Cate shares four children with her husband Andrew Upton – sons Dashiell, 22, Roman, 20, and Ignatius, 16 and daughter Edith.
She has previously admitted that her kids are ‘disinterested’ in her fame, ‘in the best possible, healthiest way.’
Cate and her husband adopted Edith in 2015, with the actress’ speaking at the time about her sons’ close bond with their little sister, saying that she finds it ‘extraordinary.’
‘I find it extraordinary, glimpsing them becoming a unit. And a very welcoming unit,’ she told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2015. ‘I’m very proud of them.’
She has also explained how she and Andrew first discussed the possibility of adoption two decades ago.
‘We actually began the conversation a very long time ago, after our first son was born and he’s about to turn 14,’ she told Women in the World’s Tina Brown shortly after adopting Edith in 2015.
‘And then we just had two other children and it sort of dropped off the radar.’
Cate also emphasised that the decision to adopt Edith was not based on a desire to have a girl after having three sons, explaining:
‘I felt we had space, enough emotional room in our hearts and were privileged enough to have the capacity to have another child, so it wasn’t about biology.
