28 Years Later drops a nail-biting trailer as fans hit with major curveball

The new trailer for Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s 28 Years Later has dropped, but Cillian Murphy was nowhere to be seen in major curveball despite the actor being ‘teased’ for a return.

Speculation has been rife about his role in the new movie after he starred as Jim in the 2002 sequel film 28 Days Later, well before he shot to Oscar success.

Last month, Danny teased that viewers may get to see Cillian, 48, return after all, in one of the films in the trilogy.

Speaking during Sony’s presentation at 2025 CinemaCon, the filmmaker hinted: ‘Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for [Cillian] to make his appearance’.

When the first trailer for the highly-anticipated film was released in December, fans went wild over one unexpected moment that saw a zombie rise up in a field behind Jodie Comer’s character.

The clip sparked worldwide speculation amongst fans, believing it to be the zombified form of Cillian’s character from the first film.

However, this theory was quickly shut down when a London art dealer and model revealed he was the one playing the zombie character.

Earlier this year, movie producer Andrew Macdonald confirmed that Cillian would not be appearing in 28 Years Later, but also suggested he could return for a future film.

He told Empire: ‘[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line.’

He added: ‘He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer, and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.’

The latest terrifying trailer for the new zombie horror landed on Thursday, as fans continue to speculate over when Cillian’s Jim will appear in the sequel.

The first film, which is set to hit cinemas this June, will star Jodie, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes.

In the trailer, the horror film follows a group of survivors of the Rage virus living on an isolated island, with their only connection to the mainland being a heavily guarded causeway.

As Jamie (Aaron) and his 12-year-old son, Spike (Alfie), head off to the mainland on a mission, they uncover horrifying truths about the virus’s evolution.

‘There are many kinds of death,’ Dr. Kelson (Ralph) says in the trailer. ‘And some are better than others.’

The film’s official synopsis reads: ‘Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, a terrifying new story set in the world created by 28 Days Later.

‘It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected.

‘One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway.

‘When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.’

The second film in the new trilogy, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Mia DaCosta and also written by Garland, has already filmed, with Taylor-Johnson and Jack O’Connell confirmed.

The third film is set for release in January next year, with Danny expected to return as the director.

28 Years Later hits UK cinemas on June 20, 2025.

One even branded it their ‘worst ticketing experience they’ve ever had, with others lashing out at theatres for the lack of general tickets as they noted that ‘members’ of the theatre had a better chance of bagging the coveted tickets.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter on Thursday, fans were quick to share their anger and frustration a the difficulty in securing tickets.

They penned: ‘Why is getting Prima Facie tickets one of the worst ticketing experiences I’ve ever had.’

‘Public booking was sold out by 10.05. It would appear that unless you are a member/ friend, there is virtually no chance of purchasing tickets . This doesn’t feel very equitable.’

‘Seems like the tens of thousands of people in the line for #primafacie tickets have managed to crash the Liverpool Playhouse’s website Good luck everyone even though it seems like a lost cause at this point.’

‘Trying again to buy a Prima Facie ticket Level: impossible 17 thousands? I’m a bit late’

‘No Prima Facie tickets for me then. Birmingham Rep, this is not ‘limited tickets’, this is zero tickets.’

‘Bring back old fashioned refreshing and good luck for tickets rather than queues with no hope.

‘Apparently, it’s impossible to get #PRIMAFACIE tickets unless you are a member and have access to the pre-sale. Birmingham sold out in under 10 mins. 1500 people in the queue the second tickets went on sale. Disappointing

‘not sure who is responsible (@LivEveryPlay or #primafacie or someone else) but how can you justify offering enough presale tickets to sell out a play before general sale goes live?’

Written by Suzie Miller, Prima Facie follows Tessa has as she finds herself questioning the legal system she has prized for so-long.

The synopsis reads: ‘Tessa is a thoroughbred. A young, brilliant barrister who loves to win.

She has worked her way up from working class origins to be at the top of her game; prosecuting; cross examining and lighting up the shadows of doubt in any case.

‘An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge.’

Speaking ahead of the tour, Jodie previously said: ‘It is a huge privilege to return to Prima Facie for one last time and take this important play on tour across the UK and Ireland. The resonance of Suzie Miller’s writing, both in London and New York, exceeded anything we could have imagined.

‘I’m so thrilled to have the opportunity to get the team back together and take the production to theatres around the country, including my hometown of Liverpool.’

Miller added: ‘I couldn’t be more thrilled about the Prima Facie 2026 tour; this play has already achieved more than we all could have dreamed, and Jodie’s commitment to the story reaching so many new venues and communities means more people can be part of the conversation, and the solution.’

Prima Facie’s tour is set to kick off on 24 January at the Richmond Theatre before finishing up in Jodie’s hometown of Liverpool, playing at the city’s Playhouse on 21 March.

While most films use cameras from German manufacturers ARRI Group, director Danny Boyle decided the first ’28’ film in 18 years needed something different.

28 Years Later concluded filming this summer – and principal photography took place with a bunch of adapted iPhone 15s, WIRED reported.

With a budget of $75million, 28 Years Later is the biggest film to be created with an iPhone and follows in the footsteps of a new Apple TV show.

28 Days Later was a genre-defining film as it was the first to portray zombies as lightning fast rather than slow and sluggish.

The films take place 28 days, weeks, and years after the outbreak of a deadly virus in London, which infects everyone and turns them into bloodthirsty killers.

Anthony Dod Mantle will serve as 28 Years Later’s cinematographer – he and Danny won Oscars together in 2009 for their work on Slumdog Millionaire.

Anthony was also cinematographer on 28 Days Later, as well as Danny’s other films 127 Hours (2010), Trance (2013), and T2 Trainspotting (2017).

Principal filming for 28 Years Later wrapped at the end of August, and until now the production has kept under wraps the fact that the movie was shot with smartphones, with the film’s staff being asked to signed NDAs preventing the disclosure of this detail.

As she was interviewed by Harper’s Bazaar ahead of the event, Victoria admitted she no longer cares about being a celebrity after turning 50 as she passes the baton to her daughter Harper.

The fashion designer discussed how she has navigated being in the public eye since she soared to stardom as part of the Spice Girls in the nineties.

Speaking about protecting her privacy, she said: ‘You have to go through those times to make you, ultimately, who you are. We’ve kind of figured out how to be quite discreet, which is just how we want to conduct our lives right now.

‘I suppose it used to be fun to go out and be chased by paparazzi walking down Bond Street – and you would dress knowing you were going to get that. I don’t want that any more.’

‘I’ve been doing this too long. I suppose I did when I was growing up but, nowadays, there’s just too much going on; too busy; too many kids to worry about. I woke up at 50, and I gave a s*** less.’

Harper has already made it known she wants to follow in the footsteps of her fashion designer mother and hopes to create an ‘amazing brand’ when she’s older.

And it appears her famous parents are edging her one step closer by setting up a business to funnel any future earnings for the rising star.

Discussing Harper’s upcoming appearance in her new Netflix documentary, she said: ‘It’s slightly more targeted on the entrepreneur, the designer of the brand. It’s not going to be as personal. I realise that I am a bit of a travelling circus, even when I’m at work, but this is very fashion-focused.

‘And, obviously, there’ll be elements of the kids, you know – Harper’s going to come in on Monday and do her fitting for the show.

‘So they’ll film that. But it’s really shining a light on the business, especially for America. That’s the main reason for doing this.’

They remain in touch to this day and regularly post pictures together on social media, whether attending Ascot or sipping cocktails together, keeping in touch amid their very busy schedules with a cheekily-named WhatsApp group dubbed: ‘H*s in Different Area Codes’.

The event comes as a break to Jodie who has been busy filming 28 Years Later in Northumberland.

Back in April she was announced to be starring in the second sequel to the 2002 film which is once again directed by Danny Boyle.

Reprising his role from the first movie, Oscar-winning Cillian Murphy will return as Jim, joined by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Erin Kellyman and Jack O’Connell.

Jodie, who will play a Geordie character in the post-apocalyptic flick, was spotted filming in the Northumberland countryside in July.

She recently revealed she had been taking inspiration from Girls Aloud star Cheryl for her Newcastle accent.

According to an interview with ELLE UK, Jodie has been looking back at old episodes of Cheryl on The X Factor to master the twang.

Talking about her role in the upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film and getting to work with Danny Boyle, Jodie commented: ‘Danny just seems like such a confident, intuitive and intelligent director.

‘The original was so loved, so I’m trying not to think of that too hard. I’m not putting too much expectation on myself.’

The original zombie apocalyptic film debuted in cinemas 22 years earlier in 2002 – with Cillian taking on a leading role.

The sequel is slated to be the third instalment in the franchise and the first in an upcoming trilogy.

Danny, who directed 28 Days later, as well as original writer, Alex Garland, are also returning. The pair notably only served as executive producers on the second movie, 28 Weeks Later (2007).

Both Danny and Alex are producing the new project alongside Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice and Bernie Bellew, while Cillian is an executive producer.

While talking to The Independent earlier this year in January, Cillian revealed if he would possibly star in the franchise once again.

This marks Jodie’s second apocalyptic film in recent years, after her heart wrenching performance in the climate crisis drama The End We Start From.

She starred as Mother in the movie adaptation of Megan Hunter’s novel which sees her character navigating motherhood for the first time during an apocalyptic flood.

She revealed that she was terrified when she began filming as she had to work with 15 different babies on set.

She told the BBC: ‘I started this process quite literally terrified. My hands were visibly shaking when I met an eight-week-old on set. I was like, “Oh my god, what have I done?”

‘It’s one thing to act and think about everything else, but then actually being conscious of this precious little being and making sure that they’re safe.’

Jodie said she felt that during the process, she followed the arc of her character – as both herself and Mother began overwhelmed by motherhood but later settled in.

Jodie Foster’s Trauma After Reagan Shooting

More than four decades after John Hinckley Jr. tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan, Jodie Foster revealed how that event resulted in her never doing another play ever again.

Hinckley Jr. admitted at his trial that he was obsessed with Foster, 61, after seeing her playing a teenage prostitute in the 1976 classic Taxi Driver.

He also admitted that the assassination attempt was carried out in hopes of impressing Foster, stating it was, ‘the greatest love offering in the history of the world.’

The actress opened up in an interview with another famous Jodie – Jodie Comer – for Interview Magazine – where she talked about how the assassination attempt ultimately ended her career in theater.

‘I’m finally able to admit that the one bit of theater I did when I was in college, there was so much trauma involved in it—well, just quickly, the play happened in two weekends, and I did the first weekend, and in between the first weekend and the second weekend, John Hinckley shot the president,’ Foster began.

‘It was a huge moment. It was a long time ago. You probably don’t even know, but he shot him in order to impress me, and he had written letters to me, so it was a big moment in my life,’ Foster added.

‘The world fell apart, there were Secret Service people everywhere, I had bodyguards, and I had to be taken to a safe house,’ she detailed.

‘I was in the middle of these two weekends of this play, and I had the dumb idea of “the show must go on.” So I was like, “I have to do that second weekend,”‘ she said.

She added that during that second weekend, there was a rather scary incident that ultimately traumatized her enough to swear off theater for life.

‘Yeah, I’d just turned 18. There were people everywhere, cameras everywhere, and there was a guy in the front row, and I had noticed that it was the second night that he’d been there, and I decided to, the whole play, yell, “F**k you, motherf***er!” I just decided that I was going to use this guy,’ she said.

‘And then the next day, it was revealed that this particular guy had a gun, and he had brought it to the performance, and then he was on the run, and I was in a class, and the bodyguard guy came and threw me onto the ground while I was in the class, which was really embarrassing, because there were only 10 people there,’ Foster said.

She added, ‘It was a traumatic moment, and I’ve never admitted that maybe that has something to do with how I never wanted to do a play again.’

Foster admitted she ultimately, ‘talked myself into loving theater and going to theater, but somehow feeling like I couldn’t make that commitment to ever do it again.’

'It was a huge moment. It was a long time ago. You probably don’t even know, but he shot him in order to impress me, and he had written letters to me, so it was a big moment in my life,' Foster added

Comer – who has starred in plays on both London’s West End and on Broadway – asked if she could ‘sway’ Foster to going up on stage.

Foster joked, ‘I’ll be the first 80-year-old person to go onstage with my walker, perhaps.’

Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 1982, which changed the way the insanity defense was used, leading to the Insanity Defense Reform Act of 1984.

Hinckley was confined at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington D.C. after the trial, where he remained until 2016, where he was released with many stipulations.
