 21, Coco, 19, and Chloe, 15, to use.

She said she has a ‘swear jar’ in her home but rather than using it for expletives, its purpose is to dissuade her daughters from saying some commonly heard phrases.

”’Fat”, ”skinny”, ”I can’t” and ”I’m scared”, I don’t accept them in my house,’ the health guru told The Daily Telegraph.

Sarah explained that her rules come into play because she wants to try and positively re-shape the language around health and diet culture for her daughters.

‘I speak about the importance of health, instead of saying ”don’t eat that lolly because you’re going to get fat” I say ”it has health consequences” and am very careful with language,’ she explained.

The author said she also doesn’t have scales in her home for her daughters to weigh themselves and has always uses a 22cm plate to serve meals in her home.

‘That was the size of the plate used in 1960, whereas the current plates are 32cm in sizing, over 1000 calories more,’ she shared.

Her latest remarks come just days after Sarah was forced to deny rumours that she is dating her Sunrise co-star Mark Beretta.

The celebrity TV star, who frequently appears on the breakfast show, found herself caught up in chatter about her love life after the TV star ended his marriage.

She firmly shut down the ‘ridiculous’ rumours as she set the record straight and told how she loves being a single parent and would be ‘happy’ to remain by herself.

‘Mark and I are colleagues and friends and he’s such a great guy – but I couldn’t believe it,’ the single mother-of-three told Stellar Magazine earlier this week.

‘It was ridiculous given that we’ve never even been for a coffee,’ the Channel 7 nutritionist continued.

‘I was shocked and completely disturbed that someone went out of their way to make something up.’

‘There’s nothing sad about not dating. I love being a single mum and I’m very happy to spend the rest of my life alone,’ she added.

Nat Barr on JLo and Ben Affleck’s rocky relationship reunion

Natalie Barr has given a brutal assessment of the current state of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s relationship.

The topic was broached on Tuesday with the Sunrise panel, including Natalie Barr, Matt Shirvington and Mark Beretta, discussing how the Hollywood couple were spotted together over the weekend and rumours of a possible reconciliation.

‘Many are wondering if there could be a possible reconciliation in their on again, off again relationship,’ presenter Monique Wright said as she introduced the short segment.

‘The estranged couple apparently shared brunch with their kids in Beverly Hills, with sources at the same venue reporting seeing the two holding hands and kissing,’ she continued.

Returning to the couch, Monique asked the panel if Jennifer and Ben had reached a particular point in their relationship.

‘Do you think they’ve got to the stage where the thought of their ex makes them vomit in their mouth?’ she asked.

Without skipping a beat, Nat replied with a firm ‘yes’ before surmising that the pair ‘can’t stand each other.’

‘They’re just doing it for the kids,’ Nat added in her brutal assessment of the relationship.

In the blink of an eye, Nat backtracked on her original call admitting: ‘no, I have no idea.’

Hopeless romantic Mark Beretta still held out hope for the couple.

‘There’s something a little bit there, isn’t there?,’ he asked. ‘They just keep coming back.’

‘Beretts is team Bennifer,’ Nat replied. ‘Who would’ve thought.’

Jennifer filed for divorce from Ben last month, following months of speculation about the state of their marriage.

‘Do you think they’ve got to the stage where the thought of their ex makes them vomit in their mouth?,’ Monique Wright asked the Sunrise panel

In papers filed to the court, seen by DailyMail.com the singer listed the date of their separation as April 26, 2024.

A source close to the star told DailyMail.com said those close to Jennifer are growing tired of her chaotic love life.

‘After four failed marriages, her friends feel that she should take a look inside and focus on herself instead of what others want her to be and finally figure out who she is and what she wants from her future,’ the insider said.

The source told DailyMail.com that the My Love Don’t Cost A Thing star isn’t the only one capable of playing mind games.

Explaining Ben’s take-the-high-road approach, the insider said: ‘Jennifer said she was tired of being humiliated by Ben and she waited until the two year anniversary because she wanted to sting.

‘But it did not sting him. He’s been done for a long time and deep down she knows this. He let her have this so that she wouldn’t look like the villain.’

The couple first sparked separation rumors when they had gone 47 days without being seen together.

In recent months, however, the pair have been spotted out together on a handful of occasions — but notably all were when Ben’s kids were present — as they had reportedly been trying to rekindle their romance.

Sunrise interview with Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin breached marketing code

Sunrise sports reporter Mark Beretta’s chat with AFL star Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin over beers last month has been found to be in breach of the alcohol marketing code.

On Friday July 5, Beretta, 58, and Franklin, 37, had a chat on Sunrise about his new ambassadorship position for Hahn Ultra Zero Carb beer, in which Buddy promoted the drink.

‘It’s zero carbs, I think that’s important! If you like to have a beer every now and then I think having zero carbs is really important,’ Franklin told Beretta.

‘It’s beautiful, smooth and nice and great to have one at 12:30pm,’ he added, before toasting his drink with Mark as they both took a sip of the sponsored alcohol.

The segment also prominently displayed the logo of the alcohol brand, as Franklin discussed what a great drink it was for people.

Upset viewers were quick to complain that they felt the interview, which was arranged by beverage giant Lion’s PR agency Thinkerbell, was just a thinly veiled alcohol promotion.

Further, the interview aired at 7:50am, at a time children might be watching.

The Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code Scheme panel ruled that while Lion had no editorial control over the segment, it was nevertheless arranged to promote the brand.

On Friday July 5, Beretta, 58, and Franklin, 37, had a chat on Sunrise about his new ambassadorship position for Hahn Ultra Zero Carb beer, in which Buddy promoted the drink

‘It had the full intention of advancing Mr Franklin’s role as its product brand ambassador,’ they began.

‘It supplied the product shown and consumed in the interview and supplied the promotional video obviously hoping and reasonably expecting it might be used.’

Their findings were that the interview breached time of day restrictions for alcohol marketing on linear free-to-air TV.

Channel Seven addressed the findings in a statement: ‘The segment in question was an editorial interview, not paid content, and was filmed at 12.30pm the day before.

‘Sunrise is a news, public affairs and entertainment program aimed at an adult audience. Seven Network was not privy to the ABAC investigation.’

It comes after Franklin came under criticism for his new partnership with brewery Hahn.

The former AFL star, who retired last July, has signed on to be the face of Hahn’s latest campaign in a deal rumoured to be worth between $150 and $200,000.

However, he has received some backlash for partnering with the alcohol brand in what has been described as an ‘out of character’ move for the sportsman.

Insiders claimed the endorsement may suggest Buddy – who was on a $10million contract with the Sydney Swans before his retirement – needs the extra income.

Natalie Barr Expresses Hope for Higher Pay than New Co-Host Matt Shirvington as TV Veteran Feels ‘Stitched Up’ in Radio Interview

Natalie Barr has made a surprising admission about her feelings towards new Sunrise co-host Matt Shirvington.

Barr, 55, and Shirvington, 45, joined Mix94.5’s Pete & Kymba for an interview on Tuesday, and agreed to play a game with radio hosts.

However things became rather awkward when co-host Pete Curullli brought up Australia’s latest median gender pay gap data, which was this week published by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA).

‘The current median gender pay gap at the Seven Network is 13.8%,’ Curulli began.

‘Nat, how much extra money are you making than Shirvo?’ he added, sending Nat into fits of laughter.

Barr, who has served as Sunrise host since June 2020, finally replied: ‘Hopefully, a lot, as it should be.’

While Barr’s salary has never been revealed, it is believed she earns upwards of $1,000,000 a year for hosting Australia’s top breakfast TV show.

Shirvington joined the program in June 2023, replacing former Sunrise co-host David Koch, who was reportedly earning over $1.5million a year despite only working four days a week.
