Brandy eager to return for I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot

With Sony moving forward on their I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot with a July 2025 release date, a star from the original sequel wants to return: Brandy.

The original I Know What You Did Last Summer hit theaters in October 1997 and took in $125 million worldwide from just a $17 million budget, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe.

Sony quickly put together the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,  which brought back Love Hewitt and Prinze Jr., along with new characters played by singer/actress Brandy and Mekhi Phifer, which only took in $40 million at the box office.

Sony announced a ‘reboot’ of the franchise last year, with both Love Hewitt and Prinze Jr. reprising their roles, though the director Jenn Kaytin Robinson insisted the 1998 sequel is canon.

After the director tweeted that the sequel is still canon, many started pushing for Brandy to return as Karla Wilson, with the singer agreeing, in a new interview with THR.

While promoting Disney Channel’s new Descendants sequel, Brandy was asked about the reboot, which she was not aware of.

‘I didn’t know Sony was putting that together. That’s interesting!’ Brandy said, and when asked if she was ‘pulling a fast one’ to hide her involvement, she said she was not.

‘I’m not pulling a fast one on you. I did not know that,’ Brandy said, before revealing that her character did survive I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

‘I need them to give me a call because I survived in that movie! I came out in the end, bloodied up, ready to go,’ she said.

Brandy added, ‘I did not die in that film. Jennifer, Freddie, hit me up.’

The original film followed four friends (Love Hewitt, Gellar, Prinze Jr., Phillippe) who accidentally hit a pedestrian with their car while driving to the beach.

They think the pedestrian is dead but when he wakes up and tries to grab one of them, he’s pushed into the water below as they all swear to never discuss what happened.

A year later Julie (Love Hewitt) gets a letter that says, ‘I know what you did last summer,’ as the group tries to figure out who knows what they did.
