Ashley Tisdale auditioned for the movie Mean Girls when she was just 18 years old in 2003 and, even though she didn’t get cast, she reportedly left a lasting mark on the 2004 teen comedy penned by Tina Fey.
The 38-year-old High School Musical alum claimed she was up for the role of dimwitted Plastics member Karen Smith, which eventually went to Amanda Seyfried.
‘I just remember screen testing, and it was me and Blake Lively and someone else. But yeah, I screen tested, that was like eons ago, obviously,’ Ashley recalled on Tuesday’s Watch What Happens Live.
‘I just remember I adlibbed, because I always like at an audition to steal the scene, and I adlibbed one line, and they put in the movie. And I was like, “Are you kidding me?!” I should’ve gotten a writer’s credit. I’m kidding, yes, but I was like, “Dang!”‘
When host Andy Cohen asked if she could remember the line she adlibbed, Tisdale scoffed: ‘Oh my gosh, no, Andy! That was like literally when I was 16 years old. I just remember that, like, in my brain that that happened.’

However, casting director Marci Liroff previously told EW on January 9 that Ashley, Vanessa Hudgens, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead actually auditioned for rich Jewish girl Gretchen Wieners ‘but still weren’t quite right.’
‘We had a difficult time casting Gretchen Weiners. I kept reading young actresses for the role, Ashley Tisdale auditioned for that part but didn’t come down to the finals,’ Liroff explained to Cosmopolitan UK back in 2019.
‘There was a certain type of desperation for Gretchen, that you really felt for her. The original book was Queen Bees and Wannabes and she so wanted to be a mean girl and be part of the crowd yet kept getting put down. Finally Lacey [Chabert] came in and just got it on the very first take.’
Mark Waters’ critically-acclaimed big-screen adaptation of Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabes went on to amass $130.1M at the global box office.
The Daytime Emmy nominee also revealed she’s known two-time Grammy winner Ariana Grande ‘since she was 10’ because they had the same vocal coach, Eric Vetro.
‘Oh, everybody did. Yeah, yeah,’ Ashley said of the 30-year-old pop star’s incredible pipes.
‘She would come in – whether we were like at some like party that Eric’s friends were [hosting] – but she would come in and start singing and you’re just, like, blown away. She’s always been like that. She’s amazing.’
Tisdale also gushed about her former leading man Austin Butler from Michael Lembeck’s HSM spin-off Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, which was released in 2011.
