Brie Larson kicked off Christmas season at Disneyland in Anaheim on Saturday by narrating the invite-only, 65th Annual Candlelight Processional.
The 34-year-old Oscar winner told the story of the first Christmas as a 600-member candlelight choir paraded down Main Street U.S.A. to Christmas tree-shaped risers and performed carols during the religious Christian event.
The Disneyland Candlelight Ceremony – which was founded by Walt Disney in 1958 – also features a live orchestra, handbell players, and fanfare trumpeters.
And while the theme park is packed with an average 51K visitors each day, only a few hundred VIP invited guests are granted reserved seating at the vigil.
There’s also limited standing room only viewing areas near City Hall, the Opera House, and behind the seating sections in Town Square on a first-come, first-served basis.

Brie (born Brianne Desaulniers) was only unveiled as the secret celebrity narrator after eagle-eyed fans spotted her at a soundcheck earlier in the day.
Larson was following in the famous footsteps of prior narrators Cary Grant, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, Dick Van Dyke, Kurt Russell, Molly Ringwald, John Stamos, Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Ginnifer Goodwin, Jane Seymour, Chris Pratt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sterling K. Brown, and James Earl Jones.
And the blonde Cali native will be back for more on Sunday with two additional performances scheduled for 5:30pm and 7:45pm.
Disney owns the Marvel Comic Universe, and Brie reprised her role as Captain Marvel Carol Danvers in Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels, which has only earned $189.1M of its $274.8M budget back at the global box office since opening November 10.
Last Thursday, Disney CEO Bob Iger blamed the coronavirus pandemic and a lack of supervision on set for the disappointing response to the 33rd installment in the MCU.
‘The Marvels was shot during Covid. There wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what’s being done day after day after day,’ the 72-year-old mogul said at The New York Times Dealbook Summit.
‘The experience of accessing [the films] and watching them in the home is better than it ever was. And [it’s] a bargain when you think about it. Streaming Disney+ you can get for $7 a month. That’s a lot cheaper than taking your whole family to a film. So, I think the bar is now raised in terms of quality about what gets people out of their homes, into movie theaters.’
The Captain Marvel sequel – which scored 62% on Rotten Tomatoes – also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh.

On November 17, Brie teased that her character Carol Danvers would be returning for a future mystery project.
‘I don’t want Marvel to come for me,’ Larson told ET.
‘But there is something. There is definitely something, to answer your question, that I would want to say, but I am not going to so.’
The former teen pop star added: ‘She is just a great character to continue to grow with. It’s like, as I am growing she is growing.’
Brie also executive produced and starred as chemist-turned-cooking show host Elizabeth Zott in Apple TV+’s critically-acclaimed adaptation of Bonnie Garmus’ 2022 novel Lessons in Chemistry, which concluded November 22.
‘We tried to tell as complete a story as we could, not that everything was wrapped up,’ showrunner Lee Eisenberg told TheWrap last Tuesday of a potential second season.
‘But it felt like emotionally, things ended, for us at least, on a satisfying note. I’m completely open to the idea of going beyond another season if we have the right idea. I think that when these things come from a place of cynicism, and it’s like, “Oh, well, Lessons in Chemistry is doing well, let’s just keep the train going.”
‘The result for that will never yield anything positive, but I think if we have the right idea, nothing would make me happier. I loved every single person on the show. They’ve become close friends and collaborators that I’ll work with for the rest of my career. So from a selfish perspective about who I want to spend my days with, the answer would be a resounding yes. From a creative perspective, we haven’t landed on anything that makes me think we’re ready to do that.’
