Sunrise star Katie Brown experienced an awkward moment on Wednesday which left the popular reporter red-faced.
The 32-year-old journalist was interviewing students during a live cross at a school in Sydney’s west about their HSC results when she mistook a teacher for a pupil.
Katie was moving through a large group of students who were enjoying a post-HSC celebration when the snafu occurred.
She had just finished talking to a student at St John Paul II Catholic College in Schofields when she tapped the shoulder of a female nearby.
‘Who have we got here,’ Katie asked.
After the teacher identified herself as Mrs. Canning, Katie cheekily asked her about her HSC results.

However, the teacher refused to play along and switched focus to highlight her student’s achievements.
‘I’m really proud of them. They did really well and worked really hard,’ she said.
Katie quickly recovered and told the youthful teacher: ‘You are also aging very well, I mistook you for a student.’
It’s not the first time that Kate’s natural style has led to a cringey moment at Brekkie Central.
Back in April, Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington were left speechless during a weather cross from O’Brien Icehouse when Katie rattled off several ice hockey-related puns.
Katie was joined by Melbourne Ice team coach Kerry Goulet during the segment for a lighthearted chat before reading the weather forecast.
But things went downhill when Katie began dropping several ‘puck’ puns.
‘I can hear a lot of pucking around here… Am I gonna get pucked up?’ she joked.
The cameras then cut back to hosts Barr, 56, and Shirvington, 45, who both looked unamused.
‘That’s too much,’ Shrivo said softly while shaking his head, while Barr tried to brush off the puns with a nervous laugh.
But the jokes continued, with Goulet telling Katie she’d be ‘pucked’ if she stood in as a goal keeper.
‘Line of the day. Let’s not get carried away, Katie,’ Shirvo said.
‘Exactly!’ Barr agreed.

Katie rose to popularity when she filled in for regular weather reporter Sam Mac back in 2022.
In 2023, she scored a high-profile gig as a ‘roving reporter’ for the top-rating breakfast show and features regularly in humorous and light-hearted segments
In November that year reports claimed Katie is set to take over as sports presenter on the breakfast show in 2025.
The journalist expected to push out breakfast show veteran Mark Beretta who has worked with the Channel Seven program on and off since 2000.
According to an insider, Katie is being mentored to transition into the sports broadcaster’s role after his new two-year contract is up, reported Woman’s Day.
‘Katie is just a country kid who appeals to all audiences for her no-nonsense style,’ they told the publication on Monday.
They went on to say ‘a few people behind the scenes have quietly voiced that Mark’s flashy lifestyle might not always resonate with viewers’.
‘The irony in all of this is that Beretta is one of Katie’s biggest supporters and has almost been a mentor to her,’ they added.
At the time of the reports, Mark had only just signed a new contract to stay on at Sunrise for another two years, with some raising their brows over the short length of the deal.
