Australian Police Poke Fun at Margot Robbie’s Oscar Snub, Claim to be “Investigating” Her Omission from Nominations List

An Australian police authority has played Margot Robbie’s surprise Oscars snub for laughs in a recent social media post.

The actress, who was born and raised in Queensland, failed to make the Best Actress category for this year’s 96th annual Academy Awards, to be held in Los Angeles on March 10.

Robbie’s omission has prompted a wave of support after many expected her starring role in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie – currently the highest grossing film of all time – to be acknowledged by the Academy board.

Victoria Police in her native Australia have since jumped on the bandwagon by sharing their own post, albeit with tongue firmly in cheek, alongside a collage of photos featuring Robbie, 33, throughout her career.

The local authority used the actress – whose first significant role came on Aussie soap Neighbors – as a handy reminder for Victoria residents to report ‘non-urgent crime.’

Captioning the post, they wrote: ‘POLICE INVESTIGATE AS MARGOT ROBBIED: Police are investigating after a former resident of Ramsay Street was allegedly robbed of an Oscar nomination for best actress.

‘We’d like to take this opportunity to remind all current residents of Ramsay Street and the rest of Victoria, to consider reporting any non-urgent crime, such as theft, via our online reporting tool.’

The post comes after Robbie’s Barbie co-star Ryan Gosling joined a chorus of disapproving supporters following her omission.

Gosling, 43, released a statement on Tuesday expressing his disappointment after Robbie and director Gerwig were snubbed by the Oscars.

The American star, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Ken in the film, claimed the movie would not exist without them.

‘There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.’

‘No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.’

‘Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees,’ he declared.

A source told DailyMail.com Ryan ‘believes that his role was so well received thanks to the work that [Margot and Greta] did, making his performance Oscar-worthy in the first place.’

‘He is ecstatic that he was honored but it is bittersweet that his enjoyment can’t be shared with Greta and Margot in the next few months because they were snubbed.’

The source added the father-of-two will perform I’m Just Ken during the ceremony and ‘may incorporate his feelings on Margot and Greta not getting nominated.’

Culture columnist Mary McNamara has joined the clamor of voices decrying the snubbing of Gerwig and Robbie from the 2024 shortlist, joking in her article that Academy voters themselves should be pushed out a window.

The list was released on Tuesday, and the two notable omissions prompted a flood of ire from Hollywood stars including Bet Midler, Sharon Stone and Brooklyn Decker.

Adding insult to injury was the nomination of Robbie’s male co-star Gosling. Another Barbie star, America Ferrera was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

McNamara said the nominations – and lack of – showed how voters were out of step with the feminist messaging in the film.

‘How did voters justify giving “Barbie,” with its very clear message that women have to dance backward in heels to get half the validation their male peers get, a best picture nom while ignoring the two women who made that picture possible?’ McNamara wrote.

The critic refers to three films which did receive glowing nominations – Poor Things, which features sex work, Killer’s of the Flower Moon, about serial slaughter, and Anatomy of A Fall about a woman accused of her husband’s murder.

‘If only Barbie had done a little time as a sex worker,’ McNamara mused. ‘Or barely survived becoming the next victim in a mass murder plot. Or stood accused of shoving Ken out of the Dream House’s top window.

‘Certainly millions of “Barbie” fans are currently wishing they could push someone — perhaps a member or two of the film academy — out of a very high window.’
