Brian Cox, 79, Honors Scottish Roots in Kilt at Toronto Film Festival Premiere with Wife Nicole, 56

Brian Cox proudly paid tribute to his Scottish heritage as he hit the red carpet with his glamorous wife, Nicole, at the premiere of his latest movie, Glenrothan, during the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday.

The Succession star, 79, embraced his roots in a traditional black kilt, teamed with a smart dark grey blazer, a crisp black shirt, and a matching waistcoat.

He completed the look with long black socks and polished black leather loafers, smiling for the cameras as he arrived for the screening.

Nicole, 56, looked equally striking in a dark grey metallic strapless gown as she cosied up to her husband on the red carpet.

She added height with silver open-toe platform heels and accessorised with a diamond pendant necklace and matching earrings.

In a sweet nod to her husband’s heritage, Nicole also embraced the Scottish theme, donning a chic green tartan headpiece to complete her ensemble.

Glenrothan is a 2025 Scottish drama directed by and starring Brian, which follows two estranged brothers.

Donal (Alan Cumming) and Sandy (Cox) reunite after decades apart when Donal returns to their Highland home to save the family’s whisky distillery, forcing them to confront the past.

The Toronto premiere follows Brian’s decision to snub his homeland for the movie’s launch, despite the project receiving funding from the Scottish Government.

Speaking to The Herald last month, he said: ‘You can’t sell anything at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Nobody is bothered about that element of it – how you sell the f****** product.

‘There is something immensely practical about art – it’s all about how you sell it.’

Referring to a financial crisis in 2022 in which the EIFF came close to extinction, Brian added: ‘It is the oldest film festival there is, but with the big chaos they had a few years ago, it has lost viability.

Glenrothan, which was shot in Edinburgh, Glasgow and rural Stirlingshire, was given £540,000 by Screen Scotland to help bankroll its development and production.

Other Screen Scotland-funded movies that chose to launch in Toronto instead of Edinburgh included California Schemin’ – directed by James McAvoy – the thriller Fuze, and a remake of Frankenstein.

Between them, the movies received £1.7m of Scottish taxpayers’ money.

EIFF director Paul Ridd said: ‘There were a number of terrific films we considered where the stakeholders ultimately made the decision to premiere elsewhere later in the year. This is all part of the process.

‘We respect the decisions of filmmakers, producers and key players behind these films and their launch strategies.’

No specific UK release date for the movie has been announced yet.

However, the movie is expected to air in 2026 following its international release.
