Denzel Washington DEFENDS $900 tickets to see him on Broadway amid Beyonce comparisons and fan backlash

Denzel Washington is weighing in on the outrageous prices for tickets to see him star in Othello on Broadway — and he doesn’t have a problem with the triple-digit costs.

Fans looking to catch the Oscar-winning star and his costar Jake Gyllenhaal in Shakespeare’s tragedy have been dealing with major sticker shock after seeing prices as high as $900.

While speaking to DailyMail.com last month, Othello’s director Kenny Leon went as far as to compare the inflated prices to those of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour.

The 70-year-old stage and screen star seemed to wave away the eye-popping prices by noting that a few lucky audience members at the Barrymore Theatre could snatch tickets that were considerably cheaper.

‘[They’re selling] as low as $50. People don’t talk about that,’ Washington said while chatting with Entertainment Weekly.

However, those cheap tickets — at least by Broadway standards — aren’t easily accessible to most theatergoers.

According to the Othello production’s website, the only way to get tickets for $49 each — ‘fees included’ — is to enter a digital lottery system that opens at 12 a.m. ET on the day before the performance.

The winners are then alerted and given the opportunity to purchase those significantly discounted tickets at 10 a.m. the day before.

But it’s unclear exactly how many lottery winners there are per show, and anyone traveling to New York City with hopes of seeing Washington and Gyllenhaal performing Shakespeare won’t want to take the chance.

Students with valid IDs also have the option to get the cheaper tickets on the day of, but the supply is likely limited.

Tickets made available after buyers have to cancel are also a cheaper option, though they tend to be multiple times more expensive than the $50 tickets, even though they’re a steal compared to $900 tickets.

As of Tuesday evening, most upcoming Othello performances are sold out or only have one or two available seats.

The cheapest regular ticket options appear to be over $600, while more expensive tickets cost as much as $921.

According to the Broadway League’s 2023–2024 demographics report, the average Broadway ticket price was $125.27, though with inflated fees the actual average cost rose to $154.70.

However, critics have lately derided the massively inflated prices for a recent spate of celebrity-driven shows on Broadway.

George Clooney recently joined the trend when he made his Broadway debut in Good Night, And Good Luck, which is adapted from the film of the same name that he directed and played a supporting role in.

Denzel’s costar Jake previously scored a hit on Broadway when he led a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical Sunday In The Park With George, which was a hit thanks to strong sales and high ticket prices.

The average ticket prices for Othello were previously reported to be $338 per ticket, though anything close to that price appears to be long gone, and the few ultra-cheap lottery tickets may provide an unrealistic picture of ticket prices by dragging down the average.

In the same interview, the Gladiator II star — whose recent injury threatened to derail his return to Broadway — laughed off comparisons to Beyoncé due to the play’s sky-high ticket costs.

‘I haven’t quite felt like that. I can’t sing or rap,’ he said with a laugh.

But Denzel also expressed his gratitude for the stellar reception the production of Othello has received.

‘I’m humbled by the reaction and the response that we’re getting, and I’m humbled by the opportunity to use my celebrity to help others. That’s what it’s about,’ he added.

In March, Othello director Kenny Leon defended the play’s astronomical ticket prices to DailyMail.com.

He said family’s would want to splurge when they saw Denzel and Jake and compared the experience to a family buying tickets to see Beyoncé on tour or getting ‘floor seats’ to see LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, those most people who see the Lakers aren’t necessarily able to afford such pricey prime locations.

‘So to me, with a commercial industry, people are paying what they think it’s worth. A guy showed up the other night and he said, “I paid $921 for this ticket and you know what? I don’t want a cent back. I want to figure out how to come back,”‘ he claimed.

‘That’s what I feel proud of every night. I have a 1,000 people in there and it’s so diverse,’ Leon continued. ‘I have young people, I have people that are all economic ranges. We have student tickets for this show. We have digital lotteries everyday.

‘I’m proud of the box office and I’m proud of what’s on the stage.’

Michelle Williams shades rival Oscar-winning film 20 years after Brokeback Mountain’s Best Picture loss

Michelle Williams still has hard feelings over Brokeback Mountain’s 2006 Best Picture Academy Award loss.

The 2005 drama starring her, Heath Ledger, and Jake Gyllenhaal lost the honor to Crash.

While appearing on Watch What Happens Live this week, host Andy Cohen said the movie is still one of his top two favorites.

‘I mean, what was Crash?’ the 44-year-old Dying For Sex star quipped when Cohen brought it up.

Cohen also asked if the Dawson’s Creek alum knew the impact Brokeback Mountain’s gay love story would have on audiences.

‘Yes, because people were so open about it,’ she said. ‘I remember doing the junket. You know, you don’t really get an opportunity to see a lot of grown men cry. That was the moment that I think that we all knew it was going to be special to people.’

The film collected eight total nominations at the 2006 Oscars, with Williams earning a Best Supporting Actress nod.

Meanwhile, Heath was nominated for Best Actor and Jake for Best Supporting Actor. Anne Hathaway also appeared in the Ang Lee-directed movie.

It went on to win Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score.

Michelle met and fell in love with Heath while shooting the memorable movie, and the two later welcomed daughter Matilda, who is now 19-years-old.

Heath tragically died in January 2008 after overdosing on a cocktail of drugs.

For Matilda’s 18th birthday in October 2023, she received a sentimental gift from the paternal side of her family.

The Ledgers gifted her Heath’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar, which he won posthumously for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Heath’s parents Kim and Sally Ledger and his older sister Kate accepted the trophy on his behalf during the 2009 Oscars.

Williams, who was in a relationship with Heath from 2004 to 2007 after meeting on the set of Brokeback Mountain, chose to raise Matilda away from the spotlight.

She moved to Upstate New York and said that the move came from her desire to provide ‘a sane home environment’ for her daughter.

She told the New York Post in June 2016: ‘We moved — we left Brooklyn and lived in the country for six years because it was an intolerable state of existence.’

Years later, Michelle returned to the city.

Maggie Gyllenhaal posed with her lookalike 18-year-old daughter Ramona in order to celebrate a career milestone in the family.

This past Sunday, Maggie’s brother Jake Gyllenhaal opened in a Broadway production of Othello, starring Denzel Washington as the title character.

Meanwhile Jake is featuring in the famously plum role of Iago, whose underhanded schemes set the stage for the tragic events of the Shakespeare classic.

Jake, 44, was surrounded by loved ones on opening night – such as Maggie, 47, her husband Peter Saarsgard, 54, and their daughters Ramona and Gloria, 12.

They all gathered together for a group shot that included Jake and Maggie’s mother Naomi, as well as Jake’s girlfriend Jeanne Cadieu, 44.

Amid the crowd of happy family members, Maggie and Ramona stood out for their heartwarming resemblance to one another.

Sunday marked a rare public showbiz event for Ramona and Gloria, though Maggie did take her eldest daughter to a Dior show at Paris Fashion Week in 2022.

The couple began their romantic relationship in 2002 and ultimately married in 2009, when their eldest daughter was two years old.

Denzel and Jake’s revival of Othello has smashed box office records on Broadway, earning $2.8 million just with its eight previews before it even officially opened.

Ticket prices are through the roof, with some audience members paying up to $1,000 to catch the two showbiz heavyweights on Broadway.

Director Kenny Leon defended the soaring costs to DailyMail.com, comparing the play to sitting courtside at a Laker game.

‘I love LeBron James. When we go to a basketball game, you get a floor seat. So to me, with a commercial industry, people are paying what they think it’s worth,’ he argued.

‘A guy showed up the other night and he said: “I paid $921 for this ticket and you know what? I don’t want a cent back. I want to figure out how to come back.”‘

A cavalcade of boldface names was in attendance at Sunday’s opening night of the Othello revival, including Jennifer Lopez, Samuel L. Jackson and Martha Stewart.

The current Broadway revival of Othello, which director Kenny Leon has placed in a contemporary setting, will run for only 15 weeks.

Maggie has spoken frankly about motherhood in the past, including the way that having Ramona changed her perception of other women with children.

‘I used to be judgmental of the way other people would parent,’ she told Scholastic Parent & Child in the August/September issue in 2020.

‘I would look at someone talking on a cell phone while her baby was asleep in a stroller and think: “How can that mother have her cell phone out?”‘ she recalled.

‘Then you actually have a baby and you’re like: “She’s sleeping; I have 10 minutes; I’ll make three phone calls,”‘ Maggie shared.

‘I think so much of my judgment – not only about how people parent, but about people in general – went away when I became a mom.’

Othello on Broadway held its star-studded opening night on Sunday where a red carpet situated in front of the Ethel Barrymore Theatre even featured a Steinway & Sons piano with a pianist playing welcoming music for attendees.

The Shakespearean play, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, has already broken the box office for becoming the top-grossing play, with a weekly gross of $2,818,297.

The ticket prices to see Othello cost more than $300 with some people having paid up to $1,000 to see the limited-engagement show.

Director Kenny Leon spoke to DailyMail.com on the red carpet on March 23 about the sky-rocketing prices.

‘I was talking to my niece earlier and she’s going to Beyoncé and she’s taking all my little ones. So I was like, “You’re taking the whole family,” he responded.

He then compared the ticket prices to sitting courtside at a Los Angeles Lakers game.

‘I’m proud of the box office and I’m proud of what’s on the stage.’

The Tony Award-winning director also defended casting Denzel Washington for the lead role after some critics claimed that Othello should be in his 40s.

‘I want to lean into the fact that Desdemona is 35-40 years younger than Othello. I want to find someone in their 20s to play against you,’ Kenny explained to DailyMail.com about casting Desdemona who is played by Molly Osborne, 27.

He added that the chemistry between Denzel and Molly is ‘perfect’ and that this cast in particular, among the 18 Broadway plays he’s worked on, ‘has really grown together.’

A critic from New York Post, for example, wrote, ‘What [Denzel] does not deliver is a fleshed-out, impassioned, fully compelling Othello. That Washington is 70 and his character is, at most, 40 is not disqualifying.

Director Kenny Leon told DailyMail.com that casting Denzel and Jake were his 'number ones' and that he didn't have any other actors in mind (pictured on the opening night, March 23)

‘However, the age gap between Washington and Molly Osborne’s decent Desdemona puts a roadblock in our quest to connect to them. Othello has an almost paternal energy with his wife that screams “be home by 10 p.m.” more than deadly lovers’ quarrel.’

Leon, 69, responded, ‘I don’t know what show they’re going to. Shakespeare is clearly 55-60 years old as written. Put it this way – when Shakespeare wrote it there is clearly a 40-year difference between Desdemona and Othello.

‘The whole idea was, “Is he too old or is he too black?” So people get it all confused. They get half information. Then they say, “Well, he’s supposed to be 30.”

‘No, he’s not. It’s supposed to be… they talk about how she’s a young white eel, he’s an old ram. He’s playing 58 or 60 years old. That’s the key to the story.

‘I always get frustrated when people writing about things… we clearly can’t do this play with a 14 year old girl. So then you age up.’

Casting Denzel, who Leon has worked with on three other projects in the past, and Jake, 44, were always his ‘number one,’ he insisted.

The Equalizer star was the one who got in touch with Leon about doing Othello.

‘He said, “Hey, I’m free in January 2025. What do you want to do?” We talked about three other plays, maybe four, and we easily landed on Othello.’

Leon had Jake in mind for playing Iago and all it took was ‘one call,’ he spilled, and then Jake said, ‘Let’s go to dinner.’

As for casting Molly, Osborne told DailyMail.com that she submitted a self tape as part of her audition since she was living in London.

Then a few weeks later, she met with Kenny, who flew to London, and then she nailed the job. While she did do a few Facetimes with Denzel, she didn’t meet him for the first time until rehearsals began.

The actress said that the chemistry between Jake and Denzel is ‘electric’ and that Othello and Iago ‘have their own love story in the play.’

Meanwhile, actress Kimber Elayne Sprawl was cast to play Iago’s wife, Emilia.

When she did a chemistry reading with Jake, she told DailyMail.com that she was ‘so nervous.’ ‘The whole time I’m like, “I hope he likes me. There has to be chemistry.”‘

She teases that there’s ‘some kissing’ and ‘a lot of love between Iago and Emilia.’

‘It’s obviously complicated love but she has a duty to her husband, she has a duty to Jake, and I feel like she loves him so much but she’s willing to risk it all for the truth,’ she revealed.

Kandi Burruss, a former cast member on the Real Housewives of Atlanta, and her husband Todd Tucker are co-producers for Othello, working in partnership with lead producer Brian Anthony Moreland.

The TV personality has been in talks with Denzel since last year when she worked on Netflix’s The Piano Lesson with his son John David Washington.

As her fourth Broadway production as a producer, she told DailyMail.com, ‘I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing. I did Housewives for 14 seasons and you want to grow and you want to do more.

While she added she ‘doesn’t see’ herself going back to RHOA, she said, ‘There are things I want to accomplish right now and I’m on a mission.’

She shared her thoughts on meeting Jake Gyllenhaal for the first time at the table read: ‘He was really really cool, real nice and laid back. My producing partner had already met him before I did so I was asking him, “So how is he? Is he nice? Is he cool?”

‘And he was really really cool. He was welcoming. He was very friendly to everybody in the room and I just thought it was great because when you’re meeting other talent, other artist – especially when they have a big resume – you’re not really sure if there’s gong to be ego involved but everyone came to the table read with no ego.’

Taylor Swift fans think resurfaced clip means she’s the cause of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds falling out

Taylor Swift’s most conspiratorial fans have come up with a possible explanation for the alleged falling out between her ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal and her longtime friend Ryan Reynolds.

The two A-list stars were once seemingly the best of pals after starring together in the 2017’s Life, and they described bonding together during the shooting of the sci-fi horror film.

But the two seemed to cool on each other rapidly, and now a recently resurfaced clip of Gyllenhaal’s icy response to questions about his friendship with Reynolds has ignited speculation among the 35-year-old singer’s fans that she may have been the cause of their reported rift.

Taylor and Jake famously dated in late 2010, but the relationship wasn’t long for the world, and they split sometime in early 2011.

In the E! News clip from the June 2019 premiere of Jake’s film Spider-Man: Far From Home, the 44-year-old actor is asked about his ongoing ‘feud’ with Ryan, 48, which at the time seemed to be purely for comedic effect.

‘Who?’ he asks after the Deapool star’s name is uttered.

When the correspondent asks him what it would take for the two to be ‘BFFs’ again,’ he offers a pained smile and pauses, before responding.

‘Well, I mean, in truth, there was a time in which we were [BFFs],’ Jake says in a surprisingly somber, wistful tone. ‘As everybody knows, Instagram had its way with our friendship.’

When Jake was asked if Deadpool or his Spider-Man villain would come out ahead in a competition, he simply said it was ‘unanswerable.’

‘I can’t do it,’ he added as he grinned slightly at the red-carpet correspondent.

The interview concluded with a request for a message to Ryan, but Jake responded in a surprisingly harsh tone.

‘I have nothing to say to him,’ he said in a staccato rhythm, before looking directly into the camera with an unsmiling face.

But the video faded out just as he turned back to the correspondent and began to smile at her, suggesting that the seemingly angry outburst was all for comic effect.

At the time, Jake and Ryan had signaled a falling out via seemingly joking Instagram posts from earlier in June 2019.

Since then, Ryan and Jake have had no public connections, while Taylor’s friendship with Ryan and his wife Blake Lively — as well as Hugh — seems to have only strengthened

They both posted photos of themselves with their mutual friend Hugh Jackman for National Best Friends Day, and in the caption wrote that their third amigo was ‘not pictured.’

The faux feud was something Ryan and Hugh were already well versed in, but fans came to suspect that it wasn’t as fake as it initially seemed after Ryan and Jake were rarely seen again together.

Hugh’s friendship with Jake also seemed to disappear from the public eye despite the two having reportedly been close for years after starring together in 2013’s Prisoners, even though he and Ryan continued to be friends.

In 2021, a source told OK! Magazine that the source of the alleged falling out was the competitive pressure of Hollywood, as ‘Things started cooling down once they realized they were competing for the same roles.’

They also claimed that Ryan’s marriage to Blake Lively and their three children — now four — had changed his priorities and made it difficult for him and the famous bachelor Jake to find as much common ground.

Following the seeming friendship split between Ryan and Jake, fans have noticed that Ryan, his wife Blake and Taylor all appeared to have unfollowed Jake on Instagram.

While the timeline of the social media feud is fuzzy, fans have alleged that three stars stopped following him first, while he continued to follow them.

However, Jake no longer follows any of them, signaling a significant split.

Fans have speculated after the video resurfaced that Taylor may have driven a wedge between Ryan and Jake due to her allegedly bad breakup with the Brokeback Mountain star; pictured in her video for Bet You Think About Me

On social media, some fans have speculated that, as Ryan and Blake’s friendship with Taylor strengthened, it would have been untenable for him to be seen liking the Brokeback Mountain star’s Instagram posts — ironically — because it might anger Taylor’s most overzealous fans.

Among the reasons that fans think Taylor’s friendship with Ryan could be related to his falling out with Jake is that Ryan’s wife Blake directed the video for the vault song I Bet You Think About Me, which was released on the rerecorded Red (Taylor’s Version) album.

The song, which featured a video featuring actor Miles Teller, is alleged by fans to be a kiss-off break-up song inspired by her split from Jake, though she has not confirmed as much.

Red also famously featured another break-up song, All Too Well, which is also believed by fans to be about her split from Jake, which preceded the recording of her massively popular album Red (2012).

That song took on a new life with the 2021 release of the rerecorded version of Red, which included a new 10-minute-long expanded version of All Too Well, though a rerecording of the previous shorter arrangement remained in the original track listing.

Taylor went on to perform the expanded version of the song on Saturday Night Live, and she made her filmmaking debut by directing a 15-minute short film doubling as a music video for the expanded version of All Too Well that starred Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, in addition to herself.

The short film didn’t do anything to dispel rumors that the original song was written about Taylor’s relationship with Jake, as Dylan bears a striking resemblance to the older actor and sported a beard similar to the one Gyllenhaal often wears between pictures.

He’s also several years older than Sadie, which seemingly mirrored the eight-year age gap between the original couple.

Taylor, Ryan and Blake reportedly all unfollowed Jake on Instagram, and fans have lately speculated that Ryan's stronger relationship with Taylor may have made following his alleged former friend untenable

In an interview with Esquire after the Red rerelease, Jake disputed any connection to All Too Well.

‘It has nothing to do with me,’ he said when asked about the song. ‘It’s about her relationship with her fans. It is her expression. Artists tap into personal experiences for inspiration, and I don’t begrudge anyone that.’

At the time, he turned off comments on his Instagram posts, after fans speculated that he would be receiving plenty of abuse coinciding with the new album.

‘At some point, I think it’s important when supporters get unruly that we feel a responsibility to have them be civil and not allow for cyberbullying in one’s name,’ Gyllenhaal said in the same interview. ‘That begs for a deeper philosophical question. Not about any individual, per se, but a conversation that allows us to examine how we can — or should, even — take responsibility for what we put into the world, our contributions into the world. How do we provoke a conversation? We see that in politics. There’s anger and divisiveness, and it’s literally life-threatening in the extreme.’

He added that he had never listened to Red (Taylor’s Version).

Denzel Washington, 70, reveals shocking injury that’s affecting his acting

Denzel Washington is crediting his faith in God for a recent accident not being worse than it was.

The Training Day star, 70, said he almost bit his tongue off recently and it’s affecting his work.

The Oscar winner is preparing to play Othello on Broadway opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and revealed his tongue is still swollen, making some of his lines hard to enunciate.

‘I have a line: “Whither will you that I go to answer this your charge?” It’s hard because my tongue is swollen,’ he told the New York Times. ‘It has affected everything.’

Nearly biting off his tongue also served as a moment for the Gladiator II star to reflect on his relationship with God.

‘That’s why you pray every day,’ he explained. ‘I’m like, “OK, Lord, I’m here, I think this is what you wanted me to do.”

‘Now I’m not sure why [I bit my tongue], but one can say coincidence and serendipity and all those things.’

The Remember the Titans actor didn’t elaborate on how he injured his tongue or if he received any medical treatment for it.

Washington was asked if he believed acting as a profession helped people and he again turned the conversation to God.

‘At this point, everything I’m doing is through the lens of what God thinks, not what they think. I don’t know what they think,’ he said.

‘You go down that hole, you’ll never come out of that. When people say, ‘What do you want people to get from this movie?’ or ‘What do you want them to get from this play?’ I always say, ‘It depends upon what they bring to it.’

‘There’s some interesting themes [in Othello] of jealousy and envy and pain and death.

He added: ‘And Kenny [Leon], the brilliant director, he’s putting it in what he calls the near future.

‘So all of those things – jealousy, envy – it takes on a whole new thing with the information age.’

In the New York Times article Denzel also spoke about a prophecy about him.

‘It was prophesied in my youth that I would travel the world and preach or speak to millions of people,’ he said.

‘I used to think that I was doing that through my work. Now I’m trying to be a bit more specific, speaking about my faith.’

He said it started in 1975 when he had flunked out of college and was not sure what to do with his life.

‘Well, a woman was sitting in my mother’s beauty shop in March 1975,’ he began.

‘The reason I was in there was I had flunked out of college – I was told to take a semester off to think about what I wanted to do.

‘And every time I looked up, I saw this woman looking at me, and she said she was having a prophecy,’ Washington explained.

‘She didn’t say anything about me being an actor, but I have traveled the world, and I am speaking more and more.’

Denzel just re-found his faith last year and got baptized in December, just ahead of his 70th birthday.

The Mount Vernon, New York-born actor was supported by his spouse of more than four decades, Pauletta Washington, 74, at his baptism.

After his baptism, Washington said, ‘It took a while, but I’m finally here, if [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you – the sky literally is the limit.’

Jake Gyllenhaal, 44, and girlfriend Jeanne Cadieu, 28, enjoy sushi date after rare red carpet appearance

Jake Gyllenhaal and his girlfriend, French model Jeanne Cadieu, were spotted enjoying a date night in Los Angeles this Tuesday.

Their venue of choice was Sushi Park, a West Hollywood hot spot that has become a favorite of celebrities like Justin and Hailey Bieber.

That day, Los Angeles was struck by its worst windstorms in over a decade, fueling fires that tore through the Pacific Palisades and forced tens of thousands to evacuate.

West Hollywood was threatened by a separate blaze over the Sunset Strip that firefighters were reportedly able to contain by noon, per the local WeHo Times.

As a result, by evening, Jake, 44, and Jeanne, 28, were able to proceed safely with their dinner date in the fashionable neighborhood.

They were both casually dressed for their night out, he wearing a seasonable tan anorak to ward off the midwinter chill.

Meanwhile Jeanne, who was born and raised in Paris, lived up to her hometown’s stylish reputation in an elegant evening ensemble.

She opted for a white mock turtleneck under a green cardigan with brass buttons, worn with a a sleek black jacket and matching trousers.

Although she grew up in the French capital, Jeanne now predominantly lives in New York City where she works as a professional model.

Her latest date night with Jake comes after they made a rare red carpet appearance together at the Golden Globe Awards this past Sunday.

Although they have been romantically linked to one another since 2018, they have only infrequently walked the red carpet together.

Last weekend was one of those occasions, as the pair radiated showbiz glamour while posing for the cameras at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Jeanne flashed one of her vertiginous legs in a tuxedo-style wrap dress as Jake wore a suit without a tie, leaving his top buttons tantalizingly open over his chest.

Jake was nominated that evening for best actor in a drama TV series, thanks to his performance as a prosecutor turned murder suspect in Presumed Innocent.

Although Jake and Jeanne rarely discuss their relationship in public, he showered praise on her in a 2022 profile for Esquire.

‘In a lot of ways, we’re family. I’m in a relationship that is full of love and support. I feel so at ease,’ said the ex-boyfriend of Taylor Swift.

The following year, he also vaunted his ‘wonderful’ girlfriend while promoting his children’s book The Secret Society Of Aunts And Uncles.

‘I would love to have a family, and if it’s anything like the family that my sister’s raised and has cultivated, I would be proud,’ he stated.

Jake’s sister Maggie Gyllenhaal is married to The Man In The Iron Mask actor Peter Sarsgaard, with whom she shares her children Ramona, 18, and Gloria, 12.

All three are up for prizes for the Golden Globes, set for January 5, which are widely seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards.

Smash hit Wicked, the movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, earned four nominations, including one apiece for pop sensation Grande and Tony award winner Erivo.

Grande – earning her first ever Golden Globe nomination – features in the category for Best Supporting Female Actor – Motion Picture, courtesy of her role as Galinda Upland in the fantasy drama.

The versatile star will compete alongside close friend Selena Gomez for her role in Emilia Perez, and Margaret Qualley, who won universally positive reviews for body shock horror The Substance.

Isabella Rossellini also features for her role in Concave, as does Zoe Saldana – again, for Emilia Perez.

Ahead of the nominations, Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis suggested organisers should save the last three categories of the night for comedy-musical honours, especially lead actress, which he called “the bloodbath category.”

He could be right, with Erivo, Emilia Perez star Karla Sofia Gascon and Anora star Mikey Madison battling for the lead actress prize with perennial awards favorite Amy Adams for Nightb***h. Demi Moore for The Substance and Challengers star Zendaya.

Wicked also receives a nod for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement with hit films Deadpool & Wolverine, Twisters, Inside Out 2, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and the surprisingly overlooked Gladiator II.

Taylor Swift sings Joe Jonas breakup medley and sends fans into frenzy: ‘Sophie Turner’s special request’

Taylor Swift sent her fans into a frenzy by singing a medley of her breakup songs about Joe Jonas during her Eras Tour concert in Toronto on Thursday.

Joe was the first public boyfriend Taylor had, starting off a series of celebrity liaisons including Jake Gyllenhaal, Calvin Harris, Tom Hiddleston and now Travis Kelce.

She and Joe began dating in July 2008 when they were both 18, but three months later he infamously broke up with her on a phone call she claims lasted 27 seconds.

In the years since, Taylor, 34, and Joe, 35, managed to strike up an amicable rapport and he eventually tied the knot with Game Of Thrones star Sophie Turner.

Last year, however, Joe’s marriage fell apart – and Sophie was then repeatedly seen out with Taylor as the two women cultivated a blossoming friendship.

Now, at the latest concert of her juggernaut tour, Taylor has sung a mashup of two of her songs about Joe – Better Than Revenge and Mr. Perfectly Fine.

Taylor Swift sent her fans into a frenzy by singing a medley of her breakup songs about Joe Jonas during her concert in Toronto on Thursday; Taylor pictured in Toronto last week

Better Than Revenge was included on the original version of Taylor’s 2011 record Speak Now and was thought to be a jab at Joe’s romance with Camilla Belle.

‘Soon she’s gonna find, stealing other people’s toys on the playground won’t make you many friends,’ Taylor sneers in the song. ‘She should keep in mind, she should keep in mind, there is nothing I do better than revenge.’

Meanwhile Mr. Perfectly Fine was written for her 2008 album Fearless, which was released just two months after her split from Joe.

The song never made it into the original Fearless record, but when she re-recorded a ‘Taylor’s Version’ of the album amid her feud with music mogul Scooter Braun over her masters, Mr. Perfectly Fine saw the light of day at last.

‘Hello Mr. Perfectly Fine, how’s your heart after breaking mine?’ she sings bitterly on the track. ‘Mr.  Always At The Right Place At The Right Time, baby. Hello Mr. Casually Cruel, Mr. Everything Revolves Around You. I’ve been Miss Misery since your goodbye, and you’re Mr. Perfectly Fine.’

When Taylor performed her medley of the two numbers this Thursday, news quickly spread on social media and set fans’ tongues wagging.

One joked that ‘somewhere in New Jersey Joe Jonas is waking up in a cold sweat and Sophie Turner smiles!!!’ as another deadpanned: ‘joe jonas found dead’ and a third quipped that the mashup was ‘Sophie Turner’s special request.’

Taylor was hailed for having done ‘the funniest thing,’ while one user of X, formerly Twitter, cracked: ‘joe jonas just felt a sharp pain at the back of his neck.’

When Taylor performed her medley of the two numbers this Thursday, news quickly spread on social media and set fans’ tongues wagging

‘She really said it’s time to have a whole stadium shut on Mr. Joe Jonas,’ one observer remarked with a crying laughing emoji.

‘Joe Jonas was cooked by Taylor tonight. Is that what the kids say?’ vamped an X user as another chortled: ‘She just flipped off Joe Jonas from toronto lol.’

The month after Taylor and Joe broke up, she went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and slated him for his method of ending the relationship.

‘Someday I’m going to find someone really great for me… When I find that person that is right for me, he’ll be wonderful,’ Taylor began.

‘And when I look at that person, I’m not even going to be able to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18. It was a record, I think. I looked at the call log. It was like 27 seconds.’

Joe retorted by telling his own side of the story on his MySpace page, insisting that he was not the person who cut the call short.

‘For those who have expressed concern over the “27 second” phone call, I called to discuss feelings with the other person,’ he wrote. ‘Those feelings were obviously not well received. I did not end the conversation. Someone else did. Phone calls can only last as long as the person on the other end of the line is willing to talk.’

Joe and Sophie married in April Fool’s Day 2019 and welcomed two daughters into the world together – Willa, four, and Delphine, two.

However last year the marriage crumbled into a publicly rancorous divorce as the pair plunged into a custody battle over their little girls.

When Joe and Sophie first split, she reportedly moved into a New York City apartment that Taylor owned as an investment property, according to Page Six.

In the wake of the roiling drama, Sophie was also spotted enjoying outings with Taylor – including one occasion when the pair were seen in the stands of a Kansas City Chiefs game cheering on Taylor’s NFL boyfriend Travis Kelce.

The synopsis of Coup! reads: ‘Isolated on a seaside estate, an entitled journalist (Billy Magnussen) and his socialite wife (Sarah Gadon) take in a mysterious grifter as a private cook (Peter Sarsgaard).

‘When a plague descends on the island, the wily cook rouses his fellow staff to rebel and take over the mansion. Their employer suspects the cook’s coup is part of a more sinister agenda, and mind games between master and servant escalate into all-out class warfare’.

The supporting cast includes Faran Tahir (Iron Man), Kristine Nielsen (The Gilded Age), and Fisher Stevens (Succession).

Writer-director team Joseph Schuman and Austin Stark (The God Committee) said in a statement: ‘Coup! was a labor of love, and it’s been an honor to work with Peter, Billy, Sarah and the rest of our incredible cast and crew.’

Meanwhile, Peter recently revealed that he didn’t know Maggie was an actress when he first fell for her.

‘I met Maggie at a dinner, and I didn’t even know she was an actress. I knew nothing about her, but it was instant,’ he told People of their attraction to each other when they met in 2001.

‘Then Secretary came out maybe six months later, and I was like, “Oh whoa. Okay. She’s not like any other actress in the world,”‘ he added.

Sarsgaard shared that a few years into their relationship, he was offered a role in the film Jarhead, opposite Jake Gyllenhaal.

  • Road House Reboot Director Doug Liman and Jake Gyllenhaal Didn’t Get Paid Despite High Viewership

Road House Reboot Director Doug Liman and Jake Gyllenhaal Didn’t Get Paid Despite High Viewership

Road House reboot director Doug Liman is once again taking a shot at Amazon, claiming he and star Jake Gyllenhaal haven’t been properly compensated.

Liman, 59, penned an scathing open letter back in January, claiming he was boycotting the film’s world premiere at SXSW, though he ultimately attended.

He came aboard the project before Amazon bought MGM, stating he had intended to make a film that would be released in theaters.

However another report claimed that Liman, Gyllenhaal and producer Joel Silver were given a clear choice: take a $60 million budget and get a theatrical release or take a $85 million budget and get a streaming-only release.

Liman and the producers chose the latter, but now, after more than 50 million people watched the remake in the first two weeks, the director said in a new interview with IndieWire that neither he nor Gyllenhaal, ‘didn’t get a cent’ of the streaming revenue, in a new interview with IndieWire.

‘My issue on Road House is that we made the movie for MGM to be in theaters, everyone was paid as if it was going to be in theaters, and then Amazon switched it on us and nobody got compensated,’ Liman said.

‘Forget about the effect on the industry — 50 million people saw Road House — I didn’t get a cent, Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t get a cent, (producer) Joel Silver didn’t get a cent. That’s wrong,’ he added.

The filmmaker also insisted, ‘I have no issue with streaming. We need streaming movies cause, we need writers to go to work and directors to go to work and actors to go to work and not every movie should be in a movie theater.’

‘So I’m a big advocate of TV series, of streaming movies, of theatrical movies, we should have it all,’ he added.

Since Liman, Gyllenhaal and Silver likely negotiated their deals with MGM before Amazon bought them, which may have included back end compensation based on theatrical revenue.

When Amazon took over, and the filmmakers and producers took the streaming-only deal for a higher production budget, those back end compensation figures, if they did indeed exist in their deals, seemingly didn’t transfer into any back end for streaming revenue, which is seemingly Liman’s big issue.

Liman was promoting his new film The Instigators, which will have a limited theatrical release on August 2 before debuting on Apple TV Plus on August 9.

He revealed that his experience with Apple was much different and they were more up front as far as compensation goes.

'My issue on Road House is that we made the movie for MGM to be in theaters, everyone was paid as if it was going to be in theaters, and then Amazon switched it on us and nobody got compensated,' Liman said

‘In the case of Apple, right from the beginning, we said we’re making this for streaming, our contracts compensated streaming, we’re all compensated for it being on streaming — there’s something called a streaming buyout — so Apple has been above-board from the beginning,’ Liman revealed.

He also praised The Instigators producers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck through their company Artists Equity.

‘They come from a place that I come from where they want to make movies that are not empty calories. Cause you can make big, fun action movies that you’ll forget five minutes later and then you can make big, fun action movies that stick with you and you want to watch again or you think about it and you figure something out,” he said.

‘Matt and Ben with Artists Equity are committed in the same way. They want to make big, fun, commercial movies, but they want to make movies that resonate with an audience and that stick with you,’ he said.

    Jeremy Sisto (1992)

Prior to meeting her first husband Ryan, Reese had already captured hearts off-screen.

The actress dated Jeremy Sisto, 49, best known for his role in Clueless, after the duo met while working on a 1992 TV movie.

Sisto later revealed in a Reddit AMA that Witherspoon was his ‘first actress girlfriend.’

‘We had a long-distance relationship for a long time. I was so into her,’ the actor said.

It’s unknown exactly when the pair split up.

    Ryan Phillippe ( 1997 – 2008)

Their meeting was the stuff of romantic comedies: Phillippe, 49, and Witherspoon crossed paths at her 21st birthday party in 1997 and began dating.

In a 1998 interview with Jane magazine, the star revealed, ‘I don’t know what came over me — maybe the seven Midori sours — but I told him, “I think you’re my birthday present.

‘He thought it was so flattering and now that I think about it … how embarrassing!’

The romance progressed quickly, and in 1998, about a year after meeting, the pair got engaged.

The couple went on to star in the iconic 1999 romance/thriller Cruel Intentions together, catapulting their stardom.

Only a few weeks after the movie came out, Reese and Ryan got married in June 1999.

They said ‘I do’ in Charleston, South Carolina at the Old Wide Awake Plantation along the Stono River.

The Big Little Lies star was several months pregnant with their daughter, Ava, at the time.

Reese was 23 when she welcomed Ava — now 24 — in September 1999, three months after their wedding.

In 2002, Ryan revealed that the pair were attending couples therapy in an interview with New York’s Daily News.

‘The biggest mistake is not doing that, ignoring it and having the marriage fall apart because of laziness,’ he said.

Their son Deacon — now 20 — was born four years after their daughter.

Eventually, the fairytale romance began to turn sour. In 2006, three years after having their son, the duo announced they were splitting.

They shared a joint statement at the time.

‘We are saddened to announce that Reese and Ryan have decided to formally separate,’ a representative for the couple said.

‘They remain committed to their family and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time.’

They finalized their divorce in 2008.

    Jake Gyllenhaal (2006 -2009)

Witherspoon began dating Brokeback Mountain star Jake, 43, in 2006 while working together on the movie Rendition.

    The two split in 2009.

At the time a source told Us Weekly that it was an amicable split. ‘No one cheated. There was no drama.’

Other sources close to the couple said the relationship had just run its course.

A friend told U.S. TV network E!: ‘They needed time to figure it out and they were on different coasts. When they were finally together, they talked it out and decided they’re not going to be together any more.

‘There are no other people involved. The relationship just ended. It just fizzled. But they also wanted to be careful and private about it because of Reese’s kids.’

    Jim Toth (2010 – 2023)

One year after her split from Gyllenhaal, Witherspoon began dating Hollywood talent agent Jim, 54.

The duo wed in March 2011 and welcomed their son Tennessee — now 11 — one year later.

In a 2011 interview with Marie Claire, Witherspoon called herself ‘very lucky’ to have found Toth.

‘Now I feel a great sense of relief and an incredible amount of support from my husband… Somebody close to me once said, “Oh, no man will ever accept your children.” And I just thought it was the most horrifying thing someone has ever said to me in my entire life.’

‘I was determined to find somebody who would make that not true. And I got lucky. I did. I got very lucky, and he’s wonderful. And so wonderful with the children. I’m very blessed.’

But after 12-years of marriage, Witherspoon and Toth announced their split in March of 2023.

‘We have some personal news to share … It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce,’ they shared in a statement.

‘We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together.

‘Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter.

‘These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone’s respect for our family’s privacy at this time.’

A week after the announcement, Reese officially filed for divorce.

She cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind their split in court documents obtained by TMZ. The documents were filed in Nashville, Tennessee, where they live with their son.

The documents reveal the couple agreed to a prenuptial agreement in March 2011. Reese indicated the contract was valid, ‘providing “adequate and sufficient provisions” for their assets and debts.’

An insider told People that it was ‘very difficult’ for the movie star to accept that she and her former partner were ‘two very different people.’

But after 12-years of marriage, Witherspoon and Toth announced their split in March of 2023; seen in 2020

Someone close to the two noted that the ambitious producer ‘has her hand in a lot of pots’ and Toth ‘prefers less frenzy.’

It was added that, ‘They’ve been spending less and less time together while she was working.’

More than ten years after tying the knot, the longtime duo recently ‘found themselves with fewer interests in common.’

Reese is described by a source as ‘headstrong and focused’ and Jim is said to be ‘more laid-back.’

Despite going through a divorce a source close to The Last Thing He Told Me producer told People in April that she has ‘no regrets’ about ending the union and is ‘doing much better now.’

    Oliver Haarmann (2024)

Reese has been spotted enjoying a number of dates with Haarman – whose ex-wife – businesswoman Mala Gaonkar, 54, is now in a relationship with musician David Byrne, 72.

In snaps from this week she looked chic in a black dress and heels as she hopped into an SUV before a dinner date with Haarmann – who wore a white shirt and blue trousers.

They were also seen on Sunday arriving at a heliport together before heading to an apartment building.

It is unclear how serious their relationship is. DailyMail.com has contacted Reese’s representative for comment.

Haarmann – who is German – is a founding partner of Searchlight Capital Partners, a private equity investment firm.

He was previously a senior partner of the global investment firm KKR & Co. He shares two sons with Gaonkar.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and international relations from NYC’s Brown University in 1990, and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1996.

Mark Wahlberg’s Refusal to Star in Oscar-Winning Film With Same-Sex Storyline

    • Have YOU got a story? Email tips@dailymail.com

Mark Wahlberg passed up the opportunity to star in one of the most iconic movies of all-time due to feeling ‘creeped out’ by its same-sex storyline.

Wahlberg, now 53, and best known for roles in The Departed and The Transformers franchise, could have starred in 2005 Ang Lee epic, Brokeback Mountain – which became one of the most successful LGBTQ+ films in history and netted three Oscars.

However Wahlberg confessed to feeling uncomfortable due to the ‘graphic, descriptive’ nature of the script – which tells the tale of two American cowboys turned gay lovers – with the roles ultimately played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.

In a 2007 interview Wahlberg said the film’s first sex scene between the cowboys Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist left him convinced the film ‘wasn’t his deal’,

He said: ‘I met with Ang Lee in that movie, I read 15 pages of the script and got a little creeped out.

Wahlberg added: ‘the spitting on the hand, getting ready to do the thing.’

‘Obviously, it was done in taste – look how it was received.’

The National Enquirer reported at the time that Wahlberg’s Catholic priest advised him to pass on the project.

Before Lee – who would win the Best Director Oscar for the film – took on the project, My Own Private Idaho filmmaker Gus Van Sant was approached to direct, and he revealed numerous A-listers had been offered, and passed, on the project.

He told IndieWire in 2018: ‘Nobody wanted to do it. I was working on it, and I felt like we needed a really strong cast, like a famous cast. That wasn’t working out. I asked the usual suspects: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Ryan Phillippe. They all said no.

‘Yes, all those young gentlemen (at the time) turned down the project, for various reasons.’

The film earned widespread critical acclaim and landed eight Oscar nominations including  Supporting Actor and Best Actor Oscar nods for Gyllenhaal and Ledger.

It took home the awards for Best Director, Best Original Score and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The film shockingly lost out on the Best Picture Oscar to Crash – a decision which has since been marked as one of the biggest upsets in the awards show’s history.

Gyllenhaal reflected on the most famous lines from the movie – ‘I wish I knew how to quit you’ – and how powerful that scene was to film.

‘That line has moved, it has been mocked, it has been everything in between, but I remember coming out of that scene, off that ridge of the hill, and seeing a number of the crew, some of whom didn’t even know what the movie was about, crying,’ Jake recalled.

‘When I first read that line, I was like, “What is that?” Now I realise that anybody who has loved knows what that feels like. The interesting part of casting us at such a young age was that we didn’t completely understand what we were involved in, and that’s the beauty of the movie as well.’

    Rating:

I don’t think I’ve previously chosen a comedy as lead review and Peacock may seem a niche choice. However, this is an interesting time to explore TV comedy’s own proverbial ‘Interesting Times’, because let’s face it, 2024 is no laughing matter.

The Peacock in question (whom we first met in a 2022 three-parter) is Andy (Allan Mustafa), a personal trainer specialising in ‘body positivity’.

Andy’s struggling with what it means to be a modern man. In an environment of wannabe winners aiming for endless Personal Bests, he’s a bit of a loser.

Peacock is a ‘workplace comedy’. From Are You Being Served and Fawlty Towers, to The Office and The Thick Of It, these arguably provide the funniest ‘situations’ for our finest comedies – while the best of the rest invariably work from home.

For situational spin (never mind a spin class) gyms are perfect environments, heaving with the kind of people who take their glutes too seriously.

Indeed, personal trainer-cum-gymfluencer, Kara (Saffron Hocking), gives Andy a tour of Sportif Leisure’s upscale ‘flagship’ site, and reels off a list of fitness-related nonsense jargon (‘fully immersive spin studio’, ‘Zen Pilates and meditation’, ‘KPI’) which, for this critic welded to the sofa, means the comedy ‘situation’ box is already ticked.

However, in testing times for TV comedy writers, you either have to push pretty far (a la Ricky Gervais’s After Life; easy to pull off when you have the pulling-power of Ricky Gervais) or rein it in a bit.

Millennials’ taste in ‘funny’ can be hard to gauge, while belly-laughs and wokery in the same episode are uneasy bedfellows. (And in 2024 is ‘bedfellows’ even A Thing? Bedmates, maybe? BedFellowTravellers even more appropriately vague.)

Fortunately, Peacock swerves most of the trials-and-tribulations of contemporary comedy by simply being very silly instead – always in fashion, in my opinion.

It’s written and created by Steve Stamp and Ben Murray, so there’s plenty of quality comedy provenance; they’re both members of the team who gave us the silly-funny ‘mockumentary’ series, People Just Do Nothing (big in many households containing teenagers, including mine).

Indeed, when he’s not Andy Peacock, the ever-excellent Mustafa is the equally inadequate MC Grindah of the pirate radio posse, Kurupt FM.

Peacock has a great supporting cast including Pippa Haywood (Green Wing) and Lucien Laviscount as Andy’s nemesis Jay – a long way from his role as Emily In Paris’s beau.

Peacock is a cleverly observed sitcom whose protagonist’s likeability far exceeds that of David Brent or Alan Partridge, never mind Basil Fawlty. Which may in fact be why the show falls just short of ‘brilliant’.

Frankly, however, ‘very funny’ is something for which I’ll happily settle. Because in June 2024, you really can ‘smell the tension with a knife’, right?

    A classy remake with Jake

    PRESUMED INNOCENT

    Rating:

I stayed up late finishing Scott Turow’s debut page-turner, Presumed Innocent, just before interviewing him back in 1997. Chicagoan Turow was charming in a high-powered Harvard Law School-educated attorney turned global bestselling author way; I can’t believe it was nearly 30 years ago!

That book-buster was adapted into a 1990 blockbuster movie with Harrison Ford as Rusty Sabich, the lawyer charged with murdering a female colleague with whom he’d had an affair.

Presumably, estimable screenwriter David E Kelley (aka Mr Michelle Pfeiffer) figures that a new generation of viewers will never have heard of the book, or movie, much less know the ending’s spectacular twist.

However, although the film was 127 minutes long, this eight-parter clocks in at 360, adding several new layers that could be considered to lead an audience-cum-jury.

Nonetheless, with Jake Gyllenhaal, in his first TV role, as Rusty, his real-life brother-in-law Peter Sarsgaard as prosecutor Tommy Molto, veteran character actor Bill Camp as their boss, Ray Horgan, and Camp’s real-life wife (fabulous Elizabeth Marvel of Homeland) as Horgan’s wife Lorraine, among the plot-thrills and blood-spills this fresh version is also a classy family affair.

    LL-B’s in his element!

Fruity voiceovers? Bridgerton-esque wardrobes? One eyebrow raised so high it might challenge (Traitors US host) Alan Cumming’s brow to a duel? Yup, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen is back.

In Outrageous Homes (Ch4), he’s practically an LL-B parody, visiting folk whose interiors match – or possibly clash – with their own idiosyncrasies. It’s like a quirky Through The Keyhole with an excess of pattern and punning.

Super Surgeons: A Chance At Life (Ch4) follows patients and medics through their cancer procedures at the Royal Marsden. And while I don’t gravitate towards watching close-up surgery this was both touching and revealing.

Preparing to operate on 18-year-old Anthea’s sarcoma, Professor Andy Hayes summed-up his dilemma: ‘Operating on young people is a little bit emotional… but there’s no place for emotion during an operation.’

Presumed Innocent review: A Masterpiece of Plotting

    Presumed Innocent (AppleTV+)

    Rating:

Falsely accused of murder, jobless, sleeping on the sofa… the only way life could get any worse for lawyer Rusty Sabich is if Taylor Swift wrote a song about him.

And that’s not impossible. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays Rusty in the legal thriller Presumed Innocent, is an ex-boyfriend of Ms Swift and rumoured to be the target of her 2012 break-up song All Too Well.

Based on a mega-selling novel by Scott Turow, this mini-series is a masterpiece of plotting. Each twist piles up another layer of incriminating evidence against Rusty, so that soon everyone is doubting his innocence: his wife, his children, his oldest friend, even the viewers.

The victim is his closest colleague in the Chicago prosecuting attorney’s office, a single mother called Carolyn Polhemus. Rusty is assigned to the investigation, and neglects to tell police he was having an affair with her.

His wife, Barbara (Ruth Negga), knew about Rusty’s infidelity — though not that he was still obsessed with Carolyn, to the point of stalking her.

The book was condensed into a Hollywood movie starring Harrison Ford in 1990 but this eight-part serial has far more time to build the tension and relish each fresh revelation, building to a cliffhanger at the end of each weekly episode.

Each one subverts what we think we know about Rusty, even when we think nothing else can surprise us. Shock one: Carolyn was pregnant with his baby. Shock two: he was with her on the night she died . . . and her son has video to prove it. Shock three: Rusty’s own teenage son was also outside the house that night.

All this disguises the basic fact that Presumed Innocent has dated badly. It belongs to an era when single women having affairs with married men were automatically treated as culprits in their own murders. Whoever is ‘innocent’ here, it isn’t Carolyn, discovered naked, bloodied and trussed up in her own living room.

Killer or not, Rusty is a creep, and his penchant for violent sex only makes it worse. But viewers are expected to agree that this self-confessed stalker is a worthy hero, whose only crime was to love a woman too intensely.

Strong supporting performances help us to ignore these misgivings. O-T Fagbenle is superb as the newly appointed district attorney, a weasel of a man who drawls his words like Truman Capote.

Peter Sarsgaard, who is married to Gyllenhaal’s actress sister, Maggie, plays Rusty’s ex-colleague and worst enemy, Tommy Molto, a man who suffered years of professional humiliation as the office underling and is now out to extract every drop of revenge.

And Bill Camp is disconcertingly convincing as Rusty’s former boss Raymond, now his lawyer, who looks like a heart attack wrapped in a blubber duvet.

The first page of Turow’s novel tells us that everyone who meets Raymond thinks, ‘He does not look well,’ and that was my reaction, too. Give that man a salad.

Seal of approval of the night: The first Royal Warrant for Britain’s snootiest supermarket was awarded in 1928 by Queen Mary, we learned on Waitrose: Trouble In The Aisles? (Ch5). The King’s great-grandmother was a great fan of their honey soap . . . bubbles with a buzz.
