Superman director James Gunn defends ‘goofy’ new clip after it was mocked by fans sparking frenzy of memes

Superman director James Gunn defended a new promotional clip from the film, after the footage was mocked by fans and sparked a frenzy of internet memes.

Gunn, 58, responded to fans after sharing a new 30-second clip to his X account on Monday, which showed the Man of Steel, played by David Corenswet, 31, flying through a frozen tundra.

Many commented on the look of Corenswet’s eyes, with some noting they appeared disproportionately large and far apart and calling the shot ‘goofy.’

‘There’s something with his face that looks a little off. I know there’s plenty of time to refine the CG,’ one fan commented.

Gunn responded to the comment, assuring fans there was no computer-generated imagery on the actor’s face.

‘There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard [Norway] is 100% real as is David.’

‘We can tell,’ one snarky comment read in response to Gunn’s claims.

‘I believe him,’ another one added.

The clip sparked a frenzy of memes, with fans photoshopping different faces onto Superman, including Steve Buscemi’s Mr. Deeds character, Marty Feldman’s Igor from Young Frankenstein, Mr. Bean, Crazy Eyes and other googly-eyed characters.

There were also many fans loyal to Henry Cavill’s Superman portrayal, with one posting a side-by-side comparison and writing, ‘The downgrade is insane.’

‘Please fix his eyes. There’s still time to edit,’ one fan pleaded.

‘Seriously? He looks terribly computer-animated at the end! I really love Cavill’s Superman, and I was genuinely excited to see the film after the first trailer. But this completely pulls me out of it – I feel so let down right now. @jamesgunn, please tell me this is not the final version of the shot! Superman.’

‘Why does Superman have a lazy eye?’ another asked with laughing emojis.

    ‘Goofy, cheap and cross eyed.’

Fans questioned the look of Superman's eyes, and whether computer-generated imagery was used. Gunn responded: 'There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard [Norway] is 100% real as is David'

David Lynch tributes: Ron Howard, James Gunn and others remember Twin Peaks director after his death aged 78

Celebrities including Ron Howard and James Gunn have paid tribute to Hollywood icon David Lynch following his death aged 78.

The four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s family announced the devastating news via social media on Thursday.

Famous for directing his iconic TV series Twin Peaks and the film Blue Velvet, Lynch had recently been battling ill health and was homebound due to emphysema.

In a post, shared on Facebook, his loved ones wrote: ‘It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch.’

‘We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us.’

‘But, as he would say, “Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.” ‘It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way,’ they concluded.

Happy Days icon and director Ron Howard wrote: ‘#RIPDavidLynch, a gracious man and fearless artist who followed his heart & soul and proved that radical experimentation could yield unforgettable cinema.’

DC Studios boss James Gunn penned: ‘RIP David Lynch. You inspired so many of us.’

Mulholland Drive actress Lee Grant reminisced on her time on the acclaimed 2001 film, writing: ‘In the early 90s the production manager of a film I was working on built part of our shooting schedule around the broadcast of a TV show the crew refused to miss. The show was Twin Peaks. I became fascinated by David Lynch’s dreamscapes along with everyone else on the film.

‘Years later, when offered the chance to work with him for a day, I jumped at the opportunity to see how a mind like that directed. It was a day on Mulholland Drive. He was, in actuality, a one of a kind artist.’

Patton Oswalt, who has previously cited Lynch’s 1977 film Eraserhead as one of his defining movies, wrote: ‘David Lynch, RIP. At least that’s what the horse wearing a fez just told me* in a dream. (*Backwards and in Swedish).’

Director Jason Zada wrote: ‘David Lynch was such a huge inspiration for me when I was growing up. I remember seeing Eraserhead on VHS and watching it over and over.

‘His films, his voice, his TV show Twin Peaks shaped me when I was starting out. He was a fearless director, a visionary, and an icon. Rest in weird peace, Mr. Lynch.’

Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine remembered Lynch to IndieWire, saying, ‘David Lynch was one of our great artists, a Mount Rushmore-level director, truly a GOAT. He changed a lot of people’s lives. There will never be another one like him, because he made films at a point in history where nothing like that had ever been experienced before.

‘We live in a time where everything has been seen. Lynch invented a new language. He was a once in a generation talent who absorbed the embers of America’s wildness.

‘He embraced his own inner logic and filtered it through a subconscious magic. He created worlds and unmatched vibrations. He hit on things that were inexplicable and sacred and beyond articulation. He is a treasure. His work will live forever.’

Lynch is survived by his wife Emily Stofle, and three children Jennifer Lynch, Austin Jack Lynch, and Riley Lynch.

In an interview with Sight & Sound in August, Lynch said that he got the disease ‘for smoking so long.’

Lynch said: ‘I’m homebound whether I like it or not. I can’t go out. And I can only walk a short distance before I’m out of oxygen.’

The director of Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks got real as he said his love of cigarettes put him in this position.

Lynch said: ‘Smoking was something that I absolutely loved, but in the end, it bit me.

‘It was part of the art life for me: the tobacco and the smell of it, and lighting things and smoking and going back and sitting back and having a smoke and looking at your work, or thinking about things.

‘Nothing like it in this world is so beautiful. Meanwhile, it’s killing me. So I had to quit.’

Though his disease has prevented him from working on projects in person, he is not completely ruling out the possibility of directing in the future.

He said: ‘I like to be amongst the things and get ideas there. But I would try to do it remotely, if it comes to it.’

Lynch was referencing his animated project – called Snootworld – which was pitched and ultimately passed on by Netflix.

In November, he told People that he required supplemental oxygen for most activities and could ‘hardly walk across a room.’

‘It’s like you’re walking around with a plastic bag around your head,’ he said of his battle with emphysema.

Despite not having any regrets, Lynch hopes his devastating health update will encourage other smokers to quit.

He also told the outlet: ‘Think about it. You can quit these things that are going to end up killing you.’

Lynch admitted there had been a ‘big price to pay’ for his lifelong habit but said he didn’t regret it.

By the time he gave up cigarettes the father-of-four could ‘hardly move without gasping for air.’

‘Quitting was my only choice,’ he said.

His most recent major project before his health issues was the revival of his series Twin Peaks for Showtime in 2017.

The original series had ran from 1990 to 1991 as it followed the investigation into the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer (played by Sheryl Lee) as it took place in the fictional town of Twin Peaks, Washington.

When it first aired in the early 1990s the series had developed a cult following after its run on ABC which later resulted in the 1992 prequel feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk.

In the documentary Glenn Close recounts how Reeve was ‘terrified that he could die at any moment’ after his accident and how his close friendship with Robin Williams gave his strength.

Close said: ‘I’ve always thought if Chris was still around, then Robin would still be alive.’

As is common for stars connected to the Superman universe, Kirk also made a cameo appearance years later – playing Lois Lane’s father alongside Noel as her mother in 1978’s Superman, starring Christopher Reeve.

Kirk was hired by Columbia Pictures because he resembled Clark Kent but later blamed his success as the character and his superhero alter-ego for ruining his acting career.

However, he benefited from a wave of nostalgia for the franchise in the 1970s, which saw him grace comic book conventions to meet eager fans.

According to reports, he said in 1972: ‘Playing Superman ruined my acting career and I’ve been bitter for many years about the whole thing. But now, it’s finally starting to pay off.’

‘We literally had a sit down where we talked about the show and I asked about the suit and the tights and the flying, and they said, ‘No, absolutely not,’ part of the reason being is that show is about a teenager trying to figure out who he is.’

The only time Tom was seen in the red, blue and yellow was in the series finale, when he ripped open his shirt to reveal the House of El symbol on his chest.

Tom also revealed he turned down a chance to play Superman once again in Supergirl, but he did return to the role for a cameo scene in Arrowverse’s crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths.

‘I did my best to always remember that there was this great respect that needed to be paid but also not worry about whether I was going to be good enough, as that would have got in the way of my performance.

In 2016, Jude Law revealed that he turned down the chance to star as the titular character, making way for Brandon in Superman Returns.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be the second film in his DC Studios slate, according to The Hollywood Reporter

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on the 2021 eight-issue comic book mini-series of the same name by writer Tom King and artist Bliquis Evely.

That comic book series offers a much different type of origin story for Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman.

The story follows about Kara’s quest through space along her trusty companion Krypto the Superdog, and is said to be far different from the CW Supergirl series.

The comics are told from the perspective of Ruthye, an alien girl who meet Kara and seeks justice for the death of her father.

When announcing the first films in his slate as DC Studios President back in January 2023, James Gunn teased a bit of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow story.

‘We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth,’ Gunn said.

Gunn also teased this, ‘is a very different type of Supergirl,’ adding she is, ‘much more hardcore,’ during the January announcement.

Sasha Calle had most recently played Supergirl in The Flash, though that film was produced under the previous regime before Gunn and Peter Safran took over.

While there will be some characters from the previous regime returning such as Xolo Mariduena as Blue Beetle and John Cena as The Peacemaker, most other characters will be re-cast, like David Corenswet taking over Superman following Henry Cavill.

When Alcock was cast as Kara Zor-El back in January, there was speculation that she could have a cameo as Supergirl in Gunn’s new Superman, though that has not been confirmed.

Now with the 2026 release date confirmed, and shooting set for this fall – with Superman production starting in late February and expected to run until early August – it’s possible Alcock may film a cameo and be introduced in Superman.

‘I don’t pretend to know every chapter of Ray’s heart, but I know it’s unusual to encounter someone with that level of artistry, who simultaneously moved through the world with such an indelible humanity.

‘He built worlds from scratch and did so in the most collaborative and inclusive ways.

‘Ray was peerless. He’ll be missed by so many, but most of all his family. The last time I saw Ray was exactly two weeks ago. One of the last things

While production is still under way on his new Superman movie, director James Gunn is pulling double duty, directing new episodes of his Peacemaker series.

Filming got under way on Superman on February 29 – Leap Day and also Superman’s actual birthday in the DC Comics – with shooting expected to continue until August.

Gunn took to Threads on Saturday, sharing the first photo from the first day of Season 2 filming, confirming he’s directing the first episode.

Many fans asked how he’s going to work on Peacemaker when Superman is still filming, which he had an answer for.

‘It’s a Saturday. Pre-shoot,’ Gunn said, indicating that Saturday is a day off from the Superman production, which he used to start filming on Peacemaker.

Another fan mentioned that Gunn was slated to write all eight episodes though there will be other directors on board for Season 2.

Gunn responded, ‘I’ll be directing some of the episodes (I’m directing today). But there are three other great directors joining me for the season.’

Season 1 of Peacemaker – which saw John Cena reprising his role from Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad – debuted in January 2022, picking up where the film left off.

Max announced in February 2022 that the streaming service had renewed the show for Season 2, also revealing that Gunn would write and direct all eight episodes.

However, just eight months later, Gunn and Peter Safran would be named as the new heads of DC Studios, making a new Superman movie his top priority for the studio.

Last month, Gunn confirmed on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast Inside of You that Peacemaker is in fact returning right after Superman.

When Rosenbaum asked if there was just ‘no time’ for Peacemaker, Gunn stated, ‘No, Peacemaker‘s coming back right after Superman. That’s my next thing. I’ll go straight from Superman to Peacemaker.’

Gunn would later confirm on Threads that both Superman and Peacemaker will be in production at the same time.

‘Yes, we’ll be shooting Superman & Peacemaker simultaneously; yes, I’ve written all the episodes; but, no, in the interest of getting the show out there I won’t be able to direct them all (only some),’ Gunn clarified.

Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker’s first season and directed five of the episodes, with Brad Anderson, Jody Hill and Rosemary Rodriguez directing the other three episodes.

Cena stars as the title character alongside Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Chukwudi Iwuji, Steve Agee and Robert Patrick.

No plot details or new additions to the cast for Season 2 have been revealed quite yet, and it’s unclear when it may debut on Max.

Release Date Announced for The Naked Gun Reboot Starring Liam Neeson in Iconic Role

A reboot of The Naked Gun, which has been in the works for a number of years, finally has a release date.

On Friday Paramount Pictures announced the still untitled comedy cop film, starring Liam Neeson in the role of the incompetent police officer Frank Drebin, will hit theaters July 15, 2025, according to a number of publication that includes Variety.

The new movie will be based off the popular Naked Gun film franchise and television series Police Squad! created by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker that starred the late great Leslie Nielsen.

Akiva Schaffer, who co-wrote the draft screenplay with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, will serve as the director and executive producer. The trio had previously worked together on the live-action and animation hybrid Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022).

Schaffer, Dan Gregor and Doug Mand wrote an updated draft of the script from the previous draft that had contributions from Seth MacFarlane, Mark Hentemann and Alec Sulkin.

Neeson takes over the role of Lieutenant Frank Drebin from the late actor Leslie Nielson, who starred in the original series the franchise is based on, Police Squad! (1982), and the three films (1988-1994) that were all hits at the box office

So far, little is known about the story for the reboot, but it’s likely the famed team of writers will cleverly incorporate the ‘very particular set of skills’ Neeson has acquired while playing his action hero persona of recent years, including Bryan Mills in the Taken (2008-2014) franchise.

While fan will have to remain patient to see exactly how far filmmakers will go in lampooning Neeson’s own action man image, he takes over for Nielsen, an acclaimed actor and comedian who passed away in November 2010 at the age of 84.

The Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada native had a career spanning 60 years, dating back to 1950, during which he appeared in more than 100 films and 150 television programs, while portraying more than 220 characters.

Fans were first introduced to Nielsen as Franklin ‘Frank’ Drebin on the ABC crime spoof-comedy television series Police Squad! (1982).

Parodying police procedurals, the series featured the use of sight gags, wordplay and over-the-top comedic humor during its one season run.

Although the show was canceled after just six episodes, it would be followed up by the wildly successful film series six years later, with Nielsen back as Lieutenant Frank Drebin, and Priscilla Presley, George Kennedy and OJ Simpson in supporting roles in all three films.

Receiving critical acclaim upon its release, The Naked Gun: From the Files Of Police Squad! (1988) went on to become a big commercial hit as well, grossing $152.4 million against budget of just $12 million.

David Zucker served as the director and co-writer while working on the script with Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Pat Proft.
