Boy George, told the talk show host he would sit outside Bowie’s house with other fans and that the star massively influenced his own musical career (David Bowie pictured in 1973)
‘I met Bowie when I was 19 and he came into a nightclub that I was working in to try and find people for his ”Ashes to Ashes” video,’ he said. ‘I didn’t make the grade. I didn’t cut it that night. But the next night, I was at another club and I met him and he said to me ”you look like my friend Klaus Nomi” and of course at that time I thought I was the most original person on the planet. I was furious!’
‘Then I realized who Klaus Nomi was and I was like ‘Oh my God what an honor,’ said Boy George, referencing the 1970s East Village artist who performed with Bowie.
‘When I got famous, I saw him once in Australia in the first class lounge and I was just freshly famous. And I was like ”’Am I allowed to go talk to Bowie? And on what level do I talk to him.” Because I used to sit outside his house when I was 10.’
Boy George, who wore a bright blue bowler hat with a black suit, said he would sit outside Bowie’s house with many fans.
‘If he came out, simply to see what shoes he might be wearing,’ said Boy George, who wrote a tribute to Bowie after his death in 2016 at age 69.
‘Did you ever see him?’ Jimmy asked.
‘No, but there was this one time when Angie Bowie opened a window and told us all to f-off,’ Boy George said. ‘We were kind of thrilled even though she wasn’t being friendly.’
The artwork collection will go on sale from 8am on 25th October 2024.
