Carly Saunders and Tresne Middleton have welcomed their second child together and shared the poignant meaning behind their son’s name.
The My Kitchen Rules couple, who lost their daughter Poppy Grace to leukaemia last year, took to Instagram to share the news with their fans in a lengthy post.
On their joint account, they shared an array of photographs of their baby boy and shared details of the ‘scary’ labour in a lengthy caption.
Carly penned: ‘A beautiful ray of sunshine has arrived to brighten up our world. Meet our baby boy, Sunny Lars Middleton.
‘It was a scary start with some resuscitation distress, but our darling boy recovered quickly and only needed to be admitted to the special care nursery for 23 hours.
‘We were separated for the first 4 hours as there were some concerns about my heart rate but Tresne was with Sunny and was FaceTiming me whilst he was in the humidity crib.
‘Sunny was 3.4kg (7.5 pounds) and 49cm long. He has brought us so much joy, love and awe.
‘We’ve cried oceans of fat tears, felt all the gratitude, grief and pain tenfold with newfound appreciation. We’re soaking up all of what Sunny brings in total awe. He is loved beyond measure.
‘We very much feel that Poppy Grace has been instrumental in sending her precious brother to us.
‘Many little signs have been prominent along the way. Whenever we see the number 420, the time Poppy passed away, we feel it’s a little hi from heaven. Weirdly we got home from hospital at 4:20pm and it felt like we were all home together.’
They were quickly flooded with congratulatory messages from their famous friends and fans, who were overjoyed for the couple.
The couple confirmed they were expecting their second child together back in March, sharing an adorable video of Carly showing off her baby bump.
In a caption, they detailed their difficult battle with grief over Poppy’s tragic death and their IVF journey before sharing their excitement over their baby news.
‘We have some exciting news! Poppy Grace is going to be a big sister!’ they shared.
‘We’ve been battling with the right time to share this news, as we always want to be sensitive to those who have been going through their own challenges with cancer and fertility treatment. But this bump is getting too big to hide!’
The couple explained they had undergone six rounds of IVF treatment last year and suffered a miscarriage before falling pregnant with their baby boy.
They continued: ‘Our baby boy is due the day before my birthday, August 24th. It has been quite the journey, with Tresne and I both going through IVF and grief together.

‘Tresne underwent six rounds of IVF treatment between this year and last, plus a platelet rich plasma treatment directly into her ovaries and a brief trip to Mexico for a new fertility treatment just last month. Her egg collection journey continues.
‘After the miscarriage in June last year, I underwent a second round of IVF. Between us we’ve managed to undergo nine general anesthetics in the past six months.
‘This darling little boy is something very positive for us to look forward to. We want to give this sweet little boy the best possible chance, and we know that our beautiful Poppy will be excitedly looking down on us with happiness dancing in her heart.’
The couple suffered a devastating miscarriage last year, just months after their baby daughter Poppy Grace died at the age of one in February.
The couple announced the heartbreaking news on their joint Instagram account at the time.
‘Sadly, we know that miscarriage occurs in one in four pregnancies. It certainly doesn’t make living through one any easier,’ Tresne began her post.
Carly started IVF in May 2023 after they started to heal from Poppy’s death, and found out she was pregnant on what would have been their late daughter’s 2nd birthday.
The couple announced on Instagram in February last year that their baby Poppy Grace (pictured) had died at 20 months old after a battle with leukemia
‘We had started to heal, we did a variety of health scans, we were fit and well and we felt as if Poppy was guiding us towards growing our family,’ Tresne continued.
‘Watching the ultrasound machine scanning over Carly’s belly, frantically looking for a heartbeat was devastating.’
In February 2023, the couple confirmed the devastating new that their baby Poppy Grace had died at 20 months old after a battle with leukemia.
‘She taught us so very much in her short 20 months and we have never experienced a love as all encompassing,’ they wrote in an emotional post at the time.
The much-loved couple rose to fame on My Kitchen Rules back in 2014.
