She’s known for her sophistication but Cate Blanchett – the star of a satirical comedy Rumours which premiered in Cannes on Saturday night – surprised many with her comic timing today.
Actress Blanchett, 55, plays the German Chancellor in a riotous film which has a zombie apocalypse descend on the leaders of the world at the G7 summit.
Asked how she knew that she wanted to do the film, she said that a meeting with the directors had convinced her.
She quipped: ‘It’s like a first date – you pretty much instantly know whether you are going to end up sleeping together. You do!’
Canadian film maker Maddin said: ‘One world leader alone is kind of funny and you get two of them together and it’s a little bit funnier but seven of them is a critical mass, it writes itself because that’s a lot of indignity crammed together in one place.’

Charles Dance plays the US President but the big attraction is Blanchett as Hilda Ortmann, a German chancellor who bears a more than passing resemblance in hairstyle and clothes taste to former leader Angela Merkel.
The leaders meet at a country estate to draft a statement about the ‘global crisis’ but are knocked off course when bad things happen after the exhumation of an Iron Age corpse for a photo opportunity.
Blanchett said: ‘I think if you try to make sense of this movie, you’ll feel like you’re losing your mind. It’s not trying to be an important film with a message.’
Charles Dance was chosen to be the President of the United States who was completely British as a surrealist touch.
Director Maddin said it might have the audience ask: ‘What if the revolutionary war went another way? What if (America) just stayed a colony?’
Co-director Galen Johnson said: ‘Or what about if America became so conservative that it became a colony again.’
Blanchett dazzled in a gold sequinned blouse as she lead the stars at a photocall for her upcoming flick Rumours on Sunday afternoon.
The Australian actress looked effortlessly chic as she headed out with her co-stars at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on Sunday, following the film’s premiere the night before.

Cate was joined for the photocall by her co-stars Denis Menochet, Rolando Ravello, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Roy Dupuis and Charles Dance.
For the photocall, Cate donned a glitzy gold sweater which adorned with sequins, as well as a pair of leather bootleg trousers.
Cate opted for a relaxed look as she rolled her sleeves up and sported a pair of black sunglasses amid the French sun.
She finished off the look with a pair of black patent stilettos and wore her golden locks in loose waves down by her shoulders.
Cate accessorised with a black and gold chain bangle on her left wrist, while she wore a huge gold ring on her right hand.
Joining Cate for the photocall was her co-star British actress Nikki, who looked incredible in a white blazer-style longline corset – which had bejeweled buttons.
Nikki paired the chic blouse with matching wide-leg trousers and finished the ensemble with white sandal platform heels.
It comes after the star graced the rep carpet in Cannes on Saturday evening for the Rumours premiere, in keeping with the gold theme.
She looked nothing short of sensational in a sparkly gold gown as she led the stars for the screening which got a four minute standing ovation.
Cate’s co-star Alicia Vikander was notably not in attendance.
The stylish ensemble boasted a scoop neckline, padded shoulders for structure, and a draping design at the bust.
The floor-length gown showcased Cate’s slender figure as it draped delicately along the red carpet.
Cate opted for styling her blonde locks in a chic up do for the evening and adorned a flawless palette of makeup.
She then further accessorised the sparkly ensemble with a pair of diamond drop earrings.
The star was also joined on the carpet by her co-star Denis Ménochet, 47, who cut a dapper figure in a black tuxedo with a white bow.
Directors of the film Evan Johnson, 41, and Guy Maddin, 68, also took up the chance to get several snaps with the Academy Award winner.
