Strictly Come Dancing’s Christmas Special beat EastEnders in the rankings for most watched programme on Christmas Day, but both lost to King Charles’ Christmas speech.

It comes as the BBC swept the board with nine of the top 10 shows – with ITV coming in at ninth place with The 1% Club.

This came as a shock as it was hoped that EastEnders’ shock twist would land it the top spot.

With 7.48m viewers at its peak, the King’s speech was well in the lead for the most-watched programme.

Strictly had 5.29 million people viewing, and third place was Doctor Who with 4.73 million.

In at number four with 4.43 million was Ghosts, a sitcom following a group of ghosts from different historical periods haunting a country house and its inhabitants.

EastEnders’ Christmas episode was full of red herrings and revelations that had EastEnders fans hailing it as legendary.

The Six united at the pub as they confronted Nish Panesar at the Queen Vic.

After he tried to drag wife Suki outside by her hair, the women tried to yank him off her before Denise smashed a bottle over his head.

As he lay bleeding on the floor, they all looked on in shock as Sharon knelt down and felt his pulse and confirmed that he was dead.

But, Suki later realised he was alive. Her relief was short-lived when she reunited with the Six and saw someone else dead.
