Candace Cameron Bure Opens Up About 30-Year Marriage Struggles

Candace Cameron Bure has revealed the struggles she endured in her marriage of nearly 30 years.

The Full House star, 49, has been married to Valeri Bure since 1996 but, in a candid interview, admitted she has some regrets in their relationship.

During an appearance on Madison Rose Troutt’s podcast, Stay True, she admitted there are years in her relationship she wishes she could redo – and lifted the lid on the strain having children put on their relationship.

‘We had great years. We had some years I wish that we could take back and do over,’ she said with a grunt. ‘It’s a constant re-evaluation, I think year to year, you have to reevaluate. What’s working, what’s not, how are the schedules changing? And you have to continually adapt to what’s new to figure out your rhythms, and the rhythms are going to keep changing.’

‘So having a flexibility not only in schedule but with each other as husband and wife, because that’s the first thing that’s going to go.’

‘Your marriage gets put to the test,’ she continued. ‘Because, first of all, you have kids that come in and they demand all of you. And then they get a little older and then they pit you against your husband.

‘And you don’t even realize it! They’re little manipulative beings that are so stinking cute! But they’re going to ask you for a cookie and you’re going to tell them no,

‘And then they’re going to go to daddy and they’re going to go, “But… I’m have the cookie cause daddy said yes.” And then you’re like, “Why did you give that to her? I already told her no.” And he’s like, “Well, I didn’t know that.”‘

‘And then you guys get in a fight and you’re like, “That stinking little one just got us into a fight and we love you!” You know, we love each other. And this is crazy! But that’s how it works and it just gets bigger the older they they get.’

‘Again, finding those rhythms and really finding time with you and your husband… just in terms of children, if I could lend you some advice, that would be it, that you have to prioritize the relationship,’ she said.

Candace tied the knot with Valeri in 1996 and they share three adult children: Natasha, 27, Lev, 25, and Maksim, 23.

It’s not the first time Candace has been candid about the struggles she has endured in their marriage.

Recently Candace said she and Valeri have also faced ‘valleys of real struggle,’ which they managed to rebuild from over time.

‘There were times of deep brokenness that I felt,’ she told Us Weekly. ‘There are days I wrestle with brokenness. I have experienced that. I mean, we all do. I don’t know that it’s [something] I feel daily, but there have been seasons of that in my life.’

‘But God is in the restoration business, and he [God] loves to restore and make all things new, and he certainly has,’ she continued.

'We had some years I wish that we could take back and do over,' she admitted on Madi Prew's podcast

‘I think that there’s always been a struggle with work and family life balance. I think so many women experience that.’

The interview comes after Candace admitted that she and her husband almost separated and nearly went through with ending their marriage back in 2020, but their son guided them towards reconciliation.

On a July episode of The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast, she recalled: ‘Val and I went through a really, really rough season in our marriage.’

She said at one point, they both had thoughts about splitting up until their kids stepped in.

‘It was going south quickly. And we were like, “I don’t know, I don’t think … we’re gonna make it through.’

She recalled how their middle child, their eldest son Lev — who was also recording the podcast with her and their pastor Jonathan ‘JP’ Pokluda — stepped in and guided them through the rough patch with religion.

‘Lev came up to us and said, “We’d like to talk to you guys”,’ she recalled.

‘Lev preached like a 45-minute sermon on marriage to us, like, had his Bible open on the couch and just talked to us about it.’

She continued, ‘And I’ll never forget. He said, “I haven’t been married and I’m just a young kid, and it’s probably hard to take marriage advice from someone this young [who] never experienced it before. But I don’t need to be married to know what the word of God says.”‘

The actress said their son’s perspective opened their eyes and reminded them of their family values.

‘He was just such a calm voice that had so much wisdom behind it. And he looked us straight in the eye and individually asked me and asked Val, “Have you done everything you can?”

‘We walked away from that, and Val and I were like, “We raised pretty good kids.”

‘That was, like, the pivotal moment,’ she continued. ‘It really changed for us after that talk. It’s a whole different scenario when your kids sit you down to talk and say, “Are you being as mature as you can be?”‘

She added: ‘I’m so grateful to Lev, and Maks and Natasha. They were so supportive of everything.’
