Aston Merrygold’s Surprise Career Move

JLS star Aston Merrygold has made a surprising new career move by starring in the latest Pixar film Elio.

The singer-turned-presenter, 37, made his voice-acting debut in the UK version of the animated film, aptly playing a character called Aston.

Playing alongside Hollywood royalty, Zoe Saldaña, 46, Aston’s character works at Montez Air Force Base, where there are rumours of alien life.

Like Aston, the film was a first for Zoe, who made her Pixar debut voicing Olga Solis – whose nephew is abducted by aliens – in the animated sci-fi comedy, which hits cinemas on June 20.

Aston said: ‘I’m so excited and beyond honoured to join the voice cast for the all-new original film from the iconic Animation Studio.

‘I mean who isn’s a Pixar fan? It means everything to me that my kids will be able to hear their Dad’s voice on the big screen!’

Aston was all smiles at the UK Gala screening at the Vue West End on Sunday, where he dressed in a causal but smart light blue suit.

He was joined by his wife Sarah and children Grayson, seven, Macaulay, four and Riley, one.

Aston was not the only big name at the event and was joined by presenter Jameela Jamil, 39, who has a supporting role, and American actor Brad Garrett, 65, who stars as the film’s antagonist, an alien warlord.

Like Aston, they had made an effort for the event, with Jameela also opting to wear blue, namely a pencil dress paired with white heels, and Brad similarly opted for a casual yet smart blue suit.

Aston’s appearance at the UK screening with his family came hot on the heels of that of Zoe Saldaña, who brought all three of her sons to the world premiere of Elio at El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood last Tuesday.

Zoe (born Zoë Yadira Saldaña Nazario) was dressed conservatively in a rust-colored turtleneck blouse tucked into a mustard-colored pencil skirt and brown pointy-toed pumps.

‘I wanted to be able to be a part of great stories out there that my children can relate to from an early stage,’ Saldaña explained of her motivation.

The Oscar winner – turning 47 this week – dressed her 10-year-old twin sons Cy Aridio & Bowie Ezio and eight-year-old son Zen Anton Hilario .

Zoe revealed her children specifically requested that the family spend this summer not far from their $17.5M five-bedroom Montecito mansion affectionately called ‘Casa De Buena Vista’ when they’re not enjoying ‘a lot of camp.’

‘Usually our summers are always spent traveling and traveling around work and traveling in general.

This summer, they were very adamant about staying home,’ Saldaña told ET on the blue carpet.

‘And now they’re getting older and they’re not just little briefcases that you can take around with you.

They have their own opinions they make their own decisions and they are very much about, “This is what we want. We want soccer. We want music. We want playdates, but we want to be home.” So we’re going to do that.’
