Brian Austin Green on His Status with Ex Vanessa Marcil After Tumultuous Split

Brian Austin Green gave rare insight into where he stands with ex-fiancee Vanessa Marcil while reflecting on their ‘extremely tumultuous’ split over 20 years earlier. 

The 52-year-old actor – who recently enjoyed a reunion with Tiffani Thiessen 30 years after their breakup – opened up about the topic during Tuesday’s episode of the Inside Of You podcast with host Michael Rosenbaum. 

After first crossing paths on set of Beverly Hills, 90210, Green and Marcil were in a relationship from 1999 through 2003. The former couple also share son Kassius, 23.

At one point, Rosenbaum questioned the star if he ‘gets along’ with all of his exes – which prompted Green to simply respond with a laugh: ‘No.’  

He then talked about his split from Marcil and expressed, ‘It was a very tumultuous separation because you have this thing in your head of like, you want to win.

‘You want to be the smarter of the two. You want to be acknowledged for that. So you’ve got these unrealistic expectations and both of us did. So it was extremely tumultuous.’ 

Daily Mail has reached out to Marcil’s rep for comment but did not immediately hear back. 

When it comes to the current relationships he has with his exes, Green added, ‘I learned a lot from my previous relationship with Kassius’ mom.’ 

Following their separation in 2003, both Green and the Las Vegas actress were notably involved in co-parenting drama and past legal disputes. 

In 2004, the actor moved on with Megan Fox – whom he was married to from 2010 until their divorce was finalized in 2021. The pair also share three children: Noah, 13, Bodhi, 11, and Journey, nine. 

Green is now engaged to professional dancer Sharna Burgess and they welcomed son Zane, three, back in 2022. 

During the latest podcast episode, the actor also talked about how his co-parenting relationship with Fox was different after they split. 

‘We really made a decision at the point when we separated, we can’t keep this from affecting our kids, but it’s up to us how it affects our kids.’

He continued, ‘It’s going to no matter what. It sucks for kids when the parents separate and all that.’ 

Green later explained, ‘Kass is 23 now and so the last thing I want to do is have him deal with any sort of s***.

‘So, I just stay as far away from that situation as I can with his mom and go, “We started something poorly that I don’t think will ever fix itself. Let’s just chalk it up to it was a learning lesson.”‘ 

Green also revealed that both he and Fox ‘are great.’

The Transformers actress recently welcomed another child Saga with Machine Gun Kelly earlier this year in March. 

However, the actor expressed that it took some time for him and Fox to reach the positive relationship they now have. 

‘We’re not going to all of a sudden just be great friends as we’re co-parenting,’ Green said. 

‘We stopped being together because we didn’t get along as well as we did when we first did, so let’s take that expectation out of it and resign to the fact that, listen, I only care about the health and wellness of my kids.’ 

Green’s comments come months after he labeled his past relationship with Marcil as ‘toxic’ on his Oldish podcast back in May. 

Green and Marcil have been embroiled in co-parenting drama since their split and back in 2023, he made claims that the actress did not let him see their son Kassius at one point.

She also has alleged in 2018 that both Brian and then-wife Megan Fox had ‘cut Kass out of their lives.’ However, Vanessa later revealed that the Transformers actress apologized for her role in their family drama.

The actor recalled how his mother had ‘smothered him’ while growing up, and how that affected his own relationships in the future.

‘If I’m looking for a woman, I want the complete opposite of that. I had some major missteps because of that,’ he said on his podcast in May. 

‘I mean, the relationship that I had with Vanessa was very toxic in that way. Like, it wasn’t a loving, caring relationship.’

He added of his mother, ‘To a fault sometimes, just everything was about me. And then with Vanessa, it was not that at all, but it was masked in this is a relationship where that absolutely exists.

‘So you start thinking like, “Oh, it’s just kind of a new version. Like, oh, she loves me, but this is her way of loving me.”‘

Green explained that he initially believed Vanessa had being ‘trying to help me’ but just a couple years later, he didn’t recognize himself.

‘You’re like, “Who am I at this point? There’s not once piece of me that’s left. My relationship with everyone around me has changed.”‘

After their split, Brian began dating Fox which he called a ‘breath of fresh air, coming out of what felt like Vietnam to me.’

The former couple started dating in 2004 after they crossed paths on set of Hope & Faith. At the time, she was 18-years-old and he was 30.

Last year, Marcil came to Fox’s defense and shared that the beauty previously apologized for her involvement in their family drama.

In response to a fan on Instagram, Marcil penned: ‘She has apologized to both me and our child. She stated she is “disgusted” by her behavior. However, it wasn’t her job to keep a grown man/biological parent in his son’s life. That’s on him.’

She added, ‘It’s true as you said that it’s painful to watch #sharnaburgess try to gaslight her followers, however I do feel for her too.

‘Only difference is that she’s not a child like Megan was. She’s being conned and would have to give up her whole ‘fairy tale’ in order to stand up for the truth at this point.’

The star then added of Burgess, ‘But trust me, in her gut, she knows that she’s being lied to. I feel for her and her beautiful son. We [don’t] really matter anymore. The kids do. One day we will all be gone and these siblings will all be together.

‘My son is the oldest and he knows the real truth. He will protect them. Their safety and peace are all he cares about. The truth will always prevail in the end.’

Marcil expressed, ‘It’s good to be on the right side of history and to know I gave up everything to protect my son and stand up to the truth.’

And in 2023, Green claimed that Vanessa had kept their son Kassius out of his life amid his health struggles with vertigo. 

Marcil has previously alleged that she raised Kassius all on her own. She also claimed that he had taken her to court for years and requested for child support – which Green denied.
