Popular children’s cartoon Bluey has become the second most streamed show in the United States.

Data recently released by Neilsen revealed that in 2023 viewing of the show on Disney+ had doubled from the previous year.

The animated show about a family of blue heelers living in Brisbane was the second most streamed show in the US, garnering 43.9 billion viewing minutes and coming just behind the legal drama Suits.

Bluey achieved the incredible success in a year overshadowed by the writers’ strike in Hollywood.

The strike had minimal impact on animated series like Bluey and Cocomelon because the production of the 2023 seasons of these shows had been completed long before them.

Bluey managed to outperform Cocomelon, the reigning children’s program in 2021 and 2022, by doubling its viewership in 2023.

Nielsen also documented a 21% surge in the overall streaming content consumption by Americans, reaching an impressive 21 million years’ worth in the past year.

Bluey, arguably Australia’s most popular children’s TV show, follows the adventures of a loveable, inexhaustible six-year-old Blue Heeler dog along with her family, which includes her mum, dad and younger sister and her friends.

The animated series won the Kids: Preschool Award at the 2019 International Emmys.

The cartoon has become wildly popular stateside after premiering on the Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney+ in September 2019.

In 2020, The New York Times described the show as ‘the biggest Australian export since The Wiggles’ – the country’s most famous children’s band.

The show is the result of a partnership between the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Children’s and BBC Studios Kids & Family, led by the creative direction of Joe Brumm.

The cartoon stays true to its Aussie roots and is packed with ‘g’day’ greetings and Aussie phrases like ‘show us your thongs, muffin!’
